What would make PvP fun for everyone in a game?

I've spent a fair amount of time on the subject over the years.

If any of you have any thoughts please comment. If you do comment make clear points and explain your reasons.

So here is what I think.

1. PvP should be the players choice. No one should be forced into a pvp fight without having chosen to be there. For this reason FFA pvp in all areas of the game world do not work. There have been many games to prove this to be true and I know man of you have tried them. My solution is to have conflict areas where you get flagged for pvp the second you enter the conflict area and stay flagged for several minutes after leaving the area. If you don't want to pvp do not go into a conflict area.

2. BGs and Arenas are fine but when they award gear specifically for PvP is should only be used in that kind of event environment, not in open world pvp. I never have and never will like organized event driven pvp. For me pvp has to have an element of chaos and uncertainty.

3. PvP should have a reason to exist. I've never enjoyed pvp for the sake of pvp alone. Gear has never been a good reason for me to angage in pvp. I would rather see something like territory control (like in FFXI), resource control, foretress control and defence. Guild perks for pvp would be cool also.

I honestly think that more people would enjoy games with pvp if it was not forced on them and they could jump in and out at will.

The same thing that would make PvE fun for everyone. :/

PVP isn't one unified thing. It is player vs player interaction, most commonly player vs player combat. Just like PvM has open world, raiding, instances, and other variations that appeal to different groups, so does PvP. There is no ONE TRUE PVP to satisfy everyone.

There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

Different servers with different rules and systems. Probably be a bitch to code if not impossible. EQ did it to some degree. Even if somebody figured out a way to do it, you would probably spead the community so thin, everybody would cluster to the popular servers or quit, the more niche the rules

Just to mention a few pvp groups about death penalty

    -Those that want NO penalty

-Those that only want a mild penalty bearly noticable

-Those that want a noticable penalty but not enough to make you quit

-Those that want partial looting of player gear

    -Those that want full loot

-Those that want perma death and full loot

-Those that want some form of combination already mentioned or not.

That's not even factoring in those that want bounty systems, protected/unprotected areas, level range caps, etc etc etc

Most people I've talked to want the rules the same for all, so making some kind of personal tagging system would create a system that would again... alienate a lot of pvpers.

Reality is you will never see 1 game that will cater to all. You are just going to have to pick and choose between the games that has what you want
