All I can say is this:

Lol at the massive WoW-inspired shoulder armor on almost everyone in Gabor Szkisza's art.

The original just has something that wasn't entirely captured in the reinterpretation.

ultimately this is a role playing game and you should be able to play the role that you want to play.  Without necessarily having to recreate another character. My opinion. And I think that there's a lot of ways we can go down those paths so that they are really interesting and very cool for the players. And we will be pushing that a lot farther."

multi-roles could be similar to DCUO -- who knows?

A player will always be in a Role, the default and starting Role being Damage. The other Roles are Tank, Healer, and Controller, available to players with certain powers at level 10 and above.

In honor of EverQuest Next's August 2, 2013, worldwide debut, fantasy artist Gabor Szkiszai has reinterpreted Keith Parkinson's original EverQuest masterpiece. You can download exclusive EverQuest Next wallpapers, by joining our social networks.

That should answer all your questions

Honestly though, I kind of feel like the disconnect between the modern interpretation and the original runs oddly parallel to the disconnect between modern MMO's and the original greats.

Anyone else get the same feeling?

I liked the original picture MUCH better.  The new one looks like WOW graphics, while the original looked much more realistic.

Also it seems odd that, unlike the original picture, no characters are actually depicted as pure magic users...that is, all characters now have weapons and are not shown as casting spells.

No, when I look at the picture I get the feeling that I'm going to get to experience EQ again, but it's not going to be EQ1.3 or EQ2.4

It's going to feel familiar, with great throw backs and nostalgia moments, but it's not going to be the exact same experience I had back in 1999.  It's going to be new, and much better.

Probably the best MMORPG ever made and will set the bar for all other MMORPGs to follow.

Every MMORPG after EQN is going to be an "EQN clone".

I find it absolutely hilarious that people are up in arms that the wallpaper is the new artwork, supposedly.

Just like the character models looked the exact same on the box art for the original game, right?? And all of the expansions??

Come on people, pull your heads out of your rears and stop picking apart things just to have something to complain about. It's a painting, and really well done at that. It's meant to capture the spirit of the game and make it pop, not be an indication of the actual in game art.

Another example: Call of Duty. They have something that looks as if it is a picture of a live person - they even had live people in the commercial - but the graphics definitely don't look that real.

    It's called marketing.

Why's that?  You don't believe that a game can do so well that it's copied countless times afterwards?  Ya because that NEVER happens lol.

Also, the saying is "Rein* yourself in".  Rain is a word that describes the weather phenomenon of precipitation.

This is the first crack in the facade for EQ Next, up to now they said all the right things.  But big weapons, huge shoulder pads, cartoony art style.....it's all what has been wrong for the past 7 years in this genre.

They should have known better.  This wallpaper project should have never seen the light of day.  Pay the artists, and just chalk it up as a bad idea.

Hopefully the artwork in this awful wallpaper does not reflect the actual in game stuff.....but then again, this is SOE.  For everything great thing you can say about them, you also say the opposite.

EQ Next has a 50/50 chance of either incredible, game and genre changing success OR total abysmal failure on an epic level.

I think the social media sites and several fans sites say otherwise.  This is getting rave reviews all across the fan spectrum and even the majority here are fine with it.

This thread and the others like it are the direct result of what a lack of information for years will do.  When you start to feed them crumbs (the tweets) and then this piece of artwork it all gets blown out of proportion.  Well, hopefully its all out of proportion and all the rumor mongers and fanatics aren't correct.

Why do you want an alternate universe to be exactly the same as the current established universe?

Do you not enjoy new stories and ideas?

You know, for the Star Trek reboots, they could have just taken the original movies, changed nothing about the characters, stories or anything in between and shot them scene for scene, line for line with new actors and new visual effects.

I take it that's the kind of "reboots" you prefer?  Maybe the Dark Knight movie series should have just been a re-shooting of the original batman TV show?

Joker: [laughing] Have a SNEEZE on me, Batman!

[Joker administers sneezing powder upon Batman, which has no effect]

Batman: No use, Joker! I knew you'd employ your sneezing powder, so I took an Anti-Allergy Pill! Instead of a SNEEZE, I've caught YOU, COLD!

    Robin: Holy atomic pile, Batman!

Starting at 41:10 mark.  it's pretty obvious EQN will allow some sort of system to give the player the option to play any role.

His answer to the question of one character being able to level multiple classes like in the Final Fantasy mmo isn't really answering the question. He answers why one character isn't made to have all class abilities at once. He states that you have to have multiple characters for different classes to promote group play. I would think that the FF system would promote it even better. It would allow for anyone to change into the class they needed for the group they wanted to join.

Maybe he just doesn't want to admit that they didn't think of it or that their current 'engine' doesn't support it....

Wow you read into something so much you actually miss the statement made which was:  Ummmm I wonder why no one does that, then looks up and to the left in a coyishly sheepely grin.

Also taking a closer look at the picture, that little guy in the middle does look like a revised Ratonga.

He's wearing some skull-helmet and they made their hands/feet more animal like.  Like it has more rat like leg-bones and the hands are less human in shape, but it looks a lot like a ratonga.

I could easily be the opposite of what TES did with the Argonians and the Khajiit.

In Marrowind the animal races had much more animal-like legs, but they made them more humanoid in TES IV and V.

So they might have tried to make the Ratonga's more unique looking in EQN.

I hope the rat lovers get an EQN rat.  I remember lots of people loved the Rats, Cats and Iksar in EQ2! :P

We're not all crotchity! Don't let the few that are give you the impression we're all like that.  EQ still has one of the best communities on the planet to this day.  You'll never find a group of friendlier people than if you log into EQ today and tell everyone you're a new person looking to get started in norrath.

Perhaps the gods haven't chosen what they will stand for or asked their worshipers to connect them to. The gods are young and war is sweeping through universe for these young Deities.

Could be like something out of The Rift War Saga, war rages across the heavens and old powers are being replaced with these new upstart gods.

The artist probably never played any EQ game and isn't aware of any lore.

Although you have to wonder how this stuff made it past QA.

Your statement is what makes more sense to me. Nothing more to be "read between lines" in this picture.

Of course, but changing the "face" of EQ will not sit well with fans. =p
He did a pretty good job making a modern rendition of the picture, using his own style, and not copying it stroke for stroke. It's familiar, but new.  Exactly what they said EQN was going to be.  It's going to feel like Norrath, but it's not the same place as EQ and EQ2.
I get it, but that doesn't mean it won't annoy many people, only because it's FV.
That's understandable.  People on here are worried about how big the game's shoulder pads are going to be, so nothing surprises me.

So long as a thing exists, it'll be sure to piss someone off.

and copying WoW's armour styles is probably a sure way to maximise the number of 'someones' that are.

and by copying i mean the huge shoulder pads, and then there is the bow she is holding itself, now that looked very familiar. As someone who has a huntard in 'that' game of course i would recognise it image

    http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/952/view/forums/thread/389635/page/23

Looks to me more like they're copying Warhammer 40k from 1987 than WoW.  Pretty sure EQN is going to be a WH40k/Record of Lodoss war clone now.

You honestly think they would look to some 1987 War 40k style of art rather than the MMO's sitting right in front of them?
