Multiboxing is against the spirit of the game, and the people who do it are typically the kind that will trample over immersion at every opportunity to maximize their progress.
That said, there's really not much game companies can do about it.
no one really makes a fair claim as to how it has impacted them
I am/was a multiboxer in Everquest. I used to play 5 characters. Why not 6?
Because I WANTED someone to join me.
You asked for a reason yes?
I will ask you, do you think everyone enjoys joining a group where 5 players are being controlled by 1 person?
I don't always know if characters are boxed, and I do not find it particularly fun if a person is so busy controlling multiple characters they don't have any time to chat.
I often got invited in a group in Everquest, only to find out an hour later that the reason people aren't chatting much is because they are multiboxing. And they don't tell anyone, since they know people won't join if they do.
Not very honest, not very fun, and multiboxing impacted me.
That is one reason, I think a valid reason. There are more reasons, but people quickly dismiss them as not important, they can be important, multiboxers change how the community works, often in a negative way.

You know.. picking WoW as excample..
I rather group with a Multi-boxer when running LFD/LFR , they certainly wont be any less social then the average random player, even if the Multi-boxer isnt very social atleast they are coordinated.
If a game is so easily multiboxed then it surely it should lose players to it. I won't be playing it for sure if that is the case. On the other hand if the multiboxer does group better than not getting a group at all I guess. I am unsure now.
I voted to allow it, we did it regularly in DAOC and EVE and I have no issue with it.
Honestly did not know that it was still an issue that concerned people.
Haven't heard it as a grump in a lotta years.
Its just another scapegoat. Heck they even made a Rift specivic post about the very same topic, funny enough just as Always the youtube linked there showed the very same thing as the one they linked in this thread, a Multi-box group (5players) owning people that drip in 1-2 players at the time and they get owned.
Without multi-boxing, FFXI's population would have quickly plummeted a few years after WoW's release. I honestly didn't know a player that didn't have at least 2 accounts to either power-level with or to just be able to low man content when no one else was on.
At the same time, to efficiently multi-box, you're required to use programs that should be illegal while playing. This is the aspect that should be looked at and curtailed. Let the multi-boxers do their thing, if they can do it without the use of automated programs.
I am a huge multi-botter in eq with me often running 6 char but i voted no. I started running bots in about 2008 when most of the players i knew were gone or because when i played on usa servers there wasn't many on when i was exping and at top lvl its next to impossible to solo good exp.
I like the challenge that i get from soloing hard group content with my bots but there is nothing like being part of a friendly group in EQ. If anybody in that group is botting they are usely too busy to talk or have fun and when i am botting i have no where as mush fun as i do if i leave my bots at home.
On the list of things that need consideration in an MMO, multiboxing should not even be considered. How are you going to enforce it? Would a company really want to enforce it? (A person paying for 2 accounts, thats more money for them)
Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore) Now Playing: N/A Worst MMO: FFXIV Favorite MMO: FFXI
I'm all about multi-boxing.. I have 2 SoE accounts and I 2 boxed Eq1 and Eq2.. With all my crafting professions I needed 10 characters 9 to tradeskill and 1 to sell full time.. I have every crafter maxed out at 90 and I have the sub professions maxed as well.. I have 5 toons on one account and I have 5 on the other.. this was helpful when I needed to trade stuff from toon to toon either for myself or my guildees.. Plus I needed the space for my stupid massive inventory lol.. I'm a pack rat so I still have stuff that was around from launch for memory.. But I have my healers/support on one account and I have Warriors and Rouges on my other so I can Tank and Heal myself at the same time.. I use my mouse to tank and move on my right hand.. on my left hand I heal using the numbers/action bars.. its really fluid in EQ.. I also learned how to master dual crafting two toons at once.. Was really helpful as well.. I also maxed out all my tradeskills in RIft also.. But IMO rifts crafting is bland.. like total yuk.. Even Aion was bad.. and WAR online even more yuk... all these new MMO's coming out now a days feels incomplete to me as I play them.. Like yes this game is new and its got updated and amazing mechanics but lots of games on the market today lack the DEPTH that I desire that older MMO's had.. Games today It almost makes no sense to 2 box because you can max everything out on the game easy on one account.. there is almost no need to 2 box now a days other than to run a healbot behind you.. I Never played WoW... But I spent ALOT of time on EQ 1 and 2.. and those games today have so much DEPTH now that appeals to older school players ( The players that had to ENDURE the pain and torture and accomplished shit against the odds ) I mean people complain stupid shit now.. example mob spawn timers lol.. like 10 mins is tooooo long to wait!!! Shit we had to wait weeks and months to wait on some of our EQ1 spwans.. this was a little better in EQ 2.. but you get there and Magically the Mob spawns and boom you get KS'ed buy some dude who don't even need the mob!!!!.. We where the Pioneers of MMO's at their worst growing into what we have today.. What I guess I miss is that sense of accomplishment of things such as the First Cleric EPIC, or getting that Fungi Tunic to drop off the King... But I will 2 box if the situation is right in EQN.. if its more washed down like todays MMO's probably not.. we will see what we are dealing with here more in a couple weeks...
If a game requires you to multibox or if multiboxing simplifies your game ... that is the definition of bad game design. I don't know what you all love so much about such game and spam this website about EQN 24/7 with mindless topics like "Do you want this in EQN" or "do you want that in EQN"
Stop it ... nobody cares. At least nobody that can do something about it
At the same time, to efficiently multi-box, you're required to use programs that should be illegal while playing.
Namely ISBoxer / Innerspace, which almost all multiboxers use, in EQ, WoW, Rift, you name it, they use ISBoxer.
Which is a hack tool.

i have dual and triple boxed in EQ1, EQ2, WOW
i never used any software -- i did use at least 2 keyboards and 2 monitors tho
with the introduction of projection keyboards and touchscreen technology (or even a modified keyboard) you can also do it quite easely without 3th party software , which is 100% legal.

Macroquest is a hack, yes, because it allows you to do things that others cannot.
ISBoxer and Innerspace are NOT hacks. They do NOT allow you to do anything that others cannot. Everything requires a keystroke. Nothing is automated. It is NOT a botting program. If it was a hack, then why is it allowed in most top AAA games? Go look it up before spreading more lies.

Flat out wrong.
ISBoxer is a hack tool, it allows you to stick onto mobs, which means it's reading game data and injecting commands, which is hacking. ISBoxer actively searches within the game data to find the coordinates of mobs, and it injects a stick command, that is hacking.
Innerspace is also a hack tool since it allows you to run game scripts within the game code.
I have fond memories of multi boxing war, ench and rogue whilst a friend boxed cleric , monk and wizard....had various alts we could swap in for different classes needed....we managed to farm alot of places back in SoV doing HoT or PoG and inviting random people to come for a chance to get some gear.
This would mean things like /follow and /stick would not make the game. and combat would be truely based on reactions and positioning..
Disallowing /follow won't stop them. All the multiboxing software already included it, they include /stick-to-mob too.
Action combat would stop them, but this hurts the community. Maybe action combat with significant non-combat downtime is a good solution.
wouldnt change a thing, body collition can be a pain but even that doesnt stop it, its very easy to hardwire a keyboard and mouse to controll multiple computers without any 3th party software, hardest part is getting all characters in the same spot but that didnt even help.
Ive even multiboxed FPS games this way , no software required no bots ,nothing.

Multiboxing is bad in any game. Should be forbidden and actively fought with.
I am not going to play any MMORPG that allows multiboxing again. (yes I am aware almost all of them currently allow it).

Not a Multi-box issue, thats a 1-2 vs 5 issue.

disclaimer - I havent played EQ1 in the last 3 years
multiboxers never bothered me in groups,
people that went AFK all the time did bother me -- especially in dungeons

I am all for the prevent it with gameplay option....
Personally i hate when things get disallowed, if people want to try, let them, but just program the game that it becomes really inefficient.
