Chrono Trigger for SNES. Best game ever made?

GhavriggGhavrigg Member RarePosts: 1,308

Just wondering everyone's thoughts on this. Personally, I consider Chrono Trigger for the SNES to the best game ever made. I'm talking from all genre's I've ever played.

I've spent countless hours on this game as a kid, played through it a good 10-15 times, and I still don't know everything about this game. I've not finished the game the EVERY ending yet, I haven't acquired every item, and there's a chance I might have missed some story elements, as well.

I've recently started playing it again on an SNES emulator, and it's the most fun I've had gaming in a LONG time. They don't hold your hand through everything; you actually need to talk to NPC's to figure out where you're going, link  a lot of NPC's words throughout different time periods to complete optional objectives (and there are A LOT of optional objectives), and the music and atmosphere are better than any game I've ever played (though some have come close over the years, such as FF7 and Grandia 1 and 2).

The combat seemed ahead of its time, making you choose to either attack with one characters abilities, or use Dual, or even Triple techs with two or all characters in one turn. Everything you do  has its ups and downs, whether using a Dual or Triple Tech will hinder your ability to heal your party at crucial situations, or even just not wearing certain gear for the right situation (such as, say, if you're fighting a certain boss that kills the fire and shadow attacks for massive damage, there is gear available to cut that damage in 1/2 that may seem weaker than your general gear otherwise).

I'm trying to think whether at this point in time if the story would be considered cliché by people who have never played it up until this point or not. It still seems pretty unique even to this day. It's very intense and emotional at times, and sometimes just shocked the hell out of me (which I won't spoil anything here for those who haven't tried it.)

Anyway, I hope everything here made sense. I've just been excited as I've been playing this game again, both for the fun factor and the nostalgia. I'd recommend it to anyone who's currently in between MMO's or whatever.

If you wanna play it, you can download the SNES9X emulator and the ROM at... I think I got it at Emu Paradise or some shit via google.

And that's that. Later guys. :D

I'd like to say no, because surely there have been better games, right? I can't particularly think of one at the moment, though.

I'd probably give you "best JRPG ever made" at least.

Yeah, my nostalgia goggles are thick with this one, no worries, guys. I just feel it personally, and wanted to create a thread about it. I mean, there are no games really that I feel this strongly about now, let alone after 15+ years.
  • I really liked the game and can definitely see it as a game some might have as their favourite game. For me I don't think it's on my top 10 best games, though. But it's really awesome.

I didn't play it when it was first out, only years later on an emulator, and I never made it all the way through.  I would have probably felt the same as you had I played the original.  I have the same issue with FFVI.  I think it was the best RPG ever and it might be because of nostalgia.  Though only a couple years later, FFVII came out and I still think it's overrated, so who knows?

Best jrpg for me is panzer dragoon saga (and yes I own the actual discs hehe)

Chrono Trigger was groundbreaking in many respects; an epic and memorable experience with a story-line I really cared about and characters I became emotionally invested in, but it's not the best game ever made.

Chrono Cross, the sequel for playstation 1, is also very well done.

edit: what about titles like Myst, Super Mario Bros, Centipede, Virtua Fighter...

"best game ever made" is just way too broad, and implies too much: if you were to ask me what the best game ever is, I'd probably answer something like Go, but was this game even "made"?  Or did it just... (wait for it)... emerge.

If you were to ask me what the top four JRPGs are, I'd say Final Fantasy 7, Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy 3, Chrono Trigger.

Yeah, it's partially because I grew up with it, and my cousin and I loved it and played it for a LONG time and talked about it a lot trying to figure out all the secrets and other crap, as well as since we were always at this camp ground playing it during the summer, which we never go to anymore. FFVI was another game that I played a lot of, but never got totally into it. I played it a lot, but the farther in I got, the more I just wanted to finish it up and get it over with, especially since no one else I knew then or even now seemed to enjoy it at all.

Panzer Dragoon wasn't too bad, but it was a quick get in and get out sorta game for me.

It's kinda funny how much outside influences are taken into account when it comes to what your "favorite game" is. At least in my case.

Certainly a good game but it was just a marketing success and that led to it being overrated. Still VERY good. but not the best by a long shot.

Xenogears is my all time favorite game, but chrono trigger is up there with it too including final fantasy 6/7 and the Metal Gear series.

Im very biased towards Chrono Trigger as it was a big game and part of my growing up. Its #3 on my all-time list behind A Link to the Past and Final Fantasy 7. Even Ocarina of Time could push Chrono Trigger to #4.

For my money LttP was the best game ever made.

Chrono Trigger did however have the best music of any game ive ever played.

Honorable mention for my #5 game of all time - Sword of Vermillion. Loved it loved it loved it.

Yes ocarina is way up there on the best ever list. The absolute best is a tough choice. For me, the best game has to be perfect. Its hard because even the most enjoyable games have at least one not so hot aspect. The closest to a perfect video game for me would probably be Shenmue or possibly Super Metroid.

I rate Chrono Trigger in my top 5. I owned the SNES version, and currently have the DS version. I would say it was the best SNES JRPG, with Link to the Past, FFVI and Secret of Mana being right up there as well. For me, Chrono Trigger hit a mark that neared perfection. Additionally, the new game+ feature was something I had dreamed about as a kid. I just wish that the game would have scaled in difficulty as you played through each time.

I still remember the day that Chrono Trigger came out. I was working at a local video game shop, and I had heard nothing about it previously. I opened up our delivery and saw 5 copies of CT in the box. I then saw the Square name on the box and I was like, "How in the hell did I not hear of this". Called my boss and told him that I am selling myself a copy (we weren't allowed to handle our own transactions normally), he laughed and said it was fine.

A few months down the road, I was sick from school for about a week, and played through the game twice during the week. It's probably the one game I have played through the most.

I still have the original disc.  I guess I could figure out how emulators work and all that, but it sort of boggles me.  My PS1 doesn't work well anymore.  It just fritzes out when it feels like it.

Oh and Super Metroid was nearly perfect.  It flowed, had smooth responsive controls, and really no glitches that I can think of.

There are glitches in super metroid. But they are hard to pull off and a lot of fun if you do.. Not like these current console game glitches which are glaringly in your face and hurt your experience.

Noone can say whether your favorite game of all time is the, 'best', or not. It's a highly subjective topic, it maybe to you so fair enough. Personally it might be in my top 20, but not top 10.

In that vein I always had fonder memories of Secret of Mana, my buddy and I were obsessed with that game till we completed it :D

This looks like a job for....The Riviera Kid!

Either way, whether or not you guys thinking Chrono Trigger is the best, you're still naming off my favorite games in general. Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Breath of Fire 2, Xenogears, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past/Ocarina of Time, etc.

I think I'll play them all over the next while. lol

If you're gonna play some 16 bit jrpgs, you should add phantasy star 4 to the list. One of the best in that genre.

Nah, it's not even the best in the genre for me. That would be Suikoden 2, criminally overlooked game at the time because PS1 was such a powerhouse when it came to JRPGs and big developers like Square pumped hits after hits.

    OMG... Secret of Mana....

Secret of Mana and Seiken Densetsu 3 (via emulator, since not released in NA, as far as I know) are both amazing games as well.

Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana are the games I played the most during my childhood, for sure, followed closely by Breath of Fire 2. I don't know how SoM slipped my mind. I still like Chrono Trigger more, though. Still, the music and atmosphere of Secret of Mana are on par with it, as well as the combat system.

Still, CT is gonna stay as my favorite, simply because I'm playing it now and having an amazing time doing it, and played it more than any other game made.

But I can understand why others would  be hesitant to say it's the best ever, for sure.

Favorite game of all time? Its in the top ten. Maybe 15. I would put games like A Link to the Past, Breath of Fire, Legend Of Mana, Lunar Silver Star Story, Legend of Dragoon, Crystals, Chrono Cross, FF 7 and a few i cant think of right now ahead of Chrono Trigger.

    Adding Valkyrie Profile

The suikoden games in general were amazing, though they dropped off after 3 for me. They were great games, though I pretty much played all but the first only one time.

The first, though, when I first got a PS1, was nearly as iconic as FF7 to me. The first time I played PS1, I rented the console from a store, and played FF7, but once I owned the system and branched out, I quickly picked up Suikoden and played through it, and it's definitely another game with a unique feel to it that, when thinking back is amazing, but I dont' know if I could get into it again now.

Suikoden 2 continued that feeling with better graphics almost to a T. Man, the thoughts this thread are bringing up is making me wanna play too many games.

I have played PS4, and I did think it was great, but I haven't really wanted to play through it a second time. Then again, I was never a major Sega Genesis fan from the start.

Shining Force 1 and 2 were probably my favorite SRPG's, though, and they were on the Genesis.
