So with more info coming out about Defiance, which has got me very interested now, Ive grown more curious about Rift as well and have been thinking of maybe checking it out to see what else Trion has done, but I dont know much about it. Problem is, theres a lot of other games Im looking forward to right now, some of them coming out within the next 1-3 months, like Darkfall Unholy Wars, so not sure if getting into a new game for me would be worth my time unless it has something really great to offer.
Yes I realize Storm Legion is also coming out, and if Rift is enjoyable enough I may get it, but if the game itself doesnt do it for me, Im likely not going to waste my money.
So anyway. What are some of the great things about Rift that you fans of it really enjoy and/or find unique about the game? What keeps you playing? What is the PvP like, not just the basic mechanics / objectives, but is it actually fun and abig part of the game?
Also, what about some of the downsides of the game? Ive heard its a very smooth game with very few bugs / technical issues, etc. Is that still true? Are there things that you really dislike about the game, even though you still like it for the good things?
Just to give a little more info:
- I typically prefer a good sandbox game that gives you lots of freedom, but Ive also enjoyed a lot of themepark games (GW2, WAR, old WoW, DDO, LOTRO, etc)
- Im mainly a PvPer. I enjoy good stories and all, but my focus in MMOs isnt for the story or killing mindless NPCs, Im in them more for the PvP & competition with other players
- Im big on character customization. Not so much looks as actually creating a wide variety of unique builds and the freedom to change them around and ry new things out. I dont necessarily need the customization of DDO, but I also dont like games where there is basically just 1 or 2 viable cookie cutter builds for a class
- I tend to get bored pretty easily. I dont like extensive grinds with very little purpose and tend to get bored with those types of games very quickly
- Im also an altaholic and enjoy gaes that offer comepletely different playstyles between different classes, as well as being able to experience brand new things on different characters rather than running the same treadmill over and over again on each character

Really! i don't think so, i would say he RIFT has alot of things he mentions. Not to mention a dev team that puts all other MMO dev teams to shame.
Information and reactions from actual players, especially people still playing it today, is usually a lot more telling than just looking up stuff for me. A lot of games look good based on info, but the reaction and the way it comes together in the game might be very bad, so just looking for some info on what people enjoy or dislike in the game, etc.
No I dont mind paying a sub. Just cancelled 5 or 6 yesterday from games I no longer play ><

Yeah the dev team is what got me interested. I was wrapped up in other games before, so never really paid a lot of attention to Rift. But Ive hear good things about the devs, and after seeing what theyre doing with Defiance I kind of wanted to see what some of their other work was like.
Like the post above you mentions, wait for SL and you will find many new people to play the game with plus many things are being revamped.
Witht he PvP, is it just open world pvp for the sake of PvP? Or do they have some form of BGs/ Scenarios, or any objective based / RvRish PvP? Also, in any of these things, is it dealing with people of all levels or do they have any form of tiers / brackets (like T1-T4 based on levels in WAR).
And are there confirmed changes / additions to these things for SL?
Yes really! Reading his post many of his fears and things he is concerned about are Rift. I believe he is better off waiting for Storm Legion and saving his money. Rift pvp is horrible and its an endless grind. These will bore him and speak directly to his fears and what he is trying to avoid.
To be fair, most of the stuff you ask for can already be found on official rift forums, espcially newcomers area. Anyway, I'll give this a try. Rift is the mmo that pumps out the most content on a regular basis, compared to MMO X. It is a hybrid between theme and sandbox, some sand elements are the emphasis on open world. There are many types of rifts and zone invasions that takes place in open world that provide currencies that can be used for endgame, also PvP Rift. Theres also no zoning when you're mounting from zone to zone, making it feel like the world is connected (not like gw2's lobby game, Haters gunna Hate!) It is really important that you have an open mind when playing Rift as theres many possibilities. Now they have had some demise in player amounts due to people these days being spoiled and MMO jumping (myself included).. but then many realize that swtor tera tsw whatever wasnt that good afterall, they tend to be too linear at endgame with little options for player freedom. Rift today is the closest hybrid making this possible, even more so in Storm Legion.
When that is said, the devs really should improve their feedback on PvP content. There are a lot of active community members with bright ideas, but the devs tend to remain silent on this aspect - it feels as if they are a little unsure how to directly approach PvP in a more either-less-grindy-or-atleast-add-some-more-meaning. There's warfronts, theres conquest, PvP rifts, open world pvp, duels, thats good - but it's lacking true progression or meaning (when they launched Rift they didnt have a pvp dev). So far to get the best pvp gear your need to grind your way up (yes grind is subjective, but if u play daily it becomes a grind because the amounts needed are big), and with each gear update this grind would increase, making it much harder for new players to achieve the gear. My other example of meaningfulness is that you can easily come above this grind by joining conquest (a much more simple version of WvW 3 faction pvp). And on top of this theres no ranks or sense of competitiveness. I am not talking about arenas as theres just to many soul combos (and look at WoWs unbalance every season). For instance they coulda added ranked warfronts etc (there are leaderboards but very unaccurate and have little sense of prestige). But despite it's fractions I still play this game, it has much more to offer than other MMOs today, and the game has changed in many ways sinse release and the devs willingness to try out crazy new ideas - making it worth sticking with. Do some research beforehand and find a somewhat nice populated pvp server, although the playerbase will grow overall once expansion hits - it has already begun growing.
Fixed that for ya. Nobody reads walls.

wow , guild wars 2 pvp is also endless grind . so i dont know what point you are trying to make?
It is not a hybrid it's a themepark mmo, stop making it out to be something it's not.
