I REALLY loved this game. The fact that I could take my time making decisions (turn based combat) and the longer-term strategic decisions combined with a great story won me over.
But I really don't want to play it a second time and was hoping some of the knowledgeable people around here have suggestions for games in a similar vein. Something that doesn't require the reflexes of a 10-year old jacked up on energy drinks but does have an engrossing story. Could be an MMO I guess, but I suspect not. I realize this is pretty open-ended, mostly because I'm not sure what I want except XCOM with a fresh story
Thanks in Advance,
DJ

Unfortunately, this style of game is rather rare. The only games that I would feel truly comfortable comparing to XCOM: Enemy Unknown are the previous XCOM games. But those suckers are old enough that the graphics and interface are a huge turn off for most people.
If you don't mind getting a little more RPG in your tactical shooter, either the Valkyria Chronicles or Fire Emblem series are excellent games with a similar setup. Someone I know also mentioned Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars, but I personally have no idea how close it is.
No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

I don't know if you can or how well you can run it on a modern machine but the old Fallout Tactics game might be right up your alley. It's like $3.50 on STEAM at the moment.
UFO Aftermath, UFO Aftershock, UFO Afterlight, UFO Extraterrestials, and of course the original UFO Enemy Unkown are very similar to XCOM Enemy Unknown.
You might also like Disagea games, Fire Emblem games or Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.
Jagged Alliance games are also similar to XCOM.
I don't think there are any similar MMOs. There are turn-based MMOs like Dofus, Wakfu, Atlantica Online, Wizard 101 and Pirate 101. In Atlantica Online and Pirate 101 you even control a whole team. But there are not the same kind of grand strategic decisions and the battles are way shorter and less exciting.
You might like Command & Conquer Tiberium Alliances MMO. Even if it's very different from XCOM, there are both grand strategic decisions and planning strategy for individual battles.
Wakfu is something you should try. It has amazing combat, and 14 different classes with great diversity in playstyle and complexity. A anime is also airing with the same title that really expands on the world, and fleshes out the story and characters so you better understand what is going on.
I don't understand why more people don't play Wakfu when it's such an amazing game. Although I'll admit that turn-based combat is a little niche.
Any of them for a very few bucks avaialble...
X-Com is available at Gamersgate.com
UFO, Jagged Alliance is available at GoG.com
While X-Com is turnbased UFO is pausable real time - i think UFO is way underrated.
Aside of that i cant really name a good game that is close to X-Com.
Jagged Alliance was as good as X-Com imho and is worth being played.

You should keep an eye on Mechwarrior Tactics. It's still in beta and I am not in it, but it may be worth your while to research it a little. It is supossed to be turn-based Battletech, similar to the tabletop game. I think it is mwtactics.com or just search for it and it should be apparent.
