How Instance-Reliant?

As the title says, how reliant on running instances is AoC?  I know there are quite a few (or there were 3 or 4 years ago), and that instances/dungeons accounted for a fair bit of content.  I'm not into the whole raiding/running of instances thing, but I do enjoy PvP a fair bit...and DF:UW has me severely disappointed on multiple levels.

 

So tell me, please - if I give AoC another go, will I need to run instanced dungeons to be viable PvP-wise?
