    WTF

Yeah that race need taming down and as for them armour pads DELETE and start again please they look shit. If I wanted cartoon I would go wildstar or Wow so please STOP making these shit looking characters. I like the concept of EQN but they have to change the look and smooth it out a little for me to spend the same time I did in EQ 1999 until 2008 Loading...please wait!

What I do find funny though is all them PS4 noobs who kept going on about how this was a PS4 game, well guess what WRONG!!!!

if they can really pull off the "permanent world changes" thing, it would REALLY set the bar high for any other game after it to call itself immersive.

also i like the warjack!  did it make a wrong turn in the iron kingdoms??

well, now for the wait i spose :)

There are some really intriguing ideas there but the art style disappoints. It seems unfair to dismiss it purely on the basis of cartoon graphics, and the majority of players will have no problem with it, but I do and I will.

    Bill nice article!

One question though. Did the EQN team give any reasoning for using a cartoon game engine?

    I noticed that, too.

My first thought was GW2 footage. Red circles on the ground, big armor, very brightly colored. I just do not see anything breathtaking or "awesome" here that I have not seen in some other games. And it definitely did not remind me of EQ.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

I'm sorry, but did anyone else notice that the longer this went on, the more "forced" the applause seemed?  I believe with good reason.

    1. I understand this is merely Alpha at this point, but the combat appeared choppy and messy.

    2. They enthusiastically touted the new character models when Wildstar is already doing it.

    3. They called a multi-class system one of their "holy grails", when other games are ahead of them on that.  Example: Final Fantasy XIV, its out in a month...they have it.

    4. The environment is not "completely destroyable" as they put it.  If that were the case, can you imagine the (i'll be it small) percentage of malicious players that will try to basically wipe entire areas off the map?

I'm not saying the game won't be good, but this isn't the second coming of Christ that some people want to make it out to be.

As a modeler/texture artist for games myself, It's much easier to create lots of content for a cartoony design over hyper-realistic. AND it still looks good. Plus, like you said, it doesn't get dated as quickly.

Meh. Not my cup of tea so far, I'll check back in 6 months and see what's up.

EQ1 was amazing for me for years. I couldn't stand EQ2 and this just doesn't do anything for me from the initial announcements. I wish SOE the best though, and the players that like what they see so far too! Hopefully it all comes together for you all.

It looks and sounds really nice.

They are trully going for the Next Generation Themepark here.

But it will be still a themepark from the sounds of it, and that is what worries me...

I will definitelly give it a try thought...even if I may end up playing it for a month or two should it be a themepark..

It does have many "sandbox" elements in it, the fact that there are no level is exciting...

I think I just need to learn more about it.

The multi classing worries me about. I have seen that on Champions online when all kind of mixes were created taking away all the logic and the immersion of the game.  Who will fight an half healer-tank-wizard guy in heavy armor. There should be some limits to this freedom or anarchy will rein supreme.

Does nobody realize that orcs, trolls, dark elves, etc aren't real anyways? By definition, you cannot make them look any more or less realistic than in the videos people are looking at above. The look of a game is hit or miss depending on who you talk to anyways, always has been and always will be. The people pissing and moaning about it would just have something else to piss and moan about if it was ultra realistic looking. There are in fact people you can't please. SOE in particular has this problem, and it's funny when you think about it. WoW may have had better subs over time, but SOE games have dominated the landscape for years, and to an extent still do. When you stack everything together, people have gotten more enjoyment out of SOE games than any of the other ones, yet people say things like SOE sucks or whatever. It's ridiculous.

You can also tell very easily who in this thread watched the revel, and who just glanced at the screen shots and videos, and glanced over the text. Personally I was a little taken back by the artwork at first. What I found really interesting about it, is that it is, and this is without a doubt true and it's really not up to debate, a perfect rendering of concept art you have seen in the past for not only this and other EQ games, but for many other MMORPGs overall. It was striking when I realized that's what I was looking at. Then they started the movement and everything else and I was totally in and sold.

They very same people who go on and on about stale games and systems are the very ones who are quite literally saying that SOE isn't going to be able to pull off what they are discussing, so why bother. That is paraphrased in many places in this thread. Again, ridiculous. If some people here don't want to play a fantasy MMORPG that is not only innovative, but is almost an exact replica of concept art that developers and artists have always wanted in their game, well.. That's too bad for you.

I think it all looks fantastic, and I can't wait to start playing around with the tools.

Vanguard, EQ, EQ2, LOTRO have absolutely terrible character models.  There's a reason people always bring up "plastic" looking.

Now, LOTRO has a beautiful game world, but the rest are all pretty ugly to me.

Because when you make it realistic, you end up with an outdated looking engine like EQ2. When that game out, it looked pretty good!! Now it's looks painfully bad, while WoW still holds up for the most part.

A more "animated" style is lot more timeless than going realistic.

Honestly, this isn't even opinion...it's been shared by developers of various games time and time again as to why they choose this method. I love realistic graphics, too, but there is your answer.

See this is the argument I always see for why realistic graphics get worse over time - EQ2 references.  Sorry but it isn't 2004 anymore, and graphics have progressed to a point where the quality of "realistic" graphics are so good they are not going to somehow look terrible in 10-20- or 100 years.

"But let's be clear here: EQN will sport the trinity and traditional class roles. Healers, Support, Crowd Control, DPS, Tanks, rejoice!"

    That's it, I'm a fanboy.

    Is SOE freakin serious?

I have never seen another game that looked more like World of Warcraft than this thing does right now. It looks like they hired away a bunch of Blizzard artists to do the visuals. That armor style is strictly WoW, and frankly one of the reasons I am playing EQII right now is to get away from the clunky, chunky armor style of WoW. Don't get me entirely wrong, I don't hate WoW armor in its entirety, and it mostly fits the style of the game - but it is NOT EQ. Give me armor that looks metallic (EQII does a great job here), and weapons that look like they might actually be sharp.

Sure, there is some very good stuff Love the looks of the lion-race (Keeshan?), saw facial expressions and  the human face looked marvelous, but right now it's just WoW with a few tricks up its sleeve and an F2P model thrown on top of that.

It is just not EQ, and it certainly isn't enough different than WoW to make me give up characters I've been playing for all these years (though Blizzard has been doing a good job of killing off my enthusiasm all by themselves). Combat looked similar to WoW, too.

We've seen these WoW clones with new tricks added for, what, 6 years or more now? They trend to be profitable enough to stay alive, but they are not thought of as great games by the community, they are thought of as WoW clones and sneered at. I never thought the EQ team would be part of that. SOE, sure, but I thought the EQ guys were just better gamers at heart.

I have to say something else here, too. What's up with re-hashing EQ for a third time? Seriously, they expect to win over more players by making a WoW version of EQ? Haven't they done enough WoW-like damage to the previous games already? There is only one way this would be cool to me, and that's if they were making EQNext for the "casual" players and restoring the other games to what they used to be.

Needless to say, I'm very disappointed at this point.

Have played: Everquest, Asheron's Call, Horizons, Everquest2, World of Warcraft, Lord of the Rings Online, Warhammer, Age of Conan, Darkfall

I don't want WoW art style. In fact, I despise it. GW2 has great art style. If anything, copy them. Imagine this game with GW2's art. So awesome. Instead we get this Saturday morning cartoon b.s.
  • evilastroevilastro Member Posts: 4,270

Perfect, its exactly the game I have been waiting for. Love everything about it, the art style, the concepts, the multi-classing, the dynamic world and the lack of levels. I love how your class changes how you move around the world. Also loved how the combat works. It looks like the game that GW2 should have been.

Going to be my new home for sure.

It's awesome. It's been awhile since I've been excited about a MMORPG like this. I want it and I want it now.

As a EQ vet of 14 years I was hoping for EQ1 with a new coat of paint, and they wanna give us Lion king online. No thanks I'll stick with the original.
  • xyagentguyxyagentguy Member Posts: 78

Multi-class to the extent that they implied makes me want to vomit.  EQ has always had a rich history of clear classes.  I like using vertical and horizontal progressions both to distinguish myself and specialize.  I'd even be able to swallow being able to advance a secondary class at some point in the game, but one that makes sense.

Plate wearing, fireball throwing, sword wielding, instrument playing, backstabbing, teleporting, healer?  No thanks.  Sounds stupid to me.

I prefer realistic Graphics myself but i dont mind with cartoonish that much.

What i want is the feel of the world to be right... from what i saw the world is really nicely done and i could feel immersed in it. the animation was amazing..that sliding moves ala lara croft were nice for a mmo game. also the ability to destruct and build and all that creative things and the possibilities of player driven world... the open world pvp and castles and sieges and all that stuff would be amazing. the only concern is if they can pull it off from theory to action..and how much the game will suffer by bugs etc when it comes out,.. btw did they say it gonna be launched later this year or they talked only about the developers kit?
