So many flawed assumptions in this thread. You don't need a desktop PC unless you game on it really. Laptops can do every single task your PC can. Consoles can play pretty much all games. Tablets are far superior to desktops for browsing doing the casual stuff. I don't know many people who have a desktop PC at home nowadays. Most people own a smartphone/laptop and maybe a tablet.
Gaming PCs are just for people who are graphics freaks.
A lot of people don't even need a laptop for their every day personal computer use as they watch movies on Netflix/youtube/browse and play some casual games. A tablet does these things even better than laptops.

IF consoles had the games i like Then i would probably make the switch.
I don't care about these arguments weather a game is 30/60 fps on consoles because if the game is good then i don't care.
However, there is something to be said about resolution and texture details: I think the level of detail on consoles these days are acceptable in terms of having a good gaming experience and its not like the PC is pushing the boundaries of graphic detail anymore because basically all we get are the console left overs anyway.

Sold my ps4 and bought a gtx 970, ps4 couldnt handle ffxiv (open world bosses) lagging mad ((
Honestly:
It all depends on what you're into. There are a few serious simulations I play that Consoles or Tablets are not capable of running.
But if you're only into all the mainstream stuff, a Console will do you just fine. The new gen ones undeniably have some pretty sweet graphics.
Basically the only shitty thing left that remains with Consoles is all the proprietary exclusive bullshit.

I don't find PC exciting as a platform anymore.
