I own the 1.0 client, does it need a patch or do I have to download a totally new one?

    But you won't have to pay for 2.0 if you brought 1.0.

    It's been pretty clearly stated multiple times.

    UW is a completely new game with no ties to the old client in any way. There will be a new client download released close to launch, and you will not be able to patch your current DF client to play the new game.

    So yes, it will be a totally different client as far as I understand.
