Actually if your a mmo the gamer. E.g. you play ONE game heavily your main mmo which you sub too, then buy the odd old game or indie game now and again ps4 will work out cheaper than a pc.
If your a "typical console gamer" that buys all the latest fps and action games, graphic heavy rpgs like dark souls and what have you, the pc will work out cheaper over a couple of years. Because pc games list much less than console games and you've no psn/xbl fees.
It all depends how many games you buy. If you buy a lot of games you save money building your own pc vs buying a console.

I used to think I'd always have a PC because i like playing MMOs. However, with all the recent developments in the last few days of big MMOs coming to consoles, the reasons for owning a gaming PC are becoming less and less. Don't get my wrong. I'll no doubt always have one, but the days of me spending thousands on gaming PCs for me are over. Just not worth it anymore.
For starters where do you spend thousands on computers and why? you can buy and build one for a ton less then the pre-built crap of the current market.
The main reason for myself staying with a PC is its way more versatile, it can be updated consoles can't, games often go on sale such as steam, gamersgate and a few others for super low. Most console games also are not the same as the PC version, they have gotten better about that but still some changes. Mouse and Keyboard is another major reason for some and myself. I already have them why should I buy more just so I can use it with a console...meaning why do I have to buy the "Xbox" adapter or there own versions whats wrong with the ones we already own. Also or lastly I pay for the internet why am I going to pay to use xbl or from some recent posts soon sony will ask for a fee as well. (no solid word from sony as I can tell yet so take it as you will)
maybe now PC-only MMOs can go back to being MMOs instead of online console games.
LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity. I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already

I've never understood why anyone with a PC, which most people do, would ever want a console. The PC does everything a console can do but better and does lots of other things a console can't do too. Just spend a little more on your PC or laptop instead of getting the cheapest available and that's all you'll ever need.
To fully update it to "modern" hardware would cost me about 700 dollars (new mobo, processor, video card).
I'm currently a couple generations behind - AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE and Radeon 6870 1GB
I could spend that 700 dollars and miss out on tons of console exclusives, since it seems like ALL the PC games are going console now.
Or I could spend 400$ on a new PS4 and be good to go for the next 7-8 years.
I am seriously amazed at what the PS3 and XBOX 360 are capable of pushing out (graphically) this late in their life cycle.
When I compare like Halo 3 to Halo 4 the difference is staggering.
If PS4 does blue tooth and/or has USB ports and is capable of using mouse/keyboard - there is no point to a gaming PC.
I have a smart phone, windows 8 tablet, and laptop through work.
Going to be REALLY hard for me to justify a new gaming PC anytime in the future...
I actually prefer playing games with a controller from my couch now anyway.
The days of hunching over a keyboard for hours on end, for me, are pretty much over.
Only reason I still have a gaming PC is MMOs - and now? Only two games I'm really waiting on are both coming to PS4.
They won't be the last.
This is about how I feel.. If you already have a top of the line dream machine, of course the consoles wouldn't appeal much.. But I am sitting with a Q9400, P5N-D board, and a Geforce GTX 660.. My rig is a "working" horse as of right now, but everyday it becomes more and more of an artifact. In order to upgrade my PC at all, I have to do the whole 9 yards.. Mobo all the way up to the Processor and even Ram and I am going to try and come up with a package that wouldn't cost any more than it would buying the PS4...
If I cannot match the prices,or get even remotely close I will have to suck it up and go the wave of the console.. For now..
The point of MMOs is that you play them over the years, and that they evolve. Take a look at any MMO that has lasted longer than 4 years. They all, at some point, expand their programming and code to take into account new things. For examplle, LOTRO started at Dx9, went to Dx10 and now Dx11. They also increased what the graphics engine could do. As technology changes, so does that specific MMO you are playing.
You cannot do that on a console. While they look almost equal to what a good (as in not great) PC can do right now, in 8 months time after that console is released the PC world will upgrade to the next new thing....then the next new thing in another 8 months, and so forth and so forth. Have fun trying to keep up with the ever evolving technology circus, because you are SOL with a console.
Consoles are great and playing games designed specifically for a console. They already know the limits of the machine. Here is another example. When EQ2 was released, SOE bet that the processors would stay single core but at higher speeds. They were wrong, multi core processors blasted EQ2 into oblivion and that game still suffers because of a bad design choice. That was a PC game, and it could not evolve with the times and was outdated a year or so after it was released.
If you are looking to play a game for three months, sure, a console is a great platform. But for a MMO? A game that people want to play for many years. Not a chance.
Oh, and I forgot....MODS. Go play Skyrim on a console. Well, you have to play it on XBOX because, well, go read up on what happened to the PS3 version. Then play Skyrim on a fully modded PC able to hand 100+ mods with a bunch of graphical enhancements.
There is no comparison. It takes exactly 1 second to see what good PCs are always superior to great consoles. Console player be like "wahhhhh, why does my Skyrim look so bland" PC gamer be like "hell ya sucka! Deal with it"
Originally posted by Rzep I am following E3 and the opposite feeling. What's the point of buying a next gen console? Graphically the games are nothing special, control wise it's the same pad or nothing bullshit, the games are for the most part multi platform, indie games will be released on PC, and all of the mmo's announced will or already are on PC already. These new consoles are just derpessing.
Is it still worth owning a PC? Yes, in my opinion it is. It will always be superior to consoles so long as you can afford to upgrade parts as they come out.
Not to say I don't enjoy the hell out of my consoles. I just turn to my PC first.
That does nothing for those of us who do not like controllers. I'll take a mouse and keyboard over a controller, no matter how "convenient" they try to make them. That alone is enough for me to pass up on any console. When and if they ever decide to make M+KB a standard part of the console, then I might consider it over the PC, but only if they offer high end versions with the same computing power and video processing I get with my high end PC.
I remember playing John Madden Football on the PC. in 89. I could only play the computer, but it was a great game. What made it great for me was being able to design my own play, make my own playbook, and even sim teams against each other. A year or so later madden was released on consoles. It was released without the ability to make plays though.
Even though the console game gave less in "depth," we know how this story ended.
Only because of Eve Online and wow. But soon all this will go in to oblivion with new games like destiny. Well consoles are future for gamers, time of pc is gone
Consoles are huge we all know that, but PC is better for certain things. Hopefully the kiddie console MMOs will piss off and we ll get the real MMOs again. PCs play FPS way better, and personally, it s dirt cheap now to upgrade a pc. I like consoles for it s purpose, but every time I buy one, after a few months it sits there gathering dust.

Yeah, to me it's either I buy both for like 1100-1300 dollars, or I just spend 400 bucks on a PS4 and abandon PC gaming.
I'm getting old, don't have much time for it anymore, and the wife likes when I play games in the living room / from the couch cause at least then we're spending time together instead of me being tucked away in the office...
I play RPGs, shooters, and MMOs. That's pretty much it. I have cravings for RTS every once in a while, but don't devote enough time to them to justify another big gaming PC purchase.
All the big RPGs and shooters and MMOs I want to play are coming to console (PS4) so why again should I buy a new PC?
Because I've been PC gaming for 25 years?
Not enough reason... logic trumps loyalty for me.
I already spend 9+ hours a day on a computer at work, it's nice to sit back on the couch and relax with a gamepad.
And besides, my current PC works - just isn't really cutting edge anymore. It'll last another couple of years at lower settings for the PC only games I just HAVE to play.
With both major consoles becoming computers(face it, it is the truth), The PC maintains more power than ever before. The consoles are still not upgradable. So like some of the previous posters have said, the graphics on the PS4 and the XBox One can already be beaten by computers like ours, and in less than a years time, by their launch day, PC's will have tech that far exceeds the capabilities of the Consoles. Sad to say, but this will be the final generation for Consoles. in 8 years time, It will be all computers, and you will just plug your gamepad into the the PC(like you can now) if you prefer a non keyboard and mouse setup.
Their lack of upgrade-ability is the reason console hardware is so cheap compared to PC's. But the downside is as PC's and games become more amazing, the console lags behind for 4-8 years until a new one comes and the cycle happens all over again. Consoles catch up to PC's for all of 2 months and then lag behind for years. PC's can reach Ultra Quality on games, Consoles get High at best.
These types of threads always pop up when new consoles are announced.
Consoles will NEVER be better than PCs. They will never play games better, they will never do PC related things better. The more these companies try to make GAME consoles more internet and social media friendly, the worse they will get...and they sure as hell are not good for surfing the internet with.

If the PS4 has a KBM set up that actually works good then great, those things worked like shit. I agree when someone said they won t make games optimized for KBM first anyways. Why not have a PC where they are.

Do consoles even have keyboards?
How do you communicate with other players if they don't? How do you communicate in zones if they don't?
If they do, then how are they any different than a PC with an Xbox controller attached?

Funny question.
My PC has been in the "Next Gen for 5 Years... it makes the new consoles look like toys - because that is all they are.
Foolish console people.
