Chris Roberts, creator of Wing Commander, Freespace, etc., has a new project!

KhalathwyrKhalathwyr Member UncommonPosts: 3,133

It's called Star Citizen. If you've ever played his games Wing Commander, Freespace and/or Freelancer then you have a idea of what Star Citizen is going to be. Chris is meshing all three gameworld/play together to create one big space sim universe. There is a video up on their webspace (which is being hammered with a ton of interest such that we (the interested) shut it down on it's launch day) which gives more details along with a ton of in game pics.

The game will be funded via crowdsourcing (though not via Kickstarter) and you can donate in a KS type style on the main website (whic I will put below).

If you love PC gaming and you love space simulators this will be a game you won't want to miss!

Compared with Wing Commander and Freespace - this one will have cash shop.    Deal breaker for me.  There is just simply too much games with on-going payments. It is like everyone and it's dog want to earn continous stream of money on every single game type.    This one even want me to fund it. Hilarious.

What's next cash shop in Windows Saper or Solitare?

Where did you see that it will have a cash shop? I missed that if true. Either way I don't care because it will have the type of gameplay I have missed over the years.

On page you provided.   Of course you're free to do whatever you want.  I am just expressing my opinion.

Tbh, that webpage is really a mess to navigate. Where's the info on cash shop? Curious is all. Idk, F2P in some form is becoming an essential part of providing digital services. There is real problems with it already being in turkey form, but F2P (ie ignoring the misnomer) is probably going to be a part of  a lot of "online-connected" games henceforth?

It's not your typical cash shop. In Star Citizen the cs will sell in game currency only not items. All purchaces of items will be in game with in game currency so while not perfect it won't give the cash shop junkies access to anything you can't get by just playing the game. Because the game will be able to be played Single Player, Private Server Multiplayer or Public Server Multiplayer(MMO) the regular P2P option just won't work. You would have a lot of people paying a monthly sub to play single player which wouldn't be fair at all.

The only thing that worries me about it is the effect it will have on the in game economies but if everything is NPC sold that shouldn't be an issue and no type of crafting system has been announced or even asked for by the community. This game is being designed with the hardcpore PC space sim fan in mind not MMOers so you have to take that into account. This won't be your typical MMO as it's not really being designed to be a MMO at its core. It's a Space Sim you can play with lots of friends. Your typical MMO CS predudices really don't apply here as this isn't really a MMO at it's core. The CS is there so Roberts can still maintain a team after launch to bring new content to the game and to cover the costs of the public servers.

I agree that most people would not pay sub for it.   If it is small scale mmo / multiplayer then solution is like in many FPS games or like it was in NWN 1.   Sell servers or / and give people possibility to make servers.  Imporvvement to game sell in expansion packs. Problem solved.   Of course that propably mean smaller revenue for developer.

Anyway selling currency is just as bad as cash shop.  No idea why you think it will be better in multiplayer game than in mmo?  Cash shop is as bad in multiplayer games (like f2p Call of Duty clones) like in mmorpg's.  Okay maybe FPS shooters are not big on immersion so that problem not exist.  Star commander seem like and Freespace deffo was immersive game so immersion break also does apply.

I am done here, will not play.

Your loss man. Do what you feel is right though. This type of CS in this type of game is merely a shortcut not an advantage. To each his own though. image

Yeah, I'd have to agree that if the only thing sold in the CS is "credits", the in gam currency, then that isn't an immersion break in my view. A large part of this game will be exploring and commerce. Buying credits would be no more unrealistic or immersion breaking than people in this world right now exchanging US dollars for Euros so that they couldpurchase more things in a market that favors Euros. Again, my opinion.
