Players hype themselves, create unrealistic expectations by taking the developer words and warping them to suit their needs. talking how random game X is the one and how it will crush everybody. Inevitably when the game fails to meet the hype? The spend the next few months whinning and deafening all conversation on the forum with their QQ and blaming everyone but themselves for hyping the game. Then they pretend they don't understand why people would like the game that a few weeks ago, they were praising and calling it the next best thing, right after internet porn.
The sad thing is, they will claim game X was the last time they will fall for the hype, even though hype is generated from the players themselves as a response to marketing. The truth is the next game that peaks their interest? This whole cycle begins, no lessons learned.

I disagree with your thinking. Players want to believe a new MMO will be great and thus have hope. Hype more of less equals Hope and a belief that maybe it will live up their expectations. If it doesn't then we will move on til we find something that does. Just because you don't believe in a game doesn't make the rest of us wrong.
Just because I'm a gamer doesn't mean I drive a Honda.

Hype is one of the biggest problems facing MMORPGs recently; creating uneal expectations that it's not really possible to live up to.
Not something we should be promoting in any fashion....
Thank You. Top of the Hype Boards.. As it should be.
