A company does spend over 300 million in a year buying out other companies, including a 15% stake in NCsoft unless they are making hand over fist in profits.

Don't know about you, when i do math if you have 1000 players and 1/4 pays at the free to play cash shop. How are they making money hand over fist? Player base on a lot of these Free to play games are low.. Now the companies are changing again, because they knew they lost money. The companies are slowly heading to buy to play with cash shops or Vip's..Again i am laughing at those who jump on the ban wagon and fall for the "Market Trick".. Sooner or later it will go back pay to play, when SOME of the players realize they got screwed all along on free to play..

Oh and proven fact if the companies were making money hand over fist on free to play..Why are they laying off, merging, or closing..The only ones who can put the bigger companies out of business are the small companies who does it right the first time..

    I rest my case...image

Did you actually read the article? Nexon are as big as EA and Activision individually, roughly $1.2 to $1.4 billion turnover in 2012 with a 24% increase from 2011 they are growing fast while EA and Activision are actually have a rough time of late, thus the rumour that Nexon were interested in buying out EA. Yep that f2p gimmick has really burnt out.

This doom and gloom thread was brought to you by Chin Up™ the new ultra high caffeine soft drink for gamers who just need that boost of happiness after a long forum session.

Funy thing, the f2p revenue model does really well in the eastern areas of the globe while just moderately successful here in the west.  The best revenue models I have seen lately are the hybrids, where you can start as f2p and subscribe if you like the game.  That, is a nobrainer for a western audience.  So just depends on who your audience is when it comes to what you offer in a revenue model.

Cash shop based games don't make a lot of cash, but the beauty is that developers can support a smaller community. When they have to cut back staff to maintenance levels and just pump out new cash shop based items their games can stay around for a much longer time.

4this is awesome. I am in so many arguement on the FF XIV beta forum over how p2p is slowly dying, yet every fanboy refuse to believe that and are just claiming that f2p isn't doing any money.

Now I have black on white proof.

Plain old Tab-targeting and the "kill 10 of these for no reason" quests along with a p2p model isn't going to work anymore and i think that is what the western developers need to realize. this isn't 2006 anymore!

but of course the stupid fanboys on that stupid forum has pretty much sewn their eyes close -.-

What I would like to see is how Ankama (Dofus, Wakfu) is doing trying to compete with all these big-timers. If im not mistaken, Dofus has been around for 8 years now. I would say that despite their pretty unique game only appealing to a fairly small minority of players, it still seems like it's going strong.

I spend money in F2P games I like... I don't play F2P games I don't like (because they suck)... but I'd pay more for a P2P game with a subscription to not have to deal with F2P jackoffs.

I know more people who DON'T spent money in F2P than who do however. Oh and once I get what I want (assuming you have anything I want) you won't see another dime from me either.

The more stuff that goes F2P, the more I'm seeing people wish there was subscription based stuff out there. Subs aren't dying, demand for it is increasing. Once people have had enough of this F2P scam nonsense (which actually ends up costing you a TON more than any subscription ever did, if you want to stay on top that is) they will all want to go back to subs. Subs cost less, they weed out the feeloading scum, the spam bots, the r-tards, you have a better comminuty... it makes it a private club where you have to pay admission to get in. That's a good thing.
