Yeah, that's a side effect of the bro mentality that resulted from sports franchises and rockband games. It went from geek to mainstream really fast.
Do you have an alternative to the word "hyperbole?" The word is fine. Hearing people try and pronounce it is kind of funny though.
Exaggerate.
That word lacks the implied sarcasm or rhetoric that hyperbole conveys. It would be like using the word fruit when you are talking about a banana. Correct, but not accurate.
A few years ago you saw the word used next to never. Then, some sort of outbreak took place, and we now have everyone and their dogs spewing it up all over the place. The quest to be clever has reduced it's impact to squat. Similar to the case of "straw man argument". Instead of coming across as bright and original (which is obviously the intention), you just end up looking like a putz.
Overuse seems to be a problem with a lot of the examples in this thread. It's funny, much like the titles that make up this the genre, the gamers who play them are just as unoriginal and stagnant
"Mr. Rothstein, your people never will understand... the way it works out here. You're all just our guests. But you act like you're at home. Let me tell you something, partner. You ain't home. But that's where we're gonna send you if it harelips the governor." - Pat Webb

Hyperbole is the greatest term ever to be used in regards to mmo's - bar none; from the past, for now and for the future, and anyone who thinks differently is the type which will bring our entire society to destruction.
"Entitled." I don't know how or why this word has slithered into every single topic of discussion but it must self-immolate in the most excruciating and spectacular way possible. It doesn't help that it's broadly misused both here and elsewhere, applied to anyone who has a complaint, request, or desire. (Nevermind that innovation, discovery, freedom, and change of all kind most often results from wanting something beyond what one currently has). It's just as provocative and dismissive as "fanboi" and "hater", a way for cranky gamers to wave away the other side's points without actually engaging in a discussion. My grandparents' generation called my parents' generation selfish, my parents called my generation lazy and my generation calls my kids' generation entitled. Wonder what the next generalized putdown will be.

I agree that they do get used a bit more, but I would consider that a good thing. People probably didn't use words like hyperbole 10 years ago because they never really knew of them, much less their applications or meanings.
I don't see the problem being people using those words more, but that the same fallacious arguments are being used to defend a position as before. It's just that now the words to call those arguments out are more widely known, which is a good thing.
If you don't want someone throwing the word hyperbole around, then don't make hyperbolic statements. If you don't want "strawman" accusations made against you, then don't ignore or distort their position in an attempt to better frame your retort.

I'll defend that term. When playing WoW Alterac Valley or, pretty much any quest in GW2, I very much feel like I'm part of a mindless zerg simply swarming over the objective.
Hyperbole: Way too overused and usually incorrectly. It doesn't make you sound more intelligent. Nothing says, "I'm in my first year at community college and I just learned a new word" like the term hyperbole.

Ok, lets not rathole with a discussion about the intricacies in the use of the word hyperbole. You're trying to tell me that people on these forums can fully understand the nuances between exaggeration and hyperbole and therefore use the word properly. The very same people who post every day without the least bit of awareness of spelling, grammar, capitalization, and punctuation. Yeah, right.
As far as I'm concerned, the world hyperbole is everyone's favorite, "look, I can use big words too" expression. In most cases, the word exaggerate clearly communicates what the person thinks of any other poster's overstatement.
I hate the term,it's depressing for a number of reasons...It's an MMO,there is no end!
Amen, brother.
If you're looking for an "end", you must have gotten lost and wandered into the wrong genre. We have more than enough gaming genres that offer that type of gameplay.

Anyone notice that "exaggerate" is a longer word that "hyperbole" (and so by the vocabular-haters usual standard, 'brainier')?

After all, if one throws in a Latin phrase, it must mean their opinion is more intelligent or brilliant, right?

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR
This isn't MMO-exclusive, but I loathe "It is what it is". It's not philophical, it's frickin' vague and lazy. God, I hate that crap.
=D
You hear that a lot from Project managers..."we are where we are"....basicaly means "I fucked up and you pointing out where I fucked up and how long ago you told me I was going to fuck up won't change the fact the project is a mess. I still get paid and because i am the project manager can blame everyone else and then get a big pat on the back when 'I' fix the problem".

It's pretty simple really.
As for this thread, my vote is the term "causation does not imply correlation" or any such varient.

That kind of goes hand-in-hand with another poster who added 'pay2win' to the list. If there is no end game, then how can you possibly win? :-)
