Paying for a potential game?

nateslonateslo Member UncommonPosts: 49

I'm not quite sure how  I feel about the perks (game copies, beta access, custom content)  for MMO kickstarters. I have to admit it is a little tempting to get internal testing access but It seems like a funny trend that people now pay for games before they are even made.

I remember thinking that it was strange that people would pay for a game they haven't tried just for beta access. Those were almost finished games. These kickstarters are still early prototypes.  "Here is my money, see you in 3 years to play the beta"

I understand that the game market is changing and developers are finding new ways to bring their ideas to life. And I also understand that many people feel very strongly about certain games and want to see them succeed.  I just find it odd that the time between payment and delivery is getting bigger and bigger.

Kickstarter is probally one of the best things to happen to the gaming industry in the last few years.

Without it many of the upcoming sandbox mmos that are looking so good might never have existed.

Games liek the new chivalry, endless space, FTL and so on might never have existed and they where some of the best games from last year.

myself I think of it like pre-ordering a game, i never go too crazy and give them $100s or anything i just usually give what i think is a fair price for a game, usually between $20 - $50.

The thing is AAA publishers are only interested in making mega bucks and they think the only way to do that is by making WOW clones and COD clones.. thats why nearly every AAA title released over the last few years is basically exacly the same as other games on the market. its getting boring to tell you the truth... kickstarter has allowed indie devs to easily get hold of funding to make some truly amazing games.. it also allows them to make the game how they want it to be without big publishers pushing them in certain directions and so on.

Anyway for me Kickstarter is a very good thing as I am now gonig to get to play a lot mroe Sandbox mmso than I ever would have... and the popularity of sandbox mmos on kickstarter has made a few big companies notice like SOE woh have now said their next everquest game will be a sandbox..

of course I am 100% sure there will be some bad apples on kickstarter just try and do a bit of research into the game and company.. dont jsut back anything that sounds like its going to be awesome :)

Also the main thing at the end of the day its totally your choice you dont need to back anything at all..
