I bought GW2 when it first came out, and there are a lot of things I like about the game, but I was kind of bummed out about the crafting.
Or, to be more precise, the crafting itself was ok, the problem was it seemed like a waste of time to try to sell anything you made. There were always 1500 other people selling the same thing at cutthroat prices, so it was impossible to make any money.
Is it still like this, or have there been any improvements?

It's the same.
You CAN make money, but it's off very limited items. Like you mentioned, the problem of having one shared TP is the sheer number of competitors. People generally just use crafting as a way to level up. It's too bad that crafting in GW2 has been so marginalized. Other games do it so much better.
I was mentioning tonight that me getting all the crafting skills (Except tailoring, still short on tier 3 materials, just don't play that level range enough) was purely an OCD thing since I realized I was losing plenty of money on it when I could have just sold materials.
I then had several guild members point out how they made money with crafting, and the sorts of things they sold. Tailoring, jewelry and cooking.
Uhm. So I guess it can be done? It sounded too much like work though, and paying attention to what's in demand and what ingredients are cheap to get.
Though I guess 'too much like work' is theoretically a plus when it comes to crafting ? It's just all the work is in gauging prices and finding markets, so more the.... salesman part, rather than the actual crafting?
Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll check back again in the future.
I'm in a strange place, because I like crafting a lot, but also like decent graphics, so the hard-core crafting games like Wurm, A Tale in the Desert, etc. don't really do it for me.
Currently playing Rift, and while the crafting is fairly "vanilla" and nothing to write home about, I can sell what I make and make a profit doing so. Will keep looking around I guess.

Is there any scuttlebutt on upgradeing the crafting system ?

If you want something that is constantly profitable, invest in cooking.
You will need to play the margins with the rest. Very easy to make a profit, but you will need to buy/sell in bulk.
It also pays to purchase rare recipes and create rare item SKINS. I would recommend corrupted weapons if you want something to craft that is accessible and profitable.

I've come to accept that things in GW2 won't get much attention unless said things directly increases the cash shop revenue. (e.g. living story)

Its not the crafting thats broken, its the economy thats virtually non existant....
Its the worst economy in any MMO so far.
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
If you like crafting, you should definitely try vanguard. I think it has one of the most intriguing crafting systems in theme parks out there.
EQ got also interesting crafting, but that was a little bit overboard for me.
Actually, it is the crafting/gathering that is broken NOT the economy a lot of dumb people think it is the other way around. Everybody being able to do everything pretty much makes the market is flooded. And given how easy recipes can be acquired and things crafted or gather, it is even more of a reason. EvE has one economy and it doesn't seem to have the worst economy ever either (admittedly it is more complex that than but still proves my point). All the one TP system does is prevent scamming.
Either ways the problem is that everybody can do everything which is bad for any economy. There is no real need for anything since everybody can make everything except legendaries and precursors.
Since everyone can do everything..... as in all the crafting jobs... this is only one part of the failing Economy. I agree with you this ruins, the economy. On top of that the fact that resources on the BLTC almost go for free makes it even worse. And there being only one big market is another part of the economy being bad sub level 80.
There is one thing they did good at level 80, gold is very rare and everyone is always in need of it. and those that have more then they needed can and will exchange it for gems. This actually prevents the whole economy from falling down and ruining the game.
Crafting itselves is just an addon, and a timesink, its not really impoprtant for the econnomy.. in a world where no things are rare, and everything is quite archievable even for casual players.

Everybody is poor in Gw2 xD with only few being filthy rich. This seem to be a problem for all of you. If crafting breaks a game for you guys, go play Minecraft, seriously. I for one think that being able to craft anything is perfect. I've made money off of crafting. My account never runs less than 200g and I rarely play the market.
You all complain of drops yet, the BLTC is overflowed with all kind of "junk" but why do you deem that bad? I find it amazing. Every single time I create a new char to test out a profession I NEVER worry about gear. Why is that so bad in your lowlife eyes? Why is it so bad if a game doesn't ask you to be a zombie in order to progress? Get a girlfriend or something....
I for one love crafting my own gear out of the "junk" i gather along exping OR god forbid, just buy it off of the BLTC for low amount of gold. Why do you all seem happy with overinflated markets like in EVE online in which the devs constantly try to balance by increasing the ISK income which does only boost prices of anything. 2 years ago PLEX was worth only 250 - 300kk. Now it "magically" jumped to 500-600kk. That right there is inflation. I don't know why you are showing this market off. Not to mention that in eve as well you can be anyone and craft just about anything, if you have the skill...
The amount of effort you guys are willing to put in a game just keeps amazing me. Why crafting should be profitable? Would that imply that in game X every mechanic should make the player filthy rich? Really? I for one am happy that Gw2 is so "personal time friendly" and I am happy that the devs do not care for people like and whats even better is that most of you nolifers already left ^_^
Have fun in WoW with profitable crafting!
agreed..I love the discovery part of it
Agreed
Since when is Tuesday a direction?
