PS. don't know how the hype-meter works here, does it start from 10 or 5, thus the topic.
If I believed for one second that MMORPG.com took bribes, I would never ever log on here again. I don't believe that.
I don't think any serious game developer would pay people money to vote up their game, but it is possible they would suggest it, link to it, ask fans for it. I've seen that happen. But everyone does that, no?
First Fan votes. Just look the trailers for Black Desert. If it will hold up to the trailers? I doubt it somehow.. and the votes may go down over time. But for now it really looks rather good. But of how many votes is the rating based at the moment? 50?
The game has some amazing game play trailers, so I'd imagine the hype is legit. From what I've read it's supposed to be a full on Sandbox with amazing combat as opposed to a Hybrid with meh combat such as Archage is turning out to be (though to be fair I've only played about 8 hours of Archage when I visited a good friend of mine, and haven't had the opportunity to play any of Black Desert for obvious reasons).
Just watching the entirety of this video, and one might be hooked in all of the hype.
Due to frequent travel in my youth, English isn't something I consider my primary language (and thus I obtained quirky ways of writing). German and French were always easier for me despite my family being U.S. citizens for over a century. Spanish I learned as a requirement in school, Japanese and Korean I acquired for my youthful desire of anime and gaming (and also work now). I only debate in English to help me work with it (and limit things). In addition, I'm not smart enough to remain fluent in everything and typically need exposure to get in the groove of things again if I haven't heard it in a while. If you understand Mandarin, I know a little, but it has actually been a challenge and could use some help.
Also, I thoroughly enjoy debates and have accounts on over a dozen sites for this. If you wish to engage in such, please put effort in a post and provide sources -- I will then do the same with what I already wrote (if I didn't) as well as with my responses to your own. Expanding my information on a subject makes my stance either change or strengthen the next time I speak of it or write a thesis. Allow me to thank you sincerely for your time.
I think it's legitimate fan hype. From the little info we have so far this game looks pretty exciting and there's not any sort of PR going on. It's still being developed in Korea and hasn't even gone into Closed Beta yet, let alone found a Western publisher. I've heard a lot of people say they were excited about it and I haven't even had to introduce them to the game myself, they already found out about it themselves.
If 1 person votes it high, and no one else has rated it, then it will be high. It is typical that a newer mmo that releases a video or attracts some people shoots up....Then it usually gets the attention of people that don't view it so highly, and it goes down some. Hype meter isn't all the useful, to know if it will be a good game, but it lets you know what people are looking at a little.
I'm not sure if it relates to the hype meter, but about two months ago there was a very strong schill campaign going on for BD on these forums. That is, multiple different low post count people starting new threads, backing up each others posts, and raving about the game. Although what real details are there on BD yet, heh?
But still, it doesn't overly concern me. The people that build the games usually do really care about their product, they have families to feed, and they want to get the word out. And if a game actually is crap (or is just not attuned to your personal tastes), it's not that hard to figure out before any money is spent. Because there are loads of great posters on these forums who will quickly let you know what the true story is. If you only take a few extra minutes to keep on reading.
You could have read the FAQ about game ratings and gotten an accurate description in about 3 minutes

Housing doesn't seem to be all that bad, either. Interesting in placing tents out in the wilderness and making a campfire just to sit down next to.
