IGN: Defiance's Game-TV Crossover is Disappointing

VolgoreVolgore Member EpicPosts: 3,872

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/04/09/defiances-game-tv-crossover-is-disappointing

“[Content] is relatively set now, because a lot of things have to be determined up front for creating game content or shooting a TV show,” explains Trion Worlds’ VP of development Nathan Richardsson. “Tie-ins with the TV show for when both go live aren't that many, but going forward there’ll be much more of the dynamic content [and they] will have a bigger effect on each other.”

Michael Nankin, supervising producer :  “We don’t know yet if there’s going to be a season two"

I hope everyone enjoys the game as is, because "but what we do in game will affect the show!" is not going to happen anytime soon and "there will be many seasons coming, so accordingly the game will receive tons more content" is not yet fixed at all.

I t**d y*u s* -guess the missing letters.

Wow. I'm sorry, but making a tie-in game for a TV show without being guaranteed at least two seasons just screams 'bad investment' to me. It will be interesting to see how this turns out in a year or so...

I never could figure out what we in the game could do that would be in the show lol I understand stuff from show changing game tho, but really what could the players in game do that would chaneg the show, especially since the show is a yr ahead of us in development most liekly. My guess is more of a shout out to players by the cast a season later at most.

I never expected too much of a connection between the show and the game.  I kind of assumed when they set them in two different cities, that it was an obvious way of segregating them.

Still, I think it's a good effort on Trion's part to try something new.  Maybe this will be the first step into a new interactive medium that other companies can take up later.

Maybe, as tech progresses and developers get a feel for working with TV companies,  we'll start to see some genuine interactivity in the near future.

Well it's a risk that Trion thought it was worth taking.

As for being able to guarantee 2 seasons without recieving ratings for the first season, well it goes without saying that no network worth it's salt will pay for another season if you don't get bums on seats to watch the first.

I'm looking forward to the show, and currently enjoying the game but they will need to add plenty more content as the season progresses otherwise things will become stale.

Yes, as it has been explained numerous times now...

The game will not effect the show until after the first season. This was clearly stated by Trion.

The show does in fact tie into the game though as we have seen from the 15 minute preview and the first story missions.

They have planned for a season two, but no they aren't guaranteed one. No show is guaranteed a second season. It depends on ratings. Monday night is a good slot and they have next to no competition in the scifi area.

Trion actually hasn't invested in the TV show, Syfy has invested in the game and explained that the TV shows are always a loss what makes it a success or not is number of viewers to bring in those advertising dollars.

I'm not sure who you told what, but I would wait until things have happened prior to celebrating.

Hes one of the anti Defiance people who are just trying to rile up people into an anti Defiance forum. Problem is everyone knows who they are. So there isn't a point. Everyone knew this information who cared enough to research it or read about it, but the people who don't are just going to hate the game more because they are constantly posting about it.

First of all, IGN has some of the worse reporting, but the best funding. They have highly biased views, and will throw a good review to anyone for a price.

That said, everything you listed is pue speculation. Yes, they do not know ifthere will be a second season, niether did The Walking Dead at the time before the show launched. The same can be said for just about every TV show ever made. They do not start filming multi-million dollar sequels before they know if the first season was a failure, or a success.

As for content, the story has been written out for several years worth of content, if the TV show fails, it does not mean that the game will no longer get content, they will still be able to release new content. The game was designed to run stand alone just in case.

The developers of the game, and the producers of the show both planned out worst case scenerios.

As for the game, I feel I have already just about gotten my $60 dollars out of it, other then some typical launch time problems such as server issues, I have a had a lot of fun.

Love it? Nah, enjoying it? Hell yes.

$60 dollars may seem like a lot of money to some people, but honestly that is only 15 gallons of gas, 12 hours worth of movies at a theater, 12 Mocha Frapacinos, 1 night out at Red Lobster, a hand job behind the casino...

$60 bucks doesn't buy as much as it used to, sure the economy sucks, but it's just a game, if you don't think you will like it, don't buy it. It doesn't get any more simple than that.

Troll on Volgore, I'm sure you have deterred at least a couple forum members, pushed them over to the Hater side with you, even though they may have enjoyed the game if they hadn't read one of your post.

Even tho I really don't have any plans of playing it anytime soon when I was planning to play it I was hoping they would add more story that reflected what was going on in show into the game and hopfully have big event's or something every week or couple weeks thru the season or somehting.

Trying to discredit a negative review by accusations of journalistic integrity about positive reviews is not only tacky, but pointless.

Unless you are implying one of the other PvE MMOTPSs paid for a negative review?

Except that the "tie-in" was the #1 promo feature when Trion spoke about the game -while up to today it's not even shure if it will happen.

Turns out to be another PR gimmick like the "trial servers for an upcoming promotion incl. a huge influx of new players" in Rift.

I'm pretty sure they'll get Syfy to get them a 2nd season...I mean this is the channel that has Super "insert animal"-"insert animal" B-rated movies on all the time lol.  I'm not sure how you could actually rate this yet, seeing as how the show hasn't even come out yet...but I guess something to troll with is something to troll with lol.  I'll trust Trion over IGN anyday...

Nope trying to point out that I know several years ago a company I worked for sent the IGN office a few goody bags, which surprisingly the review changed about a week later "after spending more time with the game".

IGN also has been known for publishing quick reviews of games they know has a lower fan base, not giving the game a fair shake.

Not tackey or pointless when it is with in the context of the original post baseing the OP's speculation as fact because an IGN article has the same speculations.

My issue with defiance is the lack of.. unique content, I'm ego level 180 or 190, and so far every single mission has been the same run around click 2-3 glowies with 0 changes. Arkfalls are boring because they never have any variation, why not have say a hellbug arkfall where maybe random mutants might try to attack it as well, (as well as attacking the players). Its not a bad game persay, but it needs more variety in things to do because as they currently are, its pretty much doing the exact same mission over and over in diffrent locations. Where the gameplay is not all that great (its a shooter, and not even one as good as tabula rasa) you really notice all the flaws with the game.

Also judging by the garbage on tv today, they will have to bomb the tv series horribly to not get a season 2. then again that tv show "V" never got a second season.

Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:

    A. Proven right (if something bad happens)

    or

    B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)

Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!

The quotes by both parties could have easily been taking out of their original context and manipulated just like 90% of the news you watch on TV.

It's what ever gets the most viewers.

The point I made about IGN is still valid. I will not except anything they write as a worthy source of information, just I like I don't watch Fox news.

The absolute fact is, you formed your opinion about Defiance a long time ago and for some weird reason you can not let go of the fact that it disappointed you and move on, you have to keep coming back to it and making post to, well, to try and Defy Defiance.

I guess I just don't understand the attraction to trying to deviate as many people as I can from the possability of making their own choices.

Or perhaps it's some sort of vendetta againt Syfy, or Trion? If you don't like the game, then move the hell on and enjoy your life, and I am pretty sure it will no longer have any effect on your life at all!

Even if it was a completely crappy, garbage game there is no point to returning to the forums and posting, "This game sucks!" every couple of days.

It's old, and every game out there has a small handful of die hard haters that for some reason just can not let go.

I am far from a fanboi of the game, so far it's been entertaing, but I honestly don't see any long term value from it unless the TV show does take off.

I do not intend to defend the game to anyone, I had someone ask me if I would recomend the game, I said, "No". I recommend if you have $60 bucks and any interest that you try the game for yourself and form your own opinion.

I am pretty sure both the parties involved with the game and the tv show would have given a statement if anything that they said in this article has been mis represented by IGN.

Stop making stuff up please. We get it you don't like IGN. But so far your accusations regarding IGN mis represnting or twisting what was actually said is just pure assumption and baseless accusations.

The game can get rather reptitive in many aspects.

I do disagree with the Arkfalls though, I have seen quite a few variation, and I have seen battles between NPC's at Arkfalls, perhaps not intentionally, but I was first on seen at a mutant arkfall which must have spawned on the nest of Skitterlings because it was an all out war when I showed up, and at one point a Monarch showed up and started killing Mutants.

I have fun with Arkfalls, Racing to them and just emptying clips into stuff.

As I said previously though, eventually it will get old.

I'll try to explain it, but you seem a bit stuck in NyahNyahNyah mode, so I don't know if it will do any good.

On Nathan's comments:  A live event in game takes some doing. Tying it in with a TV show introduces a whole new level of logistics and organization. It seems the smart move is to go in easy, work out the kins and then increase both frequency and impact when you have an idea of how it will all play out.

On Mike's comments: That's true of almost every TV show in existence... ever. Season Two is never a guarantee. If people like it and it makes the studio money, there's another season. If not, there isn't.

Did someone at Trion run off with your girlfriend or something?

I've been trying to be kind to those who are playing this game. From my point of view though, it maybe the worst product of the past two years.

I was rooting for the game the moment they put it on the Trion website after the launch of RIFT. Then I found out it would be incorperated with a TV show. Fast forward two years, I then played the game.

Uninspired design vision, lack of creativity in systems, underfunded, and rushed. That's what comes to mind when I think of the game. Terribly disappointing coming from Trion. A company I praised and saw as the standard bearer for polish and speed of content delivery. Swtor is a better mmorpg.

Maybe all Trion can do is copy. Judging by these last  two games. End of Nations being worse than defiance, bad enough to be scrapped.

For those of you that think IGN doesn't spew out of context...Here is Nankins response tothe question..in full context...

"So if that was pre-production, what will you have to deal with in the second or third season, if they go ahead? Have you planned for that?

We don’t know if there’s a season two yet. But supposing there is, I think there’ll be a much richer integration in season two than there is now, because we’ll have six months of gameplay. Because we made that show while the game was being built, and no one’s ever played it - it hasn’t been out in the world. Now we’re going to see what they like about the game, what they don’t like about the game, how the characters are tracking.

We’ll have the storytelling from the players to draw from as we go into season two. And plus, there’s an enormous amount of energy in building the highway between the game and the show, and figuring out the logistics of how we’d work together. Now that’s done, and we can concentrate on what elements are going to thrive on the highway. So season two, I think it’s going to be a whole different ballgame. "

This news doenst make the game less fun.

It would be nice to have a toal tie in with a TV show, despite i probably wont find a wat to watch it since i dont do TV (i game instead)

It was a good oppertunity to get a negative thread going on this game, and the OP took it.  I dont blame him for that.  Nor do i blame the other people who jumped at the oppertunity to trash the game.  Just how this forum works.

Nothing but the politicialization of mmorpgs.  Support your side trash the other, never give up!

It does get old, and its with every game, aside froma  few select that have an over whelming fourm defense squad including mods who ban for negative posts.    But every game other than the one or two protected games is apparently garbage in every way shape and form....according to the posters at least.

I dunno you can call me stupid for liking a game you dont, dont really care to be honest.  I enjoy the game for what it is, when it loses its entertainment value ill move on like a normal adult.

"Rabble rabble rabble!!! only 25% of content will tie in GAME SUCKS LOLOL"  wish these kids had a hobby that involved a skill that improved society rather than wreck it (at least online)

Considering this "Maybe the worst product of the past two years" right there alone puts your opinion lower than any one person has gone before on my scale. Have you bought any games in the last two years? There are far worse all over the place.

You rooted for the game for two years, then played it for two days and wrote it off?

Uninspired? Lacks Creativity? This is something nobody has attempted yet, they created several new complete languages for this, and several alien races....what is not creative?

Almost everything you said in this one post is ignorant and unjustified. So your opinions continue to stink...errr.. sink.

In my humble opinion, what I saw of the show looked corny. I think the game story is more interesting so far. Granted, there is little to go on for the show. There aren't a ton of great shows that come out of scifi. BSG was only good for two seasons.

If you enjoy the game, would you suddenly quit because the show went under? If Trion had a successful product, they wouldn't suddenly stop writing new content because the show is gone, so why does any of that article matter?

The show and game are just two components of a new sci-fi universe. Just like WoW or LotRO or most other games.
