SOE's BIG focus should be Exploit/Hack prevention!!

I hate that this is my big concern -.-......

I look back at 1999 running around EQ and just taking in how vast the world was.  Everything about that game was a new experience.

Unfortunately, gaming has taken a turn for the worst.  Gaming is no longer about the journey, and is now about the destination...and furthermore, who can reach it first.

With this constant competition.....has spawned a new breed of gamer.  The people who focus on finding any way possible to exploit or cheat the game.

If exploits are found, they generally end up doing at least one of the following:

1. Killing the games economy (Ex. Diablo 3).  Although this exploit on the AH was used by many, its wasnt exactly Massively known.  But either way, it gave those who knew it the means to buy everything up on the AH, and hike up prices in doing so, thus destroying the economy so badly that anyone who was not aware of the exploit had to farm for WEEKS to even get one item worth while.

2. Giving a select few/many such an unfair advantage that everyone just quits, seeing no point in continuing to put the effort in to achieve something that was given for free to those who exploited (Ex. Neverwinter)

3. Bots.........I dont think I really need to explain this one >.>.....

These are two major example of games that could have been real big hits!.......well.....>.>.....Neverwinter could have been a real big hit!

But due to these exploiters, the result ended up massacring the games player base.

I have no doubt that EQ Next will be a great game.  I played EQ1 since the start, and didnt quit until EQ2.  And although EQ2 wasnt quite up to par, It is still my MMO to this day.

My biggest concern is that SOE will put so much effort into making a great game that really IS what a lot of us want, and then have it ruined by some exploit that permanatly effects the games economy or player base.

I really hope some in depth testing is done with everything currency/transaction based to ensure that this doesnt happen.

Anyone else know of any games that had some real potential but were brought down by an glitch, bug, hack, or exploit?

I didn't ever play any SOE games that were majorly infiltrated by bots... Sniffers on the other hand... ShowEQ and junk like that were huge at one time.

I think the worst botting problem I've ever seen was in GW2.  They were literally everywhere.  You couldn't go to any zone without running across a mob of bots for a while there.

I think the BIG Focus will be getting money.

Satisfying some very diverse and mutually hostile segments of their own player base(s).

And getting lots of money. Open the cash shop!

Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

Longbow Human Rangers with bear!!! But Anet took care of it and mass (something like 10k bans in a single day).

New MMO release are like that. SWTOR had bots that spammed right beside chest in the wilderness. They were set on the respawn time too, which mean that as soon as they showed up a character appeared out of thin air, took the stuff in it and disappeared.

I expect FFXIV to have a bunch of bots on release too. It's just the way it is.

Now, Smedley, SOE CEO, hates cheaters and people who exploit games. He even called one out on twitter not long ago (a PS2 cheater). Expect any EQN cheaters/exploiter to get kick and burned once SOE can id them...

Well, in general the big focus on exploits just ended up with  more limitation and less freedom for the players...

And in the end worked coutra productive for the whole genre... Preventing exploits and extreme mostly PvP driven ballancing got us where the genre is now...

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

i don't think economy has ever been the reason players have left a game .EQ had tons of cheats and exploits. I even used the lodi cheat where i could dc a small turtle that had like a million hit points and solo lodi on my druid and there was many diff exploits. Back in the day i didn't know they were exploits it was just something in the game to us.

SOE did stop a lot of these exploits but none of them were the reason for players leaving even. But i hate exploiters as much as you do and i don't think i would of done what i did if i knew it was cheating and i never bought plat. So economy is important but having more money in game don't make players leave but a bad game will as in NW and diablo3
