Well for me the only term I can think of to classify this kind of gameplay is freepark.
Themepark gameplay is to follow the quest hub from A to B till the end and raid till you are blue in the face while sandbox is more free play.
GW2 you are not forced to follow A to B to C in the manner you have to in a themepark game but yet you cant roam the world how you see fit.
GW2 falls in the middle of these to gameplays in my opinion, so is freepark a new genre being born in your opinion?
If it's not broken, you are not innovating.

Who the heck cares.
I log in, i have fun.
If you really want, you can call it the new WoW because now developers have to say "it is not like GW2" instead of "it is not like WoW".
Currently playing: GW2
Going cardboard starter kit: Ticket to ride, Pandemic, Carcassonne, Dominion, 7 Wonders
Well, it feels like a single player console rpg game designed for a Super NES controller.

Imo, it's most certainly theme park, it's just not a theme park designed in the image of WoW. It's dev created content, dev created stories, dev driven world development. I'm not going to get into this argument for those who hold a certain opinion but it is very easy to define as a theme park.
Now, does it matter? Not really, each game is its own beast, and should be judged on its own merits. We don't need general labels to define these games.
This is how I see it.

My opinion
The possibility of the universe collapsing into a singularity is higher than the birth of a perfect MMORPG.
It's not a "sandbox", since there aren't any tools for creating user-generated content.
It's more like a themepark now with the Living Story. Just like a carnival that comes and goes.
The overall game is mixed with "themepark" elements and adventure/explorer elements too. That's probably the best way to describe GW2. It has a lot of other features too, such as action combat and jumping puzzles also.
GW2 fits within the themepark category perfectly. You run around from point A to point B doing quests...ehhem...excuse me, hearts! You do scripted and predictable events which often don't differ from hearts at all.
At max level you either run dungeons or grind achievements like crazy. How is that not a themepark?

Themepark for sure. I left GW 2 because it is so much WoWlike I couldnt believe it. Especialy hardcore grinding as "end game" where you just grind as hell so you can grind more. I prefer items you drop being not account bound etc. so you can sell them and so on. In GW 2, everyone has to grind ton of .... to get some ...
GW 1 is so much better online game even now.
Played: Lineage 2,Guild Wars 1 and 2, Age of Conan, Ragnarok Online, LOTRO, World of Warcraft, League of Legends, EvE online
Tried: KAL Online, Face of Mankind, ROSE online
Playing: CS:GO
Hardcore grinding so you can grind some more, pretty much sums up every MMO..... even sandboxes.
It's what I call a retroactive sandbox. It's a themepark (albeit a very free-form one because of the varied choices of leveling zones) until you hit 80, and then becomes a sandbox afterwards, as all content is kept viable via downscaling.
The game would probably have been even better if levels had been left out entirely - it could have been a full sandbox right from the start with fewer effort vs. reward issues.
Its a themepark
Gw2 IMO is a themepark you just have different understanding of the term. Themepark doesn't necessary mean awful with Gw2 being one of the very few exceptions. It's a themepark with a lots of freedoms. With that being said ... I love to come back from 10 hour work and just relax with friends in the world of Tyria. Be it WvW, sPvP, dungeons .... just being with nice people talking about stuff is more than enough.
P.S: I met these people in Gw2 so f*** you to everyone that says Gw2 community sucks or its not active community. Made a 5-man group and love it ever since.
P.S: Underworld baby |o|
Well, kinda yea. But in games where you can sell everything you drop its something else. You can go places you like, drop something else and sell for money and after buy what you need or you can change stuff. In GW 2 a lot of things are bound to char or account and you get tokens for dungeons and so on as in WoW so you cant really trade some interesting items. Which makes it master grind since you have to grind yourself for something on that particular spot where you are supposed to grind. And thats my problem with GW 2. :P

My girlfriend has legendary. We bought the precursor with gold 6 months after game launch. I wouldn't call that grinding because we were playing only few hours a day mostly running dungeons. You can't really grind in Gw2 as in occupy a single spot and waste your ass in there. They have a system that gimps your droprates if you farm in 1 place for too long same as gimping your rewards if you do the same dungeon path twice. It is to prevent you from grinding .... yet the sheep knows what it knows and goes grinding
A Themepark MMO are designed in such a way you have to play the game in the right order to progress you have to do the ! in the right order so next batch of ! quests gets unlocked.
It's pretty much impossible to play the ! quest chain in any order you like.
In GW2 you don't have to follow the ! you can play in any order you like, you have several ways to level up your toon to max level hence the the word freepark, that's why I dont see this game as some of you have sead It's a fully Themepark game.
If it's not broken, you are not innovating.
EQ2 doesn't make you follow the !, you can level in multiple ways (PvP, grinding, dungeon makers, questing) and you can mentor back down to lower levels just like in GW2. But EQ2 is still a themepark, just like GW2 is. The rides are already determined for you, you have no impact on the game world.
I would have to say Themepark too.
Whilst you do have some choice where you go to level lets not pretend it's not a guided experience. You cannot start out in the end game areas and level up finishing with the low level areas. You still follow A>B>C>D, there is just more A,B,C, D etc. Your choice is dodgems or teacups, pick whichever you are still in for a ride.
The arguement that it's not a themepark because the quests are not rigidly linear and mandatory for progress is misguided, as by that definition WoW wasn't a 'themepark' for a great deal of it's lifespan.
