How is this different from an expansion?

kadepsysonkadepsyson Member UncommonPosts: 1,919

Plenty of games change their title, when launching an expansion.

Plenty of games add or alter classes and class systems, with an expansion.

Plenty of games include bug fixes and UI updates, with an expansion.

Plenty of games add areas, sounds, and update graphics, with an expansion.

So what sets this apart from an expansion to the original title?  Is it just because they are getting rid of the massive amount of time dedicated players spent playing it, by deleting their characters?

It is a bit silly to have it on the hype meter for a game in development when the game has been released for quite a while.  Unless having it there is a jab by calling it a game in development still, which I could understand and laugh at such a joke.

Care to name one game that did a total rebuild of the entire skill and character system in an expansion?

Which is exactly why it would be stupid to call it an expansion - it's a new game.

If in 1982 we played with the current mentality, we would have burned down all the pac man games since the red ghost was clearly OP. Instead we just got better at the game.

So nothing carried over?  So it was an entirely different game? image

It's not so much an expansion as much as it a relaunching of the game. It's actually a pretty clever way to do a server wipe that the game sorely needed. To many people had exploited the game previously, but there was no way to punish them withouth affecting everyone, so they make what is essentially an expansion and relaunch the game fresh.

It was changes made to an existing game, features altered and added.  Sony didn't call SWG a new game, perhaps they weren't so deluded/unethical at the time.  In any event, now we have this expansion on the horizon, with devs selling it as a new game.

No, of course not.  There were vast amounts of content and gameplay mechanics that carried over.  After all, altering or adding a feature doesn't mean you just made a new game.  I'd hate to think how many different games there would be every time a developer added a class, or fixed a bug.  Though the developer in question here does not seem to understand that.

i dont see the big deal in whatever they call it,  there not making you buy a new copy if you already have one, so let them market it how they want,  if you play the game welcome the marketing and the new players it hopefully brings.

if your not playing it, then what does it matter to you

They arent selling it to us who paid for the original. image It was originally meant to be an expansion, but the changes were so drastic they deemed it easier to rebuild from the ground up.

I wouldnt call it an expansion, it's a new game. If things turn out to be on par with the hype, this game will be what the first Darkfall should have been. Game systems and contents have been improved and new feats added. This game is big because there are no other real titles that can match this on the MMORPG market, and there are a lot of players who craves this kind of gameplay.

    I see your point.

For example, if darkfall were a car, everyone would want it because there would literally be no other automobiles for sale.  It'd be the best, clearly, and also the worst, by default.

    Well at least you're honest.

So for sake of argument we'll call it an expansion.  Doesn't every other game on the planet require you take the the original client to enjoy a free expansion?

Hmm, you could be right.  I wonder then if any single line of code that ever existed in the original Darkfall made it into this expansion?

Because code is changed between when a game exists, and its expansion, but some stays the same.  Thus, if any single amount of code is the same between the two games, by your definition, it is an expansion.

If we're going to use a car as an example we'll have to improvise to match my original post. With "players crave this kind of gameplay" I refer to the full loot open non instanced world PvP with territories. Those who are into this will have a great time, however, this playergroup may be a minority if you compare it to the MMORPG market and overall player interests. It'd be like buying the only car on market that has a big enough trunk for 10 bodies, but in return I'd would cost 3 times as much fuel to drive. Not that many people would buy such an expensive and strange thing, yet those very few murderers out there or people with the right few proffessions might find it handy.

If we're getting complex we should use vegetables as an example instead.

Yawn...Then why are you crying about them "selling" Unholy Wars as it is clearly a standalone product or would require you to purchase the original if its only an expansion as you state. image Frankly, I could care what you call it, but  you make me laugh. image

Did you know that a pumpkin is a fruit?

So darkfall is a vegetable, but the developers are keeping her on life support in the hopes that one day her customers will come back to her, and then she will awaken as a complete person.  To do this they first killed her.  This is to get rid of the bugs.  Then they harvested her organs as the basis for the next version.  Now they changed things around for her, and she is male, but still the same person at heart, because her heart was one of the things carried over, by a nurse.  And finally they added "Smith" to her name so that way people would think (s)he was a new person while really most of her was the same.

The real question is then, if the bugs come back, and the customers leave again, what will Doctor Aventurine do next?

I have looked at your post history, and you are pretty obsessed by a game you`re never going to play.

We are coming back because parts of Darkfall is simply unbelivable amazing. You don`t have to worry about us or AV, we`ll manage. The worst that can happen to us, is that we have to play the games you like. You should rejoice in that some players get their dream game, and hope you`ll get yours some day.

But keep posting, atleast DFUW get some hits on the forum

Why is GW2 a new game and not a WOW expansion?

    It has :

    - A changed title.

    - Reworked/alternative classes.

    - UI update.

    - New areas sounds and updated graphics.

I'm telling you it shouldn't be sold as a new game but as WOW  V1.2

See how valid your arguments are? Dat logic....

I would say this probably what makes it as a new game, but it doesn't really matter if you still consider it an expansion.
