LF MMORPG suggestion

berenimberenim Member UncommonPosts: 162

Hey folks,

I add my request into the long line of people looking for suggestions.

I started back in the time with Anarchy Online. I loved how I started out in the space station, asked about for Omni, Clan and Neut, was shot down by aliens and had to acutally swim to the starter island. It had a strong immersive feeling, like really being a settler in a new world. Entering Borealis with people running left and right, asking for buffs, chatting was really like "wow!". I loved exploring RK and Shadowlands and spent time with an orgmate exploring the world while semi-RPing.

Time went by, WOW came and drained AO. When it was hard to find a tank and more and more content shiftet to PvP I went on. Loved Vanguard (spent 5 Minutes walking to a tower just to see what was there), but it was buggy and empty, Ryzom was way to empty to, but I loved the setting and the world. Another one that had me walking somewhere just to enjoy the scenery (climbed up to a waterfall this time). Went on and played CoX, some F2P games, Rift, TSW but most of them felt like games not like worlds.

I do not care about "endgame" and a race to there. I love the journey and when my char is "finished" and just running the same instances, just to get the gear to run the same instance in a harder mode I get bored. I don't mind working for something, but don't have the time to grind x hours/ day anymore. No go: FFA PvP, as I don't like a setting where I can'tz trust anybody. I like to work together fo rthe greater good, not having to fear if I'll have a dagger in my back without it having consequences for the offender. I want a complex game that gives me goals. So better gear or whatever should be to make me able completing things I could not before, not doing the things I did just a level harder. I want depth and lore, I loved that AO and Ryzom had mobs that were actually just that: Inhabitants of the world.

Any suggestions?

I know the feeling.. I honestly can't Imagine any game that could satisfy you.. I haven't found many that can satisfy me right now... Most games I play I only play because I have someone to play with. I haven't found any that I would play for their own merit. The only game that I keep going back to is AOW... Thats only because i feel that it gives you the most customization out of any game available.. you can do what you want and really make your character your own.. It just feels so empty when i log on now adays.. and the ppl i knew before quit.. so... i can't play a pvp game alone.. I've tried some older games like daoc.. and it seems fun..

I think your definition of FFA PvP is probably different than what I'm thinking of: why would you assume the fact that you are able to kill another player just about anywhere necessarily equates to there being no consequences for the offender?

My 10+ years of experience in a "FFA PvP"* game have led to just the opposite conclusion: there are those in game who I trust for miles.

However, if you can't deal with being PK'ed, I would recommend a different game.  Otherwise, the title of the game I recommend to you is in my signature; send me a pm for a 2-week friend key if you choose.  The reason I think you would like it is how you describe progression, the journey, the scale of the game world, and that you mention lore.

*there are Guarded, Monitored, and Unmonitored areas; depending on where you are and what your standing is with the faction that controls the space around you, the consequences will be different for the assailant.  The starting zone is completely safe, and players of the same nation cannot damage each other (except when dueling) in the starting system.

I would recommend Wushu, but this highlighted. There is consequence for the offender, but you can only trust your guildies, most of them. You wont have to worry about that literal dagger in the back if your not putting daggers in peoples back, but yeah things can happen.

What I can't stand about PKing is the lack of consequence outside of PvP. Sorry, to me it is no consequence if the "offender" gets the PvP and status he wants. It also breaks immersion to me if a marrauding murderer can roam free in the world if the lore isn't extremly harsh. Rulers usually don't like their sheep being killed. If a criminal system would lead to a serial killer not being able to trade with every merchant, only able to enter cities at high risk and getting jailed if caught. That would be the risk - consequence factory everyone is talking about. Playing a killer should come at  a risk. I could also deal with it on  a RP server with someone truly roleplaying a bad guy in a good way, not just "I'm the big bad foozle! Deal with me!"

So there is no MMORPG anymore with a sense of adventure, a vast world and not just a race to endgame followed by doing the same things over and over again? No more sense of wonder? No more being part of a world (in newer games maps often feel more like levels, than part of the world with everything being placed to be used, not to be explored). I fonldy remember going into Tinker Tower and just see how deep it is. We went down and down till we wiped. I'm looking for something with a good atmosphere and lots of stuff to do, that feels like being part of something, not jjust playing something. Anyone guessed I took the old way of P&P RPG -> RPG chats -> MMORPGs?

Well, everything you describe is in Vendetta Online (except for the jail part... look to AoW for that); PKing another player who has Admired or above status in Monitored or Guarded space does indeed carry heavy consequences.  The killer may have a bounty placed on his/her head, if his/her standing drops low enough s/he may be persistently hunted by NPCs of the faction in whose space s/he made the kill, and s/he will no longer be able to trade with merchants of that faction.

Sometimes there are benefits to being an outlaw: certain missions only appear to players who are "hated" by certain factions, and some players may view it as a mark of pride.  Unlawful Greyspace is where some of the best trade routes can be found, as well as the "grey market" of items much higher than usually allowed by one's licenses.  However, these benefits are vastly outweighed by the benefits that come from being in good standing, in my opinion.  One can venture into Greyspace while being in good standing and benefit from opportunities there, however one's good standing will not protect one in unlawful space as it would in national or corporate territory.

It sounds as though you may be searching for something in your past, though; I'm not sure if there's anything I can do to help you with recapturing that feeling.  Times have changed, the market has changed, and technology certainly has changed.  I also took the route of pen and paper RPGs to (one) MMORPG.  I could be wrong, but it looks like you may have some of what Herbert Spencer would call "contempt prior to investigation".  There's nothing wrong with wanting to avoid PvP; however, I disagree with the assertion that PKing carries "lack of consequences outside PvP"... my experience has been just the opposite.
