Pricing?

So my understanding is that the game itself is $29.99....

I read on the wiki that,

The basic monthly cost for FFXIV is $12.99 per month, with a 30-day free trial upon activation. The basic cost includes one character and one retainer. Each additional character costs an additional $3 per month. Each additional retainer costs an additional $1 per month.

Question #1 - What is a retainer? Retainers are used for extra storage, and to sell your items for you when you're offline. Is that a bank or auction house person?

Question #2 - I have to pay an additional $3 bucks for every alternate character I make?

Please clarify. Sounds like the game doesn't need a cash shop if it is charging $3 bucks per character a month. ouch! So much for being an alt-a-holic. LOL

You can have all classes maxed out on a single character you dont need alts in FFXIV

When you create a character in FF14, that character can change jobs as often as you like, as many times as you like.  You started as a warrior but have decided you want to try magic?  Same character.  It even remembers the level your other class was and the level of all classes is independent.  A friends needs help doing a level 40 quest but you are on your level 14 red mage?  Switch to your level 60 thief and go backstab the heck out of some mobs.

The #1 reason for creating additional characters in FF11 was because players would run out of bag space.  In FF14, you have retainers that can hold and sell items for you.  Basically, you are paying $1 a month to have an NPC sell your stuff for you.  You get all the gil that NPC makes.

i think retainers are npcs that can set up a bazaar while your offline, im not sure

What about the official site's pricing plan?

Seems to me that the 2$ extra gives you 7 more chars per server up to 40 chars.

Is the site not up to date??

seems to the only reason anyone would want to make another character is just to be a different race.

Yes, a retainer is basically a merchant that you can access anywhere, even from your own inventory whenever you please, and it works like an auction house, you store as many items in it as you want and you set a price you want to sell them at, and people can look at the merchant board and buy items, just like a typical auction house.  Well worth the $1 extra per month, especially when its only 12.99 to begin with.

Also, you never need to ever make an alternate character.  Every single class and job in the entirety of the game is playable and attainable from only using 1 character.  You can learn every single skill just by changing at will to the other classes and leveling them up like you normally would like any other character/class.

The only thing, it is harder to level up those other classes because if you already did the basic quests in the zones, then you have to basically grind it out by doing the levequests, guildhests, hunters log, dungeons or any other means besides the basic storyline and side quests that you probably already completed with your first class.

Does race attributes make a difference on what class you play? For example, should I pick a race with high dex if my class will be a archer? How does that effect the character when I change classes?

So if I change classes or jobs on my one character... can I change appearance the character for each class/job as well, and change stats? TY

edited - because earlier info I gave was wrong.

I believe certain race sub choices do change some of the attributes in a very minor way.

Yep minor resistance variables based on elements.  The number variances is about 2-4 points depending on what race you pick.

i thought elemental resistance was depended on your birth date you choose

No.  Your appearance is only for one character.  That character can mix and match certain actions from other jobs.

Example Thaumaturg can level up a Conjurer and use the cure spell and protect in its rotation.  Spoiler- doing that is awesome.

That does not really matter in ARR. From what I've heard, the general consensus on changing it was because people would discriminate against different races playing specific jobs in FFXI, and would choose a person with the "right" combination of race and job over someone with the "wrong" combination, even if that person was better at playing that specific job. For example, people would pick a Galka (big, hulking race) Warrior for tanking over a Tarutaru (small race) Warrior because the Galka had better natural stats, no matter how good the Tarutaru was.

Also, about the prices. In ARR it will be $12.99 if you want 1 character per world, and $14.99 if you want 8 characters per world. I'm also pretty sure that they're getting rid of the extra retainer fee.

So you can have as many characters as you want for $12.99 as long as it's just 1 in each world/server. The Wiki didn't mention the $14.99 deal... it must be old information. Thank you all

This is why its tough finding info on FF :(  ... never know when someone is talking about v1.0 or just assuming its the same as v1.0.

No idea where any of this retainer stuff is coming from but for the standard price of P2P MMO you get a max 8 characters per server with a total of 40 allowable characters across however many servers you choose. Pretty much the same as other MMOs. There is a $12.99 price that limits you to 1 character per server up to a max of 8 characters for your entire account. Doesnt seem like much of a price drop given the huge limit but it makes more sense for FFXIV since one character can pretty much do everything.

there is one thing on this I dont know if it was said... so you choose a race then you choose a subrace in that which alters the stats, example for the cat ppl(sry way too early for me to spell it correctly =P) of the sun is for your melee, you get more str and dex and vit but the of the moon variety has more int, mind and piety so there is a small chance of you messing up your class but we are talking 2-3 stat points of each in difference.
