What MMO has the best and worst community?

MajiinXMajiinX Member CommonPosts: 89

I've been playing MMOs for over 10 years and have seen some of the best and worst MMO communitys have to offer, I'm curious what peoples opinions and experiences are in there games.

For worst I'm gonna have to go with Star Wars the Old Republic. Never have I seen so much negativity, eliteism and complaining. Between the forums and in the game itself there are so many nasty and arrogant players that always respond with snobby backhanded comments or outright insults to questions, anytime new features are implimented good or bad the forums are flooded with whining and complaining its really really bad and I know the game has many issues but a big issue with this game is the player base and their attitude.

The best community I've experienced was EQ2 the player base is generally very friendly and helpful many guilds are eager and recruit and help new players. Getting groups was always easy and there is so much group content and with the AA system many people do low level content to min/max their characters.

Worst:  LoL...  OR any dota-a-like really, but depending there might not be account based advancement.

Best:  Just about anything with a small community(usually meaning indy).  So WurmOnline would be the community I had the most fun with.

MMO specific community is irrelevant to me.

All my friends play multiple games. Many players play multiple games. If i met some nice people playing wow, and now some of us move to D3 .. is the D3 community nice? Or is the WOW community nice?

None have stand-out communites to me anymore.  LotRO used to be great, but it's way too small now and doesn't feel that special anymore.  It's mostly just F2P people running around doing their thing in the low levels before leaving.

A lot of games feel like they have no community, by design.  GW2, for example.  I see people, and sometimes I do stuff with them, but they feel like some NPC that's helping me more than anything else.  WoW has become very closed due to the CRZ stuff.  You're either running around with people from other servers that you have no desire to talk to, or you just stick to talking to your guild.

I guess Eve has a decent community, but it's a bit elitist and feels very small.

I noticed that EvE fealt very small even though it has the largest servers around...  In just about every aspect.

EVE for both the best and worst community, which is a good thing at the end of the day.

Best Community: Everquest 2 or Vanguard, most vets are willing to help newbies with gear and bags and showing them around the game.

Worst Community: TERA, the public chat is filled with racists pedophiles and bigots, non-stop remarks and trolling.

Worst : Any MMO that is kid friendly

Best : Any MMO that is not

Of the games I played I'll add top 2:

    Best Community:

    1. Asheron's Call
    2. DAoC
    Worst Community:
    1. Rift or WoW (both are equally bad)
    2. TSW

    From my own experiances

Worst = Any MOBA, Terra, Age Of Conan's Fury pvp server. WoW.

    Best = LOTRO, Ryzom, EQ2 , WoW.

  • sudosudo Member UncommonPosts: 697

Worst: EVE Online. Last time I came back, everybody in local and my own alliance (CVA) were using "Jew" as a curse word so much that I just quit.

Best: LOTRO on a roleplaying server. Yes, it does have a great community, even though it's a F2P game.

I was going to suggest LOTRO as the best game community, but I havent played in awhile and the above poster claimed it has changed. Im currently playing GW2 and loving it.  I find newcomes get their questions answered and it is easy enough to make friends and find groups. For worst, in my experience, I would have to go with Tera.  Overall the game was a huge disappointment for me and the community was miserable.

In general, I find competitive oriented games have the worst community, which is why I usually try to avoid PvP oriented games. GW2 is surprisingly different, maybe because you dont know who you are fighting so they are just anonymous.  I know many on here have complained about this anonymonity in the game, but I thing it is terrific and would not want it changed.

I will agree with GW2 has a pretty nice community. People are very eager to answer questions and help out lowbies and people are also willing to band together for public quests when they see other people participating and I tend to get rezed if there are other players nearby if i die.

SWG by far had the best community folllowed by vanilla wow up until TBC then guilds began to fracture as the raiding requirements died down to 25m level and the game started to become more closed and restricted to instances and LFG/LFR.

Best community I've seen is Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine.  It is a western translation of a Japanese game.  For the most part, the community was polite and cooperative.  People even stopped what they're doing to help each other.

Worst community?  That's a tough one to answer.  I don't stick around if a game is loaded with asshats and toxic chat.  None stand out as being worse than others.

EVE has the best and worst community.

Over the five years that I've played LOTRO, it has far and away the best community of any other mmo I've played. Only in LOTRO have I seen people give things away for free as a normal course of playing. Only in LOTRO has the advice channel been free of trolls. And only in LOTRO have I never seen a bot, known someone hacked or received a spam mail.

    That's freaking amazing.

Good to hear the LOTRO community is the same stellar community I remember when I was playing. I always liked to say LOTRO excelled in story and community.  I feel I would still be playing it if the combat was better.  After the combat in GW2 I really have a hard time dealing with rooted in place combat.   I tried logging in one day and tried dodging on my hobbit burglar before I realized what I was trying to do.

Probably because you rarely ever actually see anyone outside of the chat box.  Even in mass combat it doesn't feel like you're playing with other people too much.

    Vanguard for best

    SWTOR (Emp side) for worst

“It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”

Best I think is probably LoTRO.

Worst is APB. No Contest. If anyone other game besides APB obviously they haven't tried APB.

Swtor/GW2/WoW and any of those those ones are actually pretty stock standard of most MMO community and people are just hating if they are naming them as "worst". They are not particularly good or bad, just depends on who you ran into.

APB 90% of the people are rude and unhelpful in game, not to mention some people in that game actually thinks they are gangster.

    Best: EVE, DAoC

    Worst: MOBAs, in general

They can adjust a game all day, but they can't help the issue between the keyboard and the chair.
Played: UO, DAoC, AC, WoW, EVE, TR, WAR, Aion, Rift, SWTOR, GW2, TSW, ESO, Elite:D

EVE community are elitist and hateful in a small but pronounced way. Due to mechanics, that small amount of hateful and elitist people can make the rest of the community xenophobic. Break through that meta driven firewall and you can find a solid community. It could take a while though and you might find it really isn't worth it.

LotRO high level is still a good community. You just have to accept the low level for what it is. Alts, TP farming.

FF14 had a good coomunity. Mechanics weren't in their favor and the whole link shell thing just didn't give you the guild feeling.

WoW I never played but I saw elitism in the trials I was in and with the volume of account stealing and stuff Blizzard has had to face due to their success I can respect the players not wanting to be too friendly with just anyone.

I liked the Tera Online communitty but I was a part of it before launch, forget before Tera Rising. I can't say what that community is like now.

I find all you need to do is look for the eccentric drive. PvP? A bunch of guys standing around measuring their epeen. PvE gets a little more complex and depending on if the content allows for it, RP people can really define that imaginative spark in the games community. The more marathon grinder fests there are, the less you will see that aspect.

Games make the community as much as communities make the game. It's symbiotic.

    In my experience..

    Best:

Darkfall - People that I could call 'allies' were very friendly, going out of there way to get me gear, mounts, and supplies.  I remember one guy actually hit me up everytime I logged in and we would just chat about what we were going to do for the day and if we needed help.  These guys were ready to answer any question I had and they were down to do whatever. Of course my enemies were not so nice.

WoW - Yes, there's the douchebags and the game is solo friendly so you can choose to not interact with people.  But where's the fun in that?  Finding a good guild, or a good group of people to pvp with, or whatever makes a total difference in this game.   The trick is to try and avoid the elitist jerks if you are not ready or unwilling to take part in that competitive side of the game. Also, I highly recommend the US - Mal'Ganis server.  Best server I played on.  It has everything.

    Worst

Tera - I only played the game for a few days but I ran into the horde of pissed off gamers that seem to flock to every new game now.  People were constantly trolling each other, people were constantly looking for fights (over the interwebs), people were being jackasses.  I have never seen so many people get into an angry argument over what makes a central processing unit (CPU) run the fastest.
