Can I play it without owning warcraft 3 since it's a warcraft 3 mod. Because, I want to have a look at it but don't own warcraft 3.

    The original Dota?  I'm pretty sure you need Warcraft 3 for that.  However, league of legends is free to play, Heroes of Newerth is free to play, and Dota2 is very easy to obtain for free.

    Ok thanks. I might hunt around for a beta key to Dota 2 then since I don't want to buy wc3 just to have a look at a mod which I may or may not like.

    There's an automated bot that will give you 1 for free.

    Also if you go to gamefaqs or wherever you  will probably find somebody that will just give you one.

    Steam gives them away to Dota 2 players like candy, and if you give them away to people they give you another 5-10+ invites.
