...buyer beware. Since hearing about DF:UW upcoming release recently, I've been reading threads and watching press releases. Basically, everything I read has told me that a.) the game isn't ready for release and won't be for several months; and b) since I'm a casual player due to real life responsibilities and time commitments, I won't be able to progress fast enough or find a good clan in order to enjoy the majority of the game.
So I guess I'm going to pass on DF:UW, just like I did on DF. I'll wait until there's a trial. Thanks everyone for helping deter people away from this game. Last thing I wanted to do was spend another $50+ on a game I'll only play a few days.
P.S.- I just want to clarify. I don't require fast progression in a game. I played DAoC in its prime and I liked how long it took me to get my first maxed out character. I love grouping up to progress, but I'd be forced to solo 4 days out of the week due to long night shifts and only getting 2 hours of playtime after work...between 5am-7am EST.

However, just because a game is not totally polished does not mean that it won't be worth the money. Skyrim was as buggy as fetch, but I still loved playing it, as did millions of other people. I think DFUO is complete enough to have lots of fun when it releases.
Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't DFUO cost $30.00 until the 12th, including a month of game time? I think after that it goes up to $40.

Very sad about your rl situation, but me and most of my guild will be there on the 16th.
Progressing solo in UW is actually pretty fast. Roughly a month at ~10hrs a week. The main reason people say its not launch ready is because it is missing stuff, but the stuff its missing isn't core feature of the game. If you like PvP, sieges, large battles, FPS combat, politics ran by players then all that is in the game. If you want epic dungeons to explore, epic mobs to kill, epic loot then UW isn't likely the game for you anyways since these things aren't the focus of the game.

Definitively sounds like it'd be better to wait much longer before even thinking about putting money on DFUW or at least I have no plan of suggesting the game to anybody until then.
Getting there is part of the game, it isn't like this game isn't fun until you hit max, its just the best time because you can switch between whatever you want role wise, use different weapons, have a full bank and go out and constantly do whatever. Launch is going to be the best time to play the game with the most happening and the best pvp. The content and fluff can come later when players get bored of killing each other, the pvp alone was enough to entertain the DF 1.0 population for 3 years. Everyone is on an equal playing field right on launch other than the knowledge you could of gained in beta if you pre ordered in the last 5 months and the population will be at his highest and most concentrated during the first month.
I feel you on this one man. Might as well save the money and the hassel. If you have to solo that much you might as well play Skyrim.
DF UW just going off everything I have seen so far is going to be a let down. It's going to release with a million things to fix. Saw some of the latest vids too and for 2013, it's just not going to cut it. Ripper X does a good job of selling it for them, but as much as I like your vids Ripper I still won't be buying this game. I saw some gameplay vids, it just doesn't look like my cup of tea and it looks like it needs help.
Play some skyrim and when you get time for mmo gameplay try out GW2 it's buy to play and leveling is fun. It's a friendly game for someone with your kind of schedule. It also has appeal to the hardcore crowd as well. I think skyrim is $40, and GW2 is the same, so .... $80 and well you could have enough to do for at least 6 months because ESO and Wildstar should be launching sometime this year. Those two games will be worth checking out, but if they turn out to be bad there will always be good ole Skyrim and GW2 and really those two games could keep someone occupied for the next 2 years. By then I'm sure GW2 will launch and expac or two so probably even longer than 2 years.
If you think PvE that fules PvP and maxing a character in 40hrs is a grind when there isn't mandatory character development past that then I question why you play MMOs. The focus of the game is PvP, sieges, politics, clan warfare. The game does not focus on PvE content that most PvE MMO Themepark players enjoy i.e. scripted raid bosses, dungeons (they exist in the game world and are decent) and the game does not have "epic gear" because all the gear can be crafted and taken away from you.
Edit: If you think GW2 is a good subsitute for DFO/UW then you are probably better off staying away from the UW. They are nothing alike, GW2 is completely linear game play with meaningless PvP outside ladder tournments. On that note: EvE, ArchAge, MO, The Repopulation (when launched) may be good alternatives.

Not sure where you got GW2 from, I tried it in Beta and found it to be awful.
I played DF for a little under 2 years starting at Launch, I did plenty of grinding there. It's just that I find the concept that one must PvE for 40 hours to be competitive in PvP in a PvP game to be fundamentally flawed development-wise. PvE shouldn't be mandatory in that way. Then again, DF wasn't exactly a Sandbox, but more of an Arena with politics and e-peen competition added on top. DFUW doesn't seem all that different it seems, especially with the additional limitations input (alignement, roles, etc) and the lack of many features to be released on an unknown date, which gives me an awful feeling of Deja vu that's making me want to say Darkfall 3.0.
The GW2 comment was directed at people suggesting it as an alternative. Madness, your issue seems to be that you don't like RPGs. RPGs require PvE to fule conflict and other stuff. Without it, nothing has meaning.

I'll be there as well. Having beta access I already know I've spent my money well. I have no doubts first month(s) will grant me lots of fun, the question here is if AV can manage to make it better in the long run (compared to DF1).
That is Your opinion and as you pointed Darkfall was always PvE just as much as PvP and PvE has always been the meaning to get to PvP. You can never ditch PvE completely, even if you personaly stop doing it, most of PvP you do happens around PvE content.

I'm not against the existence of PvE in DarkFall. Rather, it deserves to be an important part to offer players a wider range of activities. My problem comes when it becomes mandatory to PvE to become strong enough to PvP. I'd much prefer players to be able to become stronger by fighting other players, and have PvE as a side-activity to PvPers, and not a main focus. I'd rather the focus on PvE be something targetting more Crafters or Merchants for the ressources and trades rather than a mandatory stage for PvPers (excluding of course the first few hours for new players to get used to the game). With the Global Banking, PvE isn't fueling conflict all that much.

And no, I'm not referring to MMOFPS, I'm referring more about sandboxes and giving players more freedom rather than forcing them on a single path towards character development. It's a shame to put so much constraint in a game that once claimed to be about freedom.
Are you refering to the roles Madness? The roles were needed because without them, it took way to long to be PVP viable. Now, you are able to focus on a role and be pvp viable very quickly. You can still allocate stats the way you want and you are not pigeonholed into a certain role. Mind you, if you keep switching out roles and spreading out your stats then it will take you much longer to be pvp viable.
the problem with df is not that it is a bad game or that aventurine does not have any clue how things should work.
but there promise to much and deliver too slow.
Not referring to the roles, although I do find them to be very limiting and their spells to be a bit ridiculous, I'm not against this form of soft-cap.
One of the reason I've often compared DarkFall to a Themepark is that, like most (if not all) themeparks have the players run from Lv.1 to Lv.80 before they are finally able to enjoy the "End Game". Main difference is that in DarkFall, rather than levels you're just grinding skills (or prowess now) for 40 hours before you get to reach what would be the equivalent of "End-Game" to follow the same analogy, and that is the PvP in DarkFall.
Which is not to say that players should necessarily be super proficient in PvP from the get-go, but I think these players should definiitvely be able to bring a fair amount of contribution to battles, and acquire the rest of the necessary strength as they continue to battle other players. If there's no possibility for character advancement in PvP in a PvP game, then the PvP is really just no better than an End-Game PvP in Themepark games, even if that end-game becomes accessible in just a few weeks.

The game is FAR from ready. I would say about 1 more year at the pace AV has been doing things.
The game is lacking in so many ways. I was just running around in game a few minutes ago and it is such a piece of crap. How the hell can AV actually try to pass this off as a finished product?
The hype for this game is at an all time low, It won't last very long. Sure the first 30days might be fun enough with players trying to get the most out of it since they just wasted/spent money buying it. But after that... I dont see much of a population sticking around.
