Hope for Rangers (hope...fully)

TheHavokTheHavok Member UncommonPosts: 2,423

So anybody who has played a ranger in TPVP or any SPvP for that matter knows that Rangers have been looking pretty grim, especially since the Shortbow nerf last month.  We had one very viable build in Tournies but Anet took it away.

Well, there is hope. Jon Peters provided a small Ranger Update teaser on the official forums.  In its first two days, this thread had over 30k views.  Now, 13 days later, it is at 54k views.  Check it out if you play a Ranger - you'll see a lot of good discussion about what needs to be fixed, what would help our class, ect.

In comparison, the Quick Update by Jonathan Sharp posted about a month ago is only at 34k views - and this is an update for ALL structured PVP.

Will this fix our pet pathing and animation issues?  Will this do some necessary trait rearranging?  Will this allow us to perform other roles besides range dps at a competitive level?  Will this fix some of our worthless skills? IDK

And before you say "Rangers are fine - I kill a bunch of people", well I have killed a bunch of people as well - I have won more 1v1s then I lost - I have achieved top score multiple times.  But - I still lose to people I outplay simply because their profession mechanics are stronger then mine.  I still get overlooked by other classes because they fulfill their role better then I do in TPVP, I still see less and less rangers and more thieves, guardians, and mesmers.

The best ranger I have seen play was Sockersot on Team Paradigm.  He was the first person i've seen to use the shortbow condition build effectively.  Sadly it looks like he quit GW2.  I think more and more players will follow suit if the Ranger's issues aren't addressed soon.

Here is a problem with GW2

You have classes that are good for PVE and classes that are good for PVP. There is such divide its not even funny.

    Take Mesmer for example:

PVE he is survivor - he is built for 1vs1. So he can kill even champion monsters alone. But 1 by 1 ... Put him against many opponents (and that is what GW2 PVE is) and let the patience game begins. Because it takes sooo long. And in ORR and other dynamic events. Be lucky to get credit for 1% of total kills.

PVP let just put it this way. In sPVP people see Mesmer , they dont fight , they run away.

Thief ... Lets not get started on thief in sPvP.  In PVE you rarely see one.

    ...

On other hand Ranger is perfect for PVE , but rarely good in PVP - I see ranger in PVP i just shrug. Not an easy pray , but certanly a pray.

Elementalist ... dont get me started. A great fun class. But certanly not working as intended in PVP.

Now you will often hear : "Elementalist can put out high damage if you are skilled player (or ranger)"

    Its true.

But for example , i am pretty crappy PVP player. Yet with mesmer i am doing ownage , i am laughing , and nobody can not even come close to killing me.

In same time Elementalist has to sweat , press gazzilion keys , combos - just to get one simple kill.

And thief ! Just press 2 ... haha

    :

    Noob elementalist *

    Skilled Elementalist ***

    Noob Thief ***

    Skilled Thief ******

    ---

I am very disapointed in Anet class design. In GW1 they had multiclassing and you could switch the skills - so they couldnt screw it. Now that you are locked in same set of skills - the mistakes are glaring.

The other thing about thieves in pvp, at least in WvWvW, is how effortlessly they 'exploit' the already craptactular culling/rendering problem. They're supposed to be about to nerf perma-stealth. Or at least try to.

I know that when I come up against a thief in WvWvW with my guardian, he's probably not going to kill me but I can do FUCK ALL to him. THE ONLY time a thief has no control about when he dies is in the zerg. And that's where you see the skilled ones. They hover at the edge, zip in and take down a wounded enemy and run for the hills. They're pretty impossible to catch in general.

They're pretty necessary in WvWvW for portal bombing. Very few people have figured out how to counter it, though there is a counter.

the thing i'm waiting on is, what happened to separating pve and pvp skill behavior coding? that was one of the promises, I absolutely refuse to be stuck in the position I was in in WoW with Ghostcrawler post WoTLK and Cata launches where for about 8 weeks every week they had a patch and every week i had to redo my build as a hunter, redo my entire concept of pets to choose from for pve, and redo my shot rotation. Now while GW2 doesn't have shot rotations and they do have builds for pve for easy burst damage, they definitely need to get a hold on this because that is not what I'm dealing with in a game B2P or not.

I've read they mentioned something about doing the coding differently for pve and pvp in their forums when someone asked that very question. ;)

That being said, all this nonsense about nerfing classes, every class has their weaknesses in pvp and people need to stop whining all the time about PVP(specifically talking about the people who yell nerf at the drop of a hat). It's old, about 12 years too old to be specific.

The problem is not just the classes but horrible design of mob 'tagging' in ORR. Most of the classes like War, Guard etc just spam one aoe skill in events over and over again. They should just remove this 'who aoe the most gets the most contribution and loot'.

I am pretty sure they can come up with something better.

the current meta excludes too many people unfortunately. GW2's pvp is very 2-dimensional and, well, boring.  this is coming from a big tourney player. the nov 15 patch will make or break the near future of GW2's s/tpvp.

Forget it. Its not going to happen.

They are too too careful with any change. And honestly I think they would make some kind of test server to test any major change.

What we are going to see is perhaps some timer changes , adjustments .. etc (mostly nerfs as always)

Nothing major like for example new skills.

In fact their skills building team is so lslow that some tooltips are still wrong , even month + from release.

Again. Skilled player can be good with any class.

But when crappy player can be good with special class - than skilled player can be godly with that certain class , while that other skilled player will be only good.

In sPVP even bad player can pwn with thief.

But skilled PVPer , I seen thief singlehandedly killing whole zerg in WvW. I am talking 1 vs 20

I beat theifs all the time on my ranger.

We are on of the best equipped classes to real with them with traps and the right pets (not your pve bear)
  • ShakyMoShakyMo Member CommonPosts: 7,207
    Tips for good ranger builds.
Condition based - short box with axe / dagger!, buff your traps, use pets with condition fields.
Buff heal based - axe / warhorn with either bow, use moas keep em passive, get the pet rez player skill, use the healing spirit.
Tanky - great sword with sword and horn, take both swords off auto attack, pig type pets work best, have a fire or frost trap so you (and your pig pet) can use the field to get armour buff, take second pet with a field for when trap off cooldown, e.g. fire salamander, murrolow, ice wolf. Don't forget to open with pig pets "steal" for stealth or plasma power boost.

    For all builds.

Always use healing well, its by far the best healing skill, especially with fast weapon like shortbow. Amazing how many rangers don't use it.

Pretty much always use frost trap

Pets with cc, that lay fields you can exploit or with heals or buffs are best. Not your pve tank pet.

Don't kite everyone, sure you want to kite theifs and warriors, but elementalist and engineers you want to get right in their face, other class depends on what weapons they use.

you are probably referring to the visual culling bug, along with backstab, and Cloak and Dagger spammage. theyre already aware of this. obviously, you havent done any tpvp. even the most gosu thieves are well balanced against a good team. for example, two tried to burst me down with quickness and backstabs as i held a point on Khylo. i crushed them with my greatsword and retaliation. this was a high level tpvp game, 3rd round.

yes there are bugs, and yes backstab thieves have too low of skillcap and it's TOO easy to farm glory in spvp. they already stated that theyre seriously looking into adjusting thief burst damage (this is post backstab signet nerf).

i have a feeling that the game's balance will be in a decent spot as of Nov. 15th. we will see. they will also need rankings and obs mode for esports though.

It was similar in GW1, but in GW2 the gap between profs. is much smaller, so I'm pleased. And I'm sure they balance constantly. I suggest u go to other game where ballance is better...ah wait there isnt such?!

    Not at all.

It was a glass cannon thief buffed by his friends they all wait in ambush. In right moment he Stealths into middle of zerg , steals warriors wirlwind and literally drops half of the zerg dead. Than stealths again and repeats process. It happens in no more than 6-7 seconds. And when zerg realise what is happening they manage to kill him. But by then he reduced the whole zerg to maybe 20% of what it was. And his buddies jump in and finish the job.
