When Trion picked up publishing rights for Archeage , I couldn't think of a better company to do it...but now with the company failures this could be the last nail in the coffin for Trion. End of Nation fail, Defiance fail, layoffs, Rift f2p...this has not been a good year for Trion...I love the company but maybe they aren't as good as we originally thought?
playing: Dragon Age
Waiting: for FF14, Mass Effect
Want to try: Fallen Earth

Its a tough climate right now for game development and entertainment in general.
Trion is doing rather well, and I don't think their failures as of recent will effect ArcheAge's future. However, I could just be optimistic.
every single game company goes through bullshit, doesnt mean they are about to shut down the whole company...you have any idea what a big company like square-enix went through in their companies life? Now they are one of the most richest and respected in the game industry. Layoffs and stuff like that happen all the time in businesses.
Really? doing well? yes you are being very optimistic seeing as Rift is going f2p because of it failing, Defiance is nor selling well and End of Nations didn't even get out of beta, where is is this company making any money?
OP you might want to contribute to my other thread on the subject.

If you are referring to Square Soft nearly going out of business well you know what happened there? Final Fantasy. Unless Trion pull an FF its going to be tough and I don't think AA is going to be an FF.

Well i was never a big Trion fan,so i guess i also worried about Archeage just for a different reason.
Here is the thing that is happening as of right now withTrion and this game.
ZERO marketing, this in the day and age where many are complaining of the massive amount of marketing in their face.
Second thing is we have begin to see some ideas we might not like,Trion has the power to make changes, they are doing that as of right now.
My point is if this game does not come out the way people want, you can partly blame Trion, they have the power to hold this up for changes. So far the only changes is in character customization, this is what Trion considered an important change,i hardly share that sentiment.
I simply do not think Trion is a very good developer and as a publisher i have seen nothing to change my feeling.Remember their number one hit RIFT,the game they needed to make right? They gimmicked the Beta it was nothing but very limited testing and they released the game immediately after Beta,so they took no time to work with feedback at all. Then when they did launch they did not have enough room ,that after a very successful beta that showed a high level of interest, they SHOULD have been better prepared.
I bet more of the same come time for AA,you watch 4 Beta weekends, then an immediate release.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
they had other bad times through out the companies history other than that...such as the time they lost a lot of money after they made spirits within.
they have been close to bankruptcy plenty of times yet they keep on chugging, its one of the reasons they merged with enix before.
It's a never ending battle imo. Just keep fighting until you break in.
I don't know much about End of Nations, but the kind of problems Defiance is experiencing is normal. Making an MMO with all the promises that were made is difficult if not impossible; Defiance was a victim of its own hype.
As for Rift, there is not a single MMO out there that went from s2p to f2p that did not experience a population boom and increase in revenue due to cash shop items, at least not a single one that I can think of, so this is probably going to be a good thing. Also, f2p (conversion) is pretty much the way of the future for the MMO industry. The only MMOs out there that are subscription only are Eve, WoW, and Warhammer, and all of them are currently experiencing a (significant) loss of revenue/subscriptions, made even larger currently by the number of AAA MMOs that are f2p, b2p, or going f2p/b2p. With the economy as it is, fewer and fewer people have the spare money to pay a subscription to play a game, and until this changes, f2p is going to be the MMO standard (and again, f2p is not a bad thing, it just needs to be done correctly and balanced with a fair cash shop).
Since when is Tuesday a direction?
City Of Heroes (game shutdown shortly after), Mortal Online, Alganon, Vanguard (they actually merged servers) Fallen Earth, Face Of Mankind, Ryzom (the reset the servers shortly after) there's probably more, sorry to be pedantic its an affliction. But going F2P is not a certain windfall for all.

To throw in my 2 cents: I think Trion was good back when rift launched in like 2008 or w/e (don't quote me), but now Im a on the fence I am playing the wait and see now with AA. I Hope trion does it right since I am looking forward to AA. But seeing as how hurt their company is now I have no Idea where they are going with AA.
Heres hoping they don't mess it up
Screw leveling games, give me something with "End game" at the beginning of the game.
Trion is only the publisher of this game they are not the developers.
If this game does not do well it will not be only Trions fault depending on the issues at hand. If its a lack of proper localization then yes thats Trions fault, if its a lack of enjoyment that the game brings thats the fault of the developers XLGames fault.
But to say that Trion as a company isn't in a hard place is missing the signs. I know of 3 people that worked in the QA department at Trion as FULL TIME employees not temps in the QA department. They were all laid off. Other friend said 4/5 of his friends that left Sony to work for Trion all fell victim to being laid off as well. So it is in Trions best interest to localize this game to the best of their ability.
But it would be lying if everyone thought the western market has an overwhelming want for a game like this.
K-AA has been out for a little while now, you can even find youtube videos of the game.
One of the worst combat systems to date and that's on top of all the other things wrong with that game.
What's GW2 got to do with Archeage?
Are you saying I probably have reason to be worried?
I disagree on it ONLY being XLgames,Trion has already told XL they won't release without better character customization and as publisher they have full control of the game over here.XLgames does the actual work on the game, but Trion is in full control.Even after launch it is up to Trion to report bugs/glitches and feedback to XLgames.
I know from my experience playing ROM,i felt the publisher was the biggest problem "Frogster",not the game.I played that game for 6 months and yes there were some problems but in the end ,it was the publisher that drove me away not the game.
There should be yet another concern,WHO will run the forums?Again i use ROM as an example,Frogster was German but the forums and support was Asian. So does the contract include Trion running the forums or not?
Trion also has FULL control of what ever contract they signed with XLgames.Remember TRION took this game,so they SHOULD have invested some effort to find out if it is up to their standards.
I'll tell you that in my MANY years of online gaming,my triple A games have never failed me on launch,no que ues,no waiting .When i begin to see problems it is from outside publishers.
IMO this will release a triple A product,it will be quite playable for many types of gamer. Will it be fully adapted to North American gamer's ,i think probably not but will still be acceptable.Where i see problems is possibly on launch and in the feedback department.I do not expect a properly done Beta, just a bit of free game time then launch.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
I felt the same way after dealing with Defiance since it's release. I've moved on from that game but it left me having doubts about Trion that I didn't have before really. And with the new layoffs it is indeed a bit of a question mark now. However since they are only porting it here to the US I wouldn't be quite as concerned as if they were the actual developers of the game.
Called it long ago when I saw Korean videos of the game.
Its a linear themepark with Farmville and instanced sieges.
Might have a better themepark endgame than most given sieges and clan politics is the best type of endgame imo merging pve and pve
however, I stopped paying attention to the game after watching a Korean questhubbing for 15min and was called a troll for suggesting the game isn't a sandbox in any way.
given the hype being created for the game in the name of a sandbox, like wushu, its just going to disappoint people who know what a sandbox is and expect that.
So they're seriously holding back the release for this game just for a few sliders?
Then they are doomed.
Korean games dont do well in the west, and the fact its a strict PvP game will severely hurt its player base. Not saying i think the game will be bad, but expecting a big audience for it is just silly.

If WoW was released today even in its' entirety it would be f2p in 3 months.
Why is it still such a big deal?
I have to agree with you there. The issue is not with players like us however, it's with the masses they will want to attract to play their game. Trion is spreading themselves quite thin. We don't even get regular updates (or any) on End of Nations, a game they said they were working on how long ago (last blog post on EoN official site was 11.18.12 lol)?
We know what they did to their Rift staff and we know how poorly Defiance launched but is being worked on yadda yadda. I'm not sure they're entirely up for all the tasks they take on.
At the very least their marketing and/or PR departments are severely understaffed because not enough people care about these games right now or are even aware of them. ArcheAge doesn't even seem like a game coming out in 2014, but they want to have this out by the end of the year? I don't see it being popular without a little help from them.
