WAR: Should have been best game for explorer/lorehound types

Ive been fooling around with the WAR trial the last few days, and its made me depressed.

Why am I depressed? Because in all the talk about how WAR is a PvP game only and that its PvE is (supposedly) lame is that the game has great lore and more than any title I can think of in a long time encourages you to explore.

For those who have never played WAR, the key to all this is what is called the Tome of Knowledge. For an idea of what this is, think something like the SWTOR codex * bestiarys common in many RPGs * an achievement system blended together and on steroids. For example, for every mob type in the game when you kill it for the first time you get a typical bestiary unlock. In addition you get two new entries that show up. One is the standard kill 25 of that type you would expect. In addition (again, for every creature type) there is a special type of tome entry, which may involve finding a named of that type, a lair of that type, perhaps complete a specific task in a specific zone...variety of things. And when you complete them maybe you are rewarded with a trophy you can wear on you to show off what you did.

In addition, this tome has a full story for each of the 6 races as you progress through their zones. Doing a public quest unlocks a lore entry about that quest. Clicking on certain NPCs unlocks entries. Finding random things in that corner of the world where no quest leads to leads to entries. the size of this thing is astonishing.

And its mostly wasted.

Explorer types generally arent drawn to PvP titles, so many of the people that would enjoy this most have possibly never tried the game. And now it is so completely dead PvE wise. Public quests designed for 10+ people sit empty. All this lore-rich game world, with 6 different leveling progressions (one for each race) gather cobwebs.

And yes, PvE in WAR itself doesnt stand out. Its standard WoWish combat, but not as polished as WoW. However I do think the classes are varied and fun and have personality. PvE endgame is pretty non existent.

Still, Im having fun running around getting unlocks. I plan to sub (when mythics account management is up to..take my money!) and have fun poking about in the game world. Oh, Ill do some PvP too, even though Im not a huge PvPer. Ive enjoyed some DAoC action in the past, and I dig battlegrounds on occasion so i feel id enjoy the scenario variety in WAR.

SO I guess after all that TLDR, my question is this: would there be others interested in doing this sort of thing? AN MMORPG guild was recently successful in EQ2, but EQ2 can be enjoyed f2p while WAR cannot past level 10. But if you are the explorer type fire up WAR and give it a shot with the free to level 10 trial, see if its something you think would be worth a sub for a few months to do some lorehounding/exploring in.

It's the great shame of Warhammer and WH40K - mounds and mounds of lore, yet they never build it into their video games. What a waste.

WAR is swimming in lore...maybe it doesnt do the source justice to some people, but its probably the most lore rich MMO since EQ1, if not ever.

Some of us still do the PVE part once in a while. I'm close to 2800 unlocks at the moment.

Roll a WP or a DoK and you should be able to do a lot of stuff alone. On my Magus I can do all the PQ's T1/T2/T3 solo but she's rr98 in doomflyer. Only the hard PQ's in T4 are the ones I can't solo, except of a couple.

Some of the unlocks are bugged although and as PVE isn't the priority don't expect any fast fix for them.

Yeah, i understand that all dev time goes to PvP. Figuring Ill occupy myself casually for a while. Was playing around with a WP anbd they seem fun solo, but two issues i have were 1. I dont like playing humans 2. in PvP (or group PvE if that ever happens) I dont enjoy a healer role.

What other classes can solo well? Can Squig Herders solo well (pets dont seem to be strong in WAR)?

Welcome to WAR, Strangiato! Yes the world of WAR is vast and the lore is rich.

I'm in it mostly for the PvP myself but I do appreciate the strong personality this game has and anytime I see people LFM for a PQ, I usually join.

I've been back in WAR for almost 2 months now and I'm starting to feel that wonderful MMO addiction I hadn't felt for many, many years.

    @ Strang

Tanks could work I think, especially at higher level/rr with regen and some self-healing for the PVE.

Engeneer is also an option but doesn't have the survival of a wp. Although the engie is a fun class to play I think. I'm playing the Magus, it's mirror, and really fell in love with that toon. Avoid the mdps if you want to do the PVE part as they are too squishy.
