Some quick, basic info about Hex:Shards of Fate

Finally!  I asked for a Hex forum a few weeks ago and it looks theres enough interest to have one.  This is going to be mostly a copy paste from a post I made awhile ago about Hex. Partially because theres no real new info to share but primarily because I'm lazy.  http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/post/5772310#5772310

The basics: "HEX combines the amazing community and roleplaying aspects of a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMO) with the compelling collectible and strategic gameplay of a Trading Card Game (TCG) to create an entirely new category of a game, the MMO/TCG."  http://hextcg.com/game/overview/

It had a very successful Kickstarter campaign, receiving $2.5 million when the original goal was only $300k.  Obviously theres a market for this type of game. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cze/hex-mmo-trading-card-game

Its a TCG game, like Magic the Gathering, that is online and digital only.  It has different types of pvp formats (drafts, pre-made decks, guild tournaments etc), many of which will be familiar to those that have been played TCGs.  It also has a pve side where you use the TCG style combat in dungeons and raids.  It also has loot, levels, an auction house, guilds and other features that are like other MMOs and add an rpg element to the TCG.

It is a f2p game and I know what that means to a lot of people.  However, the pve side is completely 100% free and you get a free starter deck in the beginning that you can use in pvp or pve.  No costs involved whatsoever aside from your time.  Where they will make their money is from booster decks ($2 each) and entry fees into the pvp tournaments that will have prizes.  Theoretically, you could use the items you earn through pve to acquire pvp cards (pve only cards can't be used in pvp, pvp cards can be used anywhere) by trading them with other players.  This is a TCG, so there could be an element of "p2w" in pvp but it doesn't look like it will have much of an impact.  There will be a VIP sub type program for $4 a month, which gives you one booster pack per week, basically reducing the cost of a booster pack from $2 to $1, and access to a special tournament/draw.

I'm very excited for Hex not only for the standard TCG parts of the game but because it really does seem to be bringing something new and unique to MMOs.  If its as good as it looks to be, then I can picture Hex really catching on since WotC really seem to not give two shits about their online games.  MODO has an interface and UI that is, at best, hot garbage while Duels of the Plainwalker doesn't let you build decks or enter tournaments and hardly anyone plays multiplayer.  Why they didn't combine the two of them into one game is beyond me.

Angry Joe has a nice lengthy interview with Corey Jones, President & CCO of Cryptozoic, that really lays out what Hex will, hopefully, be like.

Is a man not entitled to the herp of his derp?

Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.

I started a thread a few weeks ago on the Hextcg forums that has a list of all the videos, or blog interviews I have found with the developers, and their CCO Cory Jones talking personally about the game, as well as a couple of sample gamecasts.  These show the elements of the game, but more importantly the development already invested in it and the passion with which the Cryptozoic team is developing this.  Highly recommended viewing.

The Hex community is rapidly growing as well and here is a link to a list of a number of the fansites, blogs, youtube channels devoting their time and energy to Hex.

    Finally.

Take ZAT wizards of the coast. You have milked your customers for the last time!

I am 100% backing this one, might be the very first mmo I'll spend cash for something other than subscription on, and all of this just because "WotC, take your pathetic duels of the planeswalkers and greedy policy and show them both around your large intestine!" :)

Nice! Just pledged the Slacker Backer.

Can't wait for Alpha! Have been an avid Magic player during my School period back in the 90's during the golden years.

This is going to be interesting for sure! :-)
