I pre-ordered the week it was available, in order to make sure I could get the PC collector's edition physical items. I didn't want to wait and lose out. Since I played the beta test phase 3 right afterwards I didn't feel the need to cancel.
Why? Because it was only 25€ and there is no other new mmorpg left to play for me.
On top of that FF14 shouldn't be completly shitty. Played closed beta till lvl25 and it was ok overall. The only thing that really grinds my gears is the map.
I did not preorder even though I will be playing this game and I am highly looking forward to it. The reason is because I work doing most of the day, so a head start will not be something I can really take advantage of. If I wasn't working then I probably would have preordered it. I am also not a player who needs to be the first or among the first to get to end game. I don't have that much time to play. Instead I get to the end probably slower than most.

What I find baffling is these same people ponied up with their $60 bucks and bought GW2 last year. Just for the cost of GW2 box alone before any money spent in the Shop, you can play FF14 for 3 months which is longer than many had actually played GW2 in the 1st place. Add to that whatever they spent on Gems. It just makes these troll posts a little hypocritical.
I refuse to preorder this game. Played to about level 11 in the beta and quit abruptly afterward.
No point in continuing seeing as I didn't want to waste the story on a character i couldn't keep. And being one of those who bought it during 1.0 i gotta love the fact that i already own my copy. Just wish open beta would get here faster
i preordered digital CE for pc the moment they announced. From 1.0 to now they blew my expectations out of water and i can finally play the game i've been waiting for really soon yet it feels like its ages away.

How many races do you want? There hasn't really been many playable races in FF history. Classes will continued to be added over the life the game they said. One is being added for launch. I would expect 1-2 classes a year though as FF has a lot to add still.
1-2 more races would be awesome IMO. I guess mostly I am bummed about the lack of classes. Do you know what class is supposed to be added by launch?
28 classes at launch aren't enough? And I thought I was hard to please haha
Are you just saying mix-matching classes or are there 28 classes? The only classes I see are:

Since the endgame jobs consist of a primary class augmented by 2 secondary classes, there is a LOT of room for them to add more in the future.

That would be 7 classes I don't include crafting/fishing a 'class'
I think he's mixing in jobs as classes. There's the 8 combat classes (you forgot arcanis), and the gathering / crafting classes. And then there's ~16 jobs for those classes which are supposed to be available. We don't know what they'll all be yet, though. We only know about ~8 of them.
If you break it down to a number it is quite a lot. However there is a lot of overlap between classes & jobs.
- OP, I haven't preordered yet. The game is gorgeous, I had a lot of fun the first beta phase. The next (3rd) beta phase I found myself at a loss for what to do. Part of it was because I knew the beta would end, and I didn't wanna just grind away on stuff that was going to get whiped, but another part of it was I took a step back and looked at what the game was (feature-wise). The beta had pretty much none of the features that have been promised in the game yet. And that has me very cautious about this title. I hear a lot of potentially cool things being offered, but none of it is playable yet. So I'm not sure how much if it is hot air yet, or if it'll be implemented and be amazing.
I will say that aside from 1 solo-quest, I found the game insanely easy. One of my favorite things about FFXI was how difficult it was, and I'm not sure I like how far in the other direction they took this title.

its too bad you are not counting gathering and crafting classes since they have their own gear itemization, stats, resource pool, special abilities and questlines.

Even still, Without the crafting classes, you have 8 primary classes which further expand into their associated jobs.
Paladin, Monk, Warrior, Dragoon, Bard, White Mage, Black Mage, Summoner and Scholar
Ahhh jobs! I was missing that. Well that's cool then, I was hoping there would be more developed classes and that's pretty much what the jobs are. Cool. I will give beta 4 a go and see how it is. I played only a bit in beta 3 and combat seemed pretty standard. I also will echo I was hoping it would be a bit more challenging, though I think I only made it to level 10, so I can't comment too much ha. It was painfully easy though. I will definitely try it again for this last beta though. I need something to play until EQN/ESO/AA/BD come out which none seem to be this year sooo....
After seeing the EQN presentation, I have reservations about this game delivering.
I mean it's Final Fantasy and all, though not the original devs from the 80's / 90's, but every other MMORPG seems more pale.
I'm not sure what this game adds to the genre anymore.
For me that the other way , after seeing Everquest next presentation I have order final fantasy 14
Seriously destroying ROCK and stuff so next Gen ?? With a cash shop , aiming for the casual and with wow graphic... FAIL
destroying stuff is defnitly something news...yes, especially if its as they say. F2P has to have a cash shop (would have prefered P2P myself, but i cant change that) and where did it say its aiming for the casual and has WoW graphics? sorry have you seen EQ which pre-dates WoW? its always been colorful high fanatsy. You know what games targeting the casual and copying WoW on purpose? FFXIV...and the devs say so themselves.
???
EQN definitely has a more cartoony WoW-esque artstyle. I played EQ and EQ2 for years. EQN does NOT look anything like EQ.

This is an excellent point! I only played GW2 for two months, so that's $30 per month.
No pre-order, even though I'm a bit tempted. I just haven't much time with the game in beta due to beta events being on weekends when I have better things to do than play videogames. I also haven't played a MMO in a long time, and don't know if I want to commit much time to one.
Really, probably the only way I would even buy this game is if I get hired for an actuarial position I applied for, and move away. That should open up some free time. Otherwise, I'd probably play less than 5 hours per week, and at the amount of time, it really doesn't seem worth it to me.
Yup, preordered on the day they released it straight from SE's site. Hadnt played the game yet back then but knowing how dedicated the team has been and the overall attitude from both SE and Yoshi (including the dedication to P2P) warrants an honest try. Of course, since then I have played the beta and couldnt be happier with that decision. Would not be bothering with this game if it was f2p... or if it ever does, id jump ship the minute it was announced and never buy another SE game.

You realize the only extremely successful, and still currently successful MMOs are Pay to Play right?
Killing dragons is my shit
those classes build into other ones from what I understand.

I played the beta and while it's a great looking game i couldn't get past the agonizingly slow pace of combat. The long GCD just really annoyed me.
I can understand why some people are excited for the release but this game just isnt for me.

I just preordered and cant wait for the game to launch! Anyone know of any good websites with information about classes and jobs?
I cant decide if Im going to go Pally tank or Mage DPS I would like to read up alittle bit
I found some good info here:

http://xivdb.com/
Is the most comprehensive database so far.
Here is a pretty detailed starter guide someone wrote up:
