Magic imo is the ability to bend or even sometimes break the rules of the (in mmorpg case) virtual world. That's why it's magic. Secondly it's magic because doing this is uncommon: If it became common, it would then simply become part of the world, like using magic for energy for heating the home etc etc...
That's where I think rpgs have to be careful with magic imo: It ends up becoming another form of artillery or something equivalent to the unmagical equivalent. Obviously all those flash effects are too good to not use whenever possible on screen... so it's ubiquitous magic in most mmorpgs: Not REAL magic.
