Originally posted by Galadourn I blame it on the official news releases by ZOS, which pointed to a more WoW-like experience. Then, after the outcry before and during the E3 presentation, they went silent and reworked on all those things people were whining about. How successful this tweaking will be remains to be seen, or if they've tried to use a band-aid to cure a deep wound.
Pretty much this. Can't blame folks for reacting to what the Dev's ACTUALY SAID thier design intents were, at the time they said them.
Just look at this quote from the reviewer from todays article....
"....the build we played is midway between the old tab-target system and the new free-form targeting..."
Meaning they started out with a different design which was much closer to the traditional WoW/TOR design and much further away from the traditional TES design and THEN decided to change it.
Maybe they looked at what happaned to TOR and decided they didn't want to follow along that path? Maybe they took fan backlash to heart?
Anyway points awarded for actualy being responsive to feedback in thier design. Points deducted for not thinking through the initial design very well in the first place.
Ultimately I'm reserving judgment until just before release and this thing gets into the hands of actual players. That's where the rubber meets the road and we see how it's really shaped up. I'm not enthused by some of the design decisions they've made but it is sounding better then it was before. Right now TESO has a big question mark on it for me...but at least it's gone from a definite "no buy" to a let's see for me. YMMV.
Originally posted by MindTrigger Until I see evidence that they are planning more hybrid features, this still just looks like a fly-by-night themepark that people will be bored with inside of 30 days. I hope I'm wrong.
My guess right now is that you are probably right. The real difference right now is this game, unlike TOR, may be actualy be FUN enough to be worthwhile me picking up to play for 30 days before dropping sub. YMMV.
Originally posted by salenger Originally posted by EntinerintDON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE!I personally checked with several of the reviewers: combat is NOT real-time. It is much akin to GW2, not quite like TERA (which is barely real-time). There is soft-targetting. You do NOT aim attacks. You CANNOT swing your weapons freely. You do NOT aim spells, swings or bows. You DO have to be facing your target, and put your cursor over the target, but then, voila, auto-attack begins as long as you're in range. It is a hybrid system, which is better than nothing, but they need to take it further, all the way: Mortal, Darkfall, TES-style before it is fully there. They did a good thing by listening to the complaints and improving things.Note that anyone who was there AND was also at the E3 presentation says a LOT has changed. They are also no longer saying this stuff is impossible. So there's hope that they may get to proper real-time direct-action combat system, but they may now just rest on their laurels on this one.
The combat in this game failed the moment they decided to use the Hero engine.
omfg. Why exactly?

Well if they release a game with The Elder Scrolls title and strip it of most of the core elements that Elder Scrolls fans love, then it's probably pretty deserving.
I'm in a "wait and see" mode for this game, although I'm not expecting a whole lot. Hopefully that'll work in my favor because I love TES...
