Thank you for posting this!  I mined up to level 8 last weekend and I am looking forward getting some good crafting time in this weekend.  This article makes me that much more excited about it.

Very interesting. Sounds like youll really need to love crafting/gathering as much as you like the usual classes to endure all that lol. Looking forward to it. Wish the article had some UI screens to help with the explanations, particularly the crafting ones.

Yeah, I agree Kayo, some UI screens would be nice.  NDA allows them to be released (I think) so I am not sure why they didn't release them.

I hope crafting is able to keep up with item drops and actually have meaning throughout the game.  I have read that by the time you unlock it at level 10, the items you are making are below your other classes level needs.  Of course helping out lower level guildies is an option, but I really like the idea of living off of what I have created.

I plan to put some serious time into Armorsmithing this weekend.

I do enjoy me some crafting and gathering at times.

    Nice article.

Due to frequent travel in my youth, English isn't something I consider my primary language (and thus I obtained quirky ways of writing).  German and French were always easier for me despite my family being U.S. citizens for over a century.  Spanish I learned as a requirement in school, Japanese and Korean I acquired for my youthful desire of anime and gaming (and also work now).  I only debate in English to help me work with it (and limit things).  In addition, I'm not smart enough to remain fluent in everything and typically need exposure to get in the groove of things again if I haven't heard it in a while.  If you understand Mandarin, I know a little, but it has actually been a challenge and could use some help.

Also, I thoroughly enjoy debates and have accounts on over a dozen sites for this.  If you wish to engage in such, please put effort in a post and provide sources -- I will then do the same with what I already wrote (if I didn't) as well as with my responses to your own.  Expanding my information on a subject makes my stance either change or strengthen the next time I speak of it or write a thesis.  Allow me to thank you sincerely for your time.

I actually like how this sounds a lot. The crafting/gathering might not be the best(I don't know yet) but I like how they wan't to separate them out. Most themeparks let you do everything, and I understand were this is great for mass appeal but by having people who only focus on gathering and crafting it makes things more interesting for this game. I don't have to bother with gathering or crafting anymore in my case since I only did it in other games "just because" now it seems I would have to go out of my way to be any good at it.

What do you mean by 'most themeparks let you do everything'? Most restrict you to choosing just one or two crafting professions. FFXIV is one of very few to allow players to level all classes on one character...

I still think Yoshi respects more of the damaging classes then actual jobs and gathering. Always has.

Of course he does he has stated to enjoy the full game people need to roll some type of battle class.  Honestly the attempt by Tanaka to include Gateherers and Crafting in the 1.0 main quest line absolutely ruined all of the gameplay portions.

It was a common complaint people had with the first release.  It is one thing to devote attention to crafting/gathering classes and is another to revere them and try to give them perfectly "equal treatment" in all areas of the game compared to battle classes.

By that I mean regular themeparks let you combat and craft/gather. And yes, I know you can do that as well in FF but by the looks of it it's a lot harder to be good at a combat job and a crafting/gathering job. Which I like, that means there will be folks dedicated to crafting/gathering. In most themepark mmos there aren't dedicated crafters/gatherers because everyone can achieve it easily.

Ah fair point, yes, we'll likely see more dedicated crafters which should also mean more rewarding crafting in terms of a market for selling crafted goods. Given that crafters are required in the materia cycle for endgame gear they'll be in high demand.
