Alright gents, this whole thing about semantics and wildness started with a some idiocy I put in ( ) at the end of some very valid observations. I recognized it was hyperbole before I even wrote it. The point I am making was actually something I said in the 2nd snippet I even said here. It was that the zombie thing played out of ideas in the 80's (and I'll go a stretch and even say mid 90's) as far as innovative cool new ideas. Everything since has been a "gorier" grittier version ever since, and this was before zombie games started popping up all over. My opinion on this whole genre remains as I previously said, the whole thing is good in a Tommy Wiseau's The Room is good way, it's just not. It's wildly more believable that people actually watch that show because it was an awe inspiring theatric masterpiece, than it is to assume this game is going to interject quality and anything meaningful into this genre with a name like URDEAD and visuals on par with what's shown here. The concept is about as original as World of Warcrafts' and will probably nab a small portion of that audience and everyone will have their fairy fruity cup cakes and live happily ever after. Please by all means, continue to buy into this absolute garbage, so that it will continue to proliferate and saturate our markets for generations to come. And when something brilliant and truly monumental comes around, feel free to insult and bicker every little minute detail when it does happen. In the mean time, enjoy arguing with eachother (and me when I actually have time to do more than just lurk).
I'll state a fact, this caught my attention not because it looked cool, or that it was a zombie title, but because I just could NOT believe a name like URDEAD was seriously considered enough in the first place to be on the drawing board. That is a fact, that's exactly what I thought. I was like oh god, how stupid is this going to be. I was floored. The line that specifically got me was "We want UDO to push the zombie apocalypse setting in some new directions." Cool beans. I hope they can pull it off, perhaps some part of me will be less bitter or cynical towards MMORPG's in the first place. As I said, if they happen to bound into the realm of top 10's or whatever, I'll eat a ice cream in their honor.
This became much more than "Will URDEAD be successfull?". In fact at no point in this thread did anyone claim this title was the QUALITY zombie mmo the genre needs, so im not sure where you were going with that? Most of this thread was just the same...dumb name = bad game argument. Which is of course such a valid and precise way to judge a games quality. No this thread evolved into a debate on wether or not there is a viable market out there for zombie themed media or has the "fad" died out? Slightly off topic? Yes but regardless still the debate at hand.
You state that everything since the 80's (and mid 90's) has just been "gorier" grittier versions of the zombie media of those times. Explain unique zombie movies like Fido, Shaun of the Dead or (the sick and twisted) Dead Girl, all movies released after 2000. Most of the zombie genre is, on a fluctuating scale, similar to each other but what genre doesn't suffer this? War movies? Westerns? Crime drama? Teen comedies? Romance? Fantasy? These are all genres that share similarities from story to story for the most part. I don't see any of these genres including the Zombie genre dissapearing because of this.
I totally agree that The Walking Dead is an awe-inspiring theatric masterpiece and has without a doubt played a part in its widespread success, but lets not forget this show started out as an indie comic and due to that comics rather extensive, large and lets not forget international fanbase it was transformed into a TV series. Are you honestly going to say that the fact that it has zombies in it has nothing or at the very least a minimal impact on why so many people enjoy it? Also explain why zombie costumes were the #5 most popular costume of Halloween 2012? Not Rick or Shane costumes but ZOMBIE costumes.
Not pointing fingers but I can't comprehend why anyone who has a problem with arguing would come to a public forum and put their ideas out for everyone to read? Thats like going to the beach and complaining about the sand. Debating issues is what public forums are for. If you can't be bothered to defend your arguments logically and factually then why bother posting them to begin with? I love a good debate and thrive on differing opinions but I will not stand by and let people just run off at the mouth without demanding an explanation.
So in conclusion will URDEAD be successfull? I don't know because I nor anyone I know can predict the future. I'll just have to wait and see and hope that it can pull it off. But the success or failure does not change the fact that Zombies have been around long before you or I and will still be around long after you and I have turned to dust. The Zombie "fad" has been going on since the dawn of civilization and no amount of crap games and campy movies is going to change that.
Actually, in one of the very first parts of this interview, they mention "We really trying to balance our own spin on a zombie apocalypse with our affection for the history of a genre." Basically they are trying to carve their notch in this tree trunk. At no point did I say anything about The Walking Dead in something you quoted from me, and when I was a kid I dressed up as a zombie for Halloween back in the late 80's. I'm sure a lot of children dressed up as zombies for halloween this year too, (we'll not go into anything other than meaningless dribble here, cause it is an MMO, not rocket science), we'll also take into consideration the population of the world has increased substantially from the years when zombie stuff was kinda sorta fresh. We'll just say World of Warcraft is the top selling MMO game ever, and probably will remain the most subscribed to and freakishly successful MMORPG that has ever happened for a long time. Does that mean I'm saying it's good? Hell no. Does that mean I'm saying this is a WoW clone, definately not. Throw your stastics out there, and bandwagon this baby all you want, I'm telling you I feel the way I feel, and I'll feel that way til the zombies come bashing my door in and stealing my ice cream.
Also, Shaun of the Dead is a satire on zombie stuff, it is comedy. Thank you.

I'm debating the Zombie genre as a whole (all facets of media) while you seem to be debating the genre on terms of this game alone in which case you are arguing with yourself because no one else is debating the issue of wether or not URDEAD will be successful. Quite frankly it doesn't seem like anyone so far in this thread could give a crap about that. If it works it will make money if not well POOF it will dissapear like many before. However if you are debating wether the Zombie genre as a whole is dead than this post is for you. Lets work backwards shall we. Lets color code it for convenience.

Do you truly believe that Shaun of the Dead can't be considered a part of the Zombie genre because it is a comedy? Shaun of the Dead is referred to as a ZOMEDY (look it up its a real term). Want to take a guess what thats a play on? Zombie Comedy perhaps? It is also a very innovative zomedy as it runs the full gamut of emotions..thus disputing your whole "no innovative zombie stuff after the 80's & mid-90's" argument.
YELLOW
I fail to see what this has even remotely to do with this argument? What does that even mean? When was Zombie stuff sort of fresh? Zombie stuff has been around for thousands of years. You do realize the world was created before the 80's right?

That quote seems to me like you are saying that The Walking Dead is popular solely on its cinematics and has nothing or little to do with zombies. If I mis-understood this I apologize maybe try to be more coherent next time. Again I think you are arguing about the success of this game in which case you are on your own buddy.

I would say your Green schpeel being an opinion (I was not taken on the emotional joy ride you seem to think it delivered, we're all entitled to our perceptions on this.), can be debated. There is nothing you can possibly say to sway me into thinking you're proving to me that zombie isn't done and over with before either of us were even born. This is my opinion. It is a fact that is my opinion. If you want to pick an intelligently formed opinion and put colors in there and that makes feel special, then I'm sure this game is geared for you to enjoy.
Your blue point, I never mentioned anything about The Walking Dead, in any post. Quite literally that paragon of television excellence has eluded my eyes. I did say it is wildly more believeable that Tommy Wiseau's the Room is watched because it is a theatrical masterpiece than it is to believe that this particular game is good. You can look that up, I'm sure you'll see how I feel about zombie stuff then.
Yellow, you commented about zombie outfits being the most popular at some point, I honestly don't care, won't care, and didn't care but you mentioned you failed to see what that pertained to. That line is pertaining to zombie outfits. In particular when I was a kid, I dressed up as a zombie one year for halloween. The world has increased in population since that time, and I am certain many more children have decided to dress up as zombies.
Red, who ever you were talking with and you were arguing over what appeared to be somebody highlighting an obviously comical and highly opinionated statement I made in parentheses. If you did not know the red statement was such, I am 100% certain this game will be extremely enjoyable for you. Good day.
@Sauteed_Onion. To be fair to Just_The_Facts, you did randomly jump into a discussion about The Walking Dead and it's success (or not) between Aeonblades, JTF and myself, and seem to believe the discussion was about something you had said earlier in the thread, most confusing but go back and read it.

Actually, I read it to begin with, and it was Just_The_ Facts that outlined in red a statement in parantheses asking me to explain the sucess of The Walking Dead. There is no explanation that will win the discussion, or give anyone piece of mind. Asking somebody to explain the sucess of something so bottom rung, baseless and flat out obscene with hints of "It's ok cause it's teaching people how to survive in the middle of a zombie apocalypse" snippets in there is like asking somebody to explain why World of Warcraft is so sucessful. Somebody in TVland saw all those viewers coming and was like here's our chance. I had this discussion with someone from Texas once. His excuse for telling me he enjoyed zombie stuff was "It could really happen". I'm sure it can, in the same probability level that dragons and magic consume the world and elves and gods destroy the world as we know it; but you don't see me thinking playing video games will teach me how to cast magic spells and do massive DPS to invading dragons and elves. Now, we can toss statistics around and because something has more views or is popular on TV or sold 500 bajillion copies world wide and think we're illustrating a point or whatever, then grab a line out of somebodies' post "they didn't know existed" and have people come in and say that person "they didn't know existed" randomly jumped in but what is the fun in that?

- Zombies are not...uh...dead? Wait....
- We love the Walking Dead.
