Why is it bad to pre order a game but ok to pledge hundreds..maybe thousands on kickstarter?

Because the developer, who was the original developer of Wasteland came out and said: "If we get XX dollars, we'll make the game from start to finish. If we get more, we'll add in extra stuff." Sounds good. But for an MMO, the amount of money required to make a good, functional game from start to finish is exponentially more. Most times, these guys promoting an MMO, are doing a KS to fund a tech demo or get into pre-alpha. But then what? For Wasteland2 it was to do the whole game. That is the difference, and why I don't think MMOs and KS mix particularly well. (And even now, the KS for the Camelot Unchained MMO has run out of gas and will not likely make the $2 mil they wanted.)

The underlying issue is the same. You get nothing but big promises and how they are going to change the gaming genre.

...And we hear that from every developer, but we get the same old games everytime.

and that is why you don't see my shelfing out money unless i know a game is fun.

You can't do that unless the game exists.

    lulz^...

I've notice in nearly all your post, that you are simply afraid to try anything that required a commitment from you. Whether that commitment is monetary, time, or to others... you simple at every oppertunity expound within MMORPG.com how uncommited you are to the genre and the games you play.

The industry cannot sustain freeloaders like you.

Plz, re-read you post (in this thread alone..)  as you only play F2P, or anything with a trial. You jump from game-to-game, not spending any money...   and then...     oddly you spend thousands of hours on this website thread-capping on how frugal & uncommited you are.

None of your logic makes sense..     please explain your posts..!

Hmm, people who already get the kind of games they want from traditional games publishing won't fund a kickstarter. I have to say, this is totally and absolutely shocking to me. I never saw this coming and I swear I am not being sarcastic at all. I am totally, absolutely sincerely surprised at this crazy result that is coming from out of nowhere.

    /sarcasm

Seriously, OF COURSE certain people don't like kickstarter. It puts risk on them instead of the devs and publishers when they are already getting all the games they desire without any risk from the industry. I don't wanna call anyone a sheep. But...

How is this even a discussion? Do we need 50 posts from Narius telling us he doesn't like kickstarter? Its not exactly news. Same for Torvaldr.

Kickstarter is fabulous for the kinds of games that would never have been mad otherwise. I am too poor to kickstart but, there are some games I have started saving up for. And I already bought FTL. Personally if only half the kickstarters I am watching end up with a playable game I will consider KS the savior of gaming.

I am sorry but people who are kickstarting projects are also businessman and quite rich too. Yes there are some very small indie devs and there is this one guy alone making a MMO but it would be foolish to think that business men's drafts boards are not involved.

And yes you got something to lose... your money.

Kickstarting and Pre-ordering are both terrible ideas, and one I'll never do again. I've been burned enough. It's been about 5 years since my last preorder, and I plan on keeping that streak alive.

i find it very pointless to preorder a game (not only mmos) IF u dont get anything special for it. if u get exactly the same content with no extras like someone who buy this game weeks after preorder then its not worth it.

    kickstarter is completely different.

If we need 50 posts from those who like KS, i don't see a problem for people to air other side of the argument. Do we need 50 posts from you telling us you like KS?

Yeah KS is completely different. It is much worse. There may not be any game.

No need to hope. i solve that problem by NOT giving them any of my money.
