So far this has been the only game to sattisfy my high fantasy roleplaying needs...
Maybe my fantasy universe is based a bit to much based on my pen and paper experiences, but i have allways been an avid forgotten realms fan, both the gameparts as the literature parts. And no other game ever came close to those campaigns, but DDO.
Compared to other games character development in this game has so much freedom both for min/maxers as roleplayers. If you can think of a character you can probably build it in this game.
All other MMO settings fall short compared to Dungeons and Dragons... (Tough some of them are better games)
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

I have to admit this game is shockingly good. And unlike most MMO's coming out these days it gets better and deeper as you play, the depth in character class building is amazing, It almost plays out like a sandbox style game with all the weird things they have built in. And the level of interaction in the game world is better then some single player games and definitely more world interaction then any MMO out there beside a pure sandbox like WURM.
I think the complexity (depth) is what keeps people away. There is so much to learn and you mostly have to do it on your own. Also there are limits to your resources so you have to plan, something most MMO's abandon years ago and replaced with console style full throttle action combat.
Not to say combat is slow paced on the contrary it is very fast paced and fluid, very dymanic, also you can move while casting and bowing, archery and casting has a targeting reticle with the camara locked behind you so it plays like a FPS (melee too in a sense), something games are just now claiming to have reinvented. DDO does it better then Vindictus, TERA, Dragons Nest and C9 in my opinion.
I loved the dungeons personally, puzzles, mazes, traps it was great! nothing like the 5 minute dungeons every other game has these days.
I personally hope the other games coming out with the D&D universes will have just as strong a dungeon system.
Even tho the combat looked kinda meh with the age of the game it still was one of the most fun experiences I've had.
