Doesn't Richard G have hundreds of millions of dollars in the bank?
What does he need Kickstarter for?
I really think that Kickstarter is becoming to be abused by multi millionaires.
I really don't agree with your point.
I mean, let's say you worked your ass off for 30 years, built a company making the games you love, and amassed a good amount of wealth in the process. Now though, the games you love to make have fallen out of favor with investors, so you are forced to make social games just to get by.
You could theoretically fund a game yourself, but you would literally be risking your entire fortune on it. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't be willing to spend all the money I worked my ass off to make on a dream...even if I would much rather be working on my dream. And I don't think my family would be keen on that idea either.
I don't blame RG at all for seeking funding.
So I don't see anything wrong with wealthy people seeking funding through kickstarter...it gives the artists a direct relationship with the fans. I'm tired of marketers forcing artists to make crap that appeals to the "mass market" or maximizes profitablity, when both the artist and the fans want something else.
Kickstarter isn't supposed to be for charity cases only...it's for anyone seeking funding for a project directly from the potential consumers of said project.
Also...do you think that other popular kickstarter personalities like Brian Fargo or Feargus Urquhart are destitute ?
Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?
Nope.
And getting a judgement for millions of dollars in civil court doesn't mean you can actually easily collect it. Clever use of lawyers can really gum up the works.
Curt Schilling decided to self finance an MMO. He ended up having to try and raise money through traditional methods as well. And we know how that went.....
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.
