Longest lasting mmorpg ever?

EgoldEgold Member Posts: 74

alright since i have played a few mmorpgs already, i am looking for one that will last the longest out of all the games currently going. Most preferably a fantasy game. Also, this is just out of curiosity of what people think, so im setting up a poll. ::::31::

please post which mmorpg you think will last!

Asheron's Call without a doubt. The level cap is 126, but you can continue raising your skills long after that cap has been reached. It takes years to max out all skills. The game is a bit old, but it has aged like a fine wine. It has the most quests, and the most interesting quests I've seen in a MMORPG. The expansion pack comes out on July 18, but you can buy a downloadable copy at the Turbine store. It comes with a free month when you pay the fee.

If you have the time and energy, EverQuest would be the longest lasting of them all. To experience even 50% of the game's raid content would take you months alone.

Seems pretty clear to me that all games you mentioned will last. Personally if i had to pick, i'd say Guild Wars will dlast shortest. I think it will be a great hype, but since its not really a mmorpg, i think it will have a short intense life.

I think NCsoft is actually counting on it, because they dont ask for a subscription, but rather try to get as many people to buy it initially.

But i think all these games will last at least 3/4 years.

You left off the game that has lasted longer than any other so far and that is Ultima Online. It has been going for almost 8 years now and doesn't appear to be shutting the doors anytime soon.

Tranquility, you meant the games would last 3 to 4 years right?

Keep in mind that Everquest is celebrating its 6 year anniversary in June.

It depend what is your gameplay and what you enjoy in a game.

If all that matter to you is a great combat mechanic and you dont mind doing a few toons to max level, then CoH clearly outmatch the others in longevity...but as soon as you want something outside of the combat mechanic, I will express doubts about you lasting interest in CoH.

If all matter to you is to reach max level once, then none of those will last long, but EQ will prolly last longer then the others...however if you take into account that in some games you can only start some class after reaching max level with another, then CoH will take longest to reach max level on a PB or Shades(would take me 3 months to reach 50 twice and playing quite maddly without PL).

If solo is what matter to you, CoH is the best choice, WoW is a decent second choice I assume(althought I hate it MUCH).

If you are a casual and you want a casual friendly game even if it is at the expense of the others players, then WoW is prolly the best game for you and will prolly last longer.

EQlive's numbers and SOE support at dwindling. I'd say dark age of camelot. They are upgrading the graphics to EQII quality for free and after 5 years, are still releasing expansion packs and releasing updates weekly.

DAoC has only been out about 3 years... not even close to 5.

EDIT: But yes, I also think it will last the longest of those games.

I agree, DAoC will last the longest seening as how they are always adding positive things to a game that has limitless potentiat for good upgrades.

Also i remember reading one of the devs at mythic saying they chose that engine for daoc simply because the upgrade abilities it has. They proved that in the latest expansion. Instaced dungeons... RvR missions... Tower Razing... casual server that will modify the way you get xp comming soon... and the /level, which now that i think about it, is similar like guild wars option to create eather a pvp only player or a regualar avatar. only diff is the daoc one you can make a 20 for everything and not just pvp.

I think Guild Wars will last the shortest because the game doesnt seem to have much depth,  so they will probably come out with Guild Wars 2 within a year or two.

THen I think Eve Online will be the next to go.  The playerbase is not going to grow much bigger because of how hard it is for new players.  Alot of people in Eve have Maxed out character,  and EVe does not have a level cap.  Veteran players get more richer and more powerful and have years of advnantages over the new player.  Any sane person would not join Eve at this point in time unless you want to be target practice or sit next to the cops and show off your newbie ship which isnt very fun.

My vote went for Everquest because it was the first MMO with nice graphics.  It has already been around for almost 10 years.

A game like WoW is better then EQ but WoW will have to adapt its game because of all the competition,  advances in technology etc.  All EQ had to do was sit on its behind for those 10 years.

So my vote is for Everquest.  I dont think any other MMO will last longer then EQ has (10 years).

I never remember hearing that the game has forced PvP.

  • r1tualr1tual Member Posts: 559

I never remembered the game having anything to do for newbies other then empire mining or running agent missions in safe space(at least thats all you can do without losing the game).

Oh or maybe you can wage war on other newbie corps.  How fun when the majority of the game now is player owned outposts,  and fighting for control of 0.0.

And even if you join a powerful corporation,  you are not going to be a productive member.

I sold my Eve account to buy a new computer.  I played Eve from day 1 and I had a very good character.  I would not rejoin Eve for anything less then my old character who probably has 15 million skill points.  That is about 2 years I would be behind to the vet's.  That isnt any fun.

Now if EVe Online 2 comes out.  Im definatly there.

Ultima Online. I know I could go back to that game and still enjoy as much as I did then. Also still my favorite mmorpg.

Wow 2 pages before somoene points out that UO hits 10 years next year and has still got a few years left in it yet. None of the games in that list will come close to lasting 12+ years....

First it depends what you classify as an "MMO".  Text-based muds have been around since 1978 and many of them are still running today.  They are mutliplayer persistent-state worlds which would fit literal definition of an MMO.  If you want to add "graphical" to your description, then the earliest graphical MMOs were ones such as the original neverwinter nights on AOL back in the early 1990s.  Those have all died.

The first of the "modern, graphical MMOs" were The Realm Online and Meridian 59 which both launched in December 1996.  Both of them have 8+ years under their belts and are still going.  The first large commercial MMO -- by large i mean with more than 100,000 subscribers -- is UO.  UO launched in September 1997 and still has roughly 200,000 subscribers.  As long as these first three keep going, it's going to be really hard (read: impossible) for newer MMOs to catch up.

Ultima Online all the way! All these years and it's still here. To this day NO published MMOG has come close to capturing the essance the UO had and has.

Dont forget NexusTK, AOL NWN, Dark Sun Online etc. etc.

Ultima Online is relatively new mmorpg and low populated in compare with Lineage 1 (released 1997 too).
