Well i happen to play AO and i say its great
Well obviously the stuff like the stats/nanos etc can be a bit confusing but the thing that made ME throw away EQ and join AO was that i actually got Service.
I mean the first time i log in, I sit and look at the cool graphics (totally differant from everything ive seen bfore) and start to fiddle with the menus etc and read a bit in the manual etc...All of a sudden a person with a green name (ARK) says to me :
On behalf of AO i would like to welcome you to Rubi-Ka.......(or something like that)
Heck i was sold!...now yea sure i have a few chars that are fairly high lvl and its starting to become a bit boring...BUT Shadowlands is on its way and from what i hear its Totally differant to the normal AO...Caint wait to get my filthy hands on that expansion
And Omni-tek & clan do have differances...if u did not notice then you did not try to get ''in'' the game
AO rocks ..simple and true ..but thats my meaning

I play AO . I have played many of the MMoRPGs out and find AO to be the best one out at this time.
The original poster said bad graphics,he/she didnt spend much time looking around.AO has great graphics that will only be improved upon with shadowlands. As far as the UI goes,it gets easy after a little while, yes AO is more complex then EQ,DAoC etc. but personally I like games that you need to think about a little.
Someone said it was boring after lvl 50.Well all MMoRPGs are boring to a point so far, becuase of repatition. I find AO to be one of the more fun ones at the higher lvls and when you add in the ability to make progress solo as well as grouped and all the out door hunting areas ,teamed with the personal dungeons known as missions ,as well as the static dungeons they have been adding, AO has alot of things to do and is only past by EQ for content.
Add in the most friendly and helpfull on line comunity I have found in any game to date.Along with a customer service that is fast and curtious.
Top all this off with Shadowlands looking very interesting and I have decided to play AO over SWG for the time being. At least till EQ2 comes out.

Livelyc,
I don't know how you can say AO has "bad graphics" then talk about how EQ is better LOL! Especially if you only spent 1 hr playing AO. Did you even watch the intro demo showing you arriving at the spacestation? It also has a newbie tutorial showing how to use the game controls. After you put in the CD, don't hit anything. It should auto-load. And then the demo will play. Then on the character creation screen you get more instructions.
1 hour isn't even enough time to browse the different species, watch the intro demo, make a character, or explore the newbie area.
You say you're a long time EQ player, then what level is your highest character?
Don't mention AC2. I mean if you love it, hey, your cup of tea. But in this real world, AC2 is a complete failure.
DAoC is a decent game. All the characters you mention you have in other games are all low level. It seems to me you are extreemly impatient. Maybe MMORPG's are not for you. Maybe you'd like something different and more to your tast like a FPS such as Counter Strike, Unreal Tournament, Alien vs Preditor, Jedi Outcast.
I personally like AO because it is in a much different setting than EQ. AO is a Sci-Fi MMORPG. EQ, DAoC, AC, and even the failure AC2, are all Fantasy/Tolkien-themed MMORPGs.
Obviously you didnt give it much of a chance if you say you still couldnt figure out the interface. If you understood it then it would mean you accualy played it for more than an hour. The interface is MUCH better than most mmorpgs around. You can costomize it so well, and you have alot of control of your camera functions, wich alot of games lack. Simple things like name display options, costomizing your chat, and even the way you can zoom WAY out and see the entire area around you, or move your camera to look up.
And the gfx are great. Obviously you havent seen shadowlands in your trial of this game. If your saying they suck compared to something like ffxi or asherons call 2 then yes, but on an average mmorpg standard AO has some of the best gfx around.
I play this game simply because i find all other morpgs too basic and everyone seems to be a cookie cutter character. I mean, take DaoC for example, pretty much every Savage is the same as the other, only a few minor differences here and there. In AO, you can costomize your char very well, and there is almost no limitations as to how you can develop your charcter. You could make a freakin nano-mage enforcer that uses his damned fists as weapons if you wanted. (if you dont know what that is, its like taking the perfect "mage class" choosing the best tank class, and using one of the worst weapon options for it). anythings possible because of the skill system wich is much more advanced that other mmorpgs, and alloys you to make your character truely unique.
When playing a MMORPG i simply hate it when every class like you is almost exactly the same, and how most mmorpgs, for your equipment, you are restricted to a certain kind, and to get better weapons and armor you just go to the shop and get the next one down the list. BORING. Or ones wher you lvl up, then gotta run halfway across the middle of nowhere to some crappy town to a trainer bot, just to raise some stupid skills. I HATE that. I also dislike role playing too.
AO has pretty much none of these things, SOME people role play in some way, but its none of that mideval role playing garbage iv seen on EQ. A few otehr things i liked about it is the random merchants, you dunno what your gonna find cuz the merchants items always change. I love the style if the game, its almost a matrix/star wars type theme, with people alking around with cloaks and storm-trooper like armors that look totaly badass. I also like the vast ammount of items that there are in the game, not to mention how big AO is, specialy with the shadowlands expansion. and imo, the shadowlands has made it all the better. Sometimes i get sick of doing team missions and hunting at dynacamps, so i head over to shadowlands for a change, and go back to Rubi-Ka if i get bored of shadowlands or wanna do more missions.
AO is a game of math pretty much. You gotta know how to make your char right or you can severely gimp yourself.
Anyone can see he did not give the game a chance. I must stand with the others. The game is great. I would like to say that I think it only has another 2 years or so of playability before something else overruns it. But it will be a cult classic for a long time to come.
Kind of like Ultima Online is. That is a very old game but people still flock to it to play. Anarchy has proven it's place among the MMORPG's.

I don't blame you for finding AO hard to tap into. I installed/reinstalled AO three times before I found the game enjoyable. It took me that long for the game to 'click'.
Anarchy Online has what people call a "learning cliff". Much of what makes the game great isn't apparent at all on the surface.
To make your newb experience easier, I suggest a few things.
I wouldn't be so quick to judge the RubiKa graphics until I've visited one of the large cities, like Rome or Old Athens. Sure, it's a lot of grey, but I personally find the huge buildings of Rome awe-inspiring. And if you find yourself missing colour, just take a quick trip to Shadowlands where the graphics are alot more traditional-fantasy-like.
Hope you find your way into the bittersweet pleasure that is AO addiction.
I just downloaded AO and I love it. Fun game and most people are very friendly.
I love killing the 'leets' LOL especially when they die and say "suxxors". Hilarious!
It's even more fun to turn into a leet yourself and start calling other people mofo's
