Your general thoughts on ARR?

KurushKurush Member Posts: 1,303

I played FFXI way, way back.  I grabbed it not long after the NA launch (I think the first month), but I played for a relatively short period.  I was going to jump back into FFXIV, but I saw the early reviews, and I decided to give it a pass.  I'm wondering if I should try ARR.  I thought I'd ask some of you guys some questions, to get a feel from some actual players.

I know not all of you have played it, but from what you've seen or heard, do you feel that ARR brings the game up to part with modern MMO's?  I don't expect anything great.  I just want the usual staples: a decent UI, a working auction house, proper communication systems, combat which doesn't require excessive clicks/keypresses to execute one ability.

Oh, and a nice community would be good.  Do you think there will be enough players in the server to make the game enjoyable?  I know FFXI still has enough players kicking around to keep several servers open, all these years later.  Will FFXIV have at least one bustling server?

Also, will the game be F2P?  Or will I have to buy and sub to try it out?  I don't mind doing so.  I'm just wondering.

Its P2P and I'd wait for phase 4 open Beta and try it yourself, one mans junk is another mans treasure, my opinion and another persons opinion isnt always the same, and that reflects throught this forum.

When is ARR supposed to launch?

There is no official release date.  Most are expecting sometime in July or August.

Due to frequent travel in my youth, English isn't something I consider my primary language (and thus I obtained quirky ways of writing).  German and French were always easier for me despite my family being U.S. citizens for over a century.  Spanish I learned as a requirement in school, Japanese and Korean I acquired for my youthful desire of anime and gaming (and also work now).  I only debate in English to help me work with it (and limit things).  In addition, I'm not smart enough to remain fluent in everything and typically need exposure to get in the groove of things again if I haven't heard it in a while.  If you understand Mandarin, I know a little, but it has actually been a challenge and could use some help.

Also, I thoroughly enjoy debates and have accounts on over a dozen sites for this.  If you wish to engage in such, please put effort in a post and provide sources -- I will then do the same with what I already wrote (if I didn't) as well as with my responses to your own.  Expanding my information on a subject makes my stance either change or strengthen the next time I speak of it or write a thesis.  Allow me to thank you sincerely for your time.

Honestly I don't understand why the decided to go with weapon skills as opposed to the system they used in Final Fantasy Tactics. I would have prefered a job system where you would level up your class by obtaining job points or AA talents. More importantly seeing as they screwed the pooch on its original release, i would have expected them to go the route of optional payment models or just go B2P and add a cash shop. P2P is going to cause it to fail in the long run imo.

    [mod edit]

Yes, the game is being brought up to modern MMO standards; modern UI, they are bringing something similar to an AH, chat systems, and yes, non-menu driven combat (as in FFXI). It will be more on par with modern MMOs, such as WoW, GW2, etc. (in those areas)

As for community, we will have to wait and see when open beta hits or launch to se where that will stand I guess. I do think there will be enough players, but that is my opinion based on what we have seen, especially on what we have seen in the Live Letters and with what Yoshi did with version 1.0; the devs are listening. :)

The game will be P2P. Technically you have to buy it, but if you got version 1.0 and had a service account you cna download the game for free. There will also be a free trial. :)

Also, don't listen to haters. Try the game when it comes out (or is in open beta/get into the closed beta) and judge it for yourself.

PS. If you have a Square Enix account, I think you get gauranteed access to Phase 3 of the Beta; and phase 4 is open beta so you can totally try it then. If I am not mistaken.

The game is under NDA, so please do not post opinions or impressions if you have played. Thanks.

That is a very good point :)

Boycotting EA. Why? They suck, even moreso since 2008.

because Square-Enix is going to show FFXIV: ARR in Nico-Nico Event this 27th and 28th, they added an EXCEPTION on NDA, i will post 2 official moderator posts here as proof:

    and this:

Take this in consideration for this game NDA bans

ARR looks neat so far :)

To be honest even FFXIV pre ARR was better than most mmo's I have played.  Not pre abyssea  FFXI great but good enough to keep me coming back.  As long as they keep that "final fantasy" feel to the game I am excited about it.  What is a final fantasy feel?  I dont know how to answer that but by spending time in the tera and gw2 worlds; Eorzea just has that classic final fantasy feel to the game.

This is the first Final Fantasy game I have played got beta invite and I was pleasantly surprised to how good it is I will be buying this one. I love Zelda games and i'm not sure if its the music or the Japanese art style but it reminds me of Zelda and yet its not like Zelda.

i would be shocked if it released anytime before August

Trying to stay within the realm of the NDA I'll just say....try to grab a beta key and see for yourself :D. Their were 580k players at the end of beta phase 2, and they are planning on adding "many more" for phase 3.

    IS a game for gamers.

IS NOT a way to get money like other games.

580k have applied for the beta, but that's not how many were accepted.. how many were accepted is closer to 200k.

During the nico nico event in Japan, YoshiP said the next phase of beta won't be available until early june.  That pushes the release date up a month.  The game won't release until August (at the earliest) but open beta is considered official release for those who get accepted.

Barring any unforseen catastrophe, what you do in open beta carries over to official release.
