Build Changing

PNM_JenningsPNM_Jennings Member UncommonPosts: 1,093

So I came back from vacation to find warrior traits all brand spanking new, and there's a build I want to try out. Which has lead to a problem: I don't have the money to change all my gear. Regardless of what they may have initially wanted, Anet has made a game that is all about gear, and while resetting traits is easy as pie, getting all new exotics, sigils, and runes is a massive pain. Not to mention reskinning.

As it stands I can't quite bring myself to play, because the way I want to play is with this different build, but I can't make that happen without a bunch of grinding for gold. I dunno. Sorta feels like everything Anet stated that they wanted from GW2 has fallen flat on its face.

Anyway. This can't be just me. There has to be other people who have noticed this problem. Unless there's some crazy work around in which case I'm all ears.

It's not really that hard to gear up.  There's a lot of ways you can do it.  Run dungeons.  Get achievement points.  Do WvW.  Get gold.  Do events.

You can gear up with badges of honor, dungeon tokens, gold, karma, or a combination of the four.  Gearing up in this game is way faster than any other MMO I've ever played.  Yes, you have to do SOMETHING to gear up, but if you want to just be geared up instantly that's mostly what spvp is for. D:

As long as you are willing to compromise with exotic vs. ascended stuff, of course, ascended things are time gated.

Which really isn't that bad, everything in the game is tuned for exotic.

If you're willing to WAIT, a couple weeks of casual play (A dungeon a day, a few events, do your dailies) will let you equip basically any gear stat spread in the game.  Some runes/sigils can get REALLY expensive, but there's plenty of low-cost alternative that are mere silver.

If you have to get it NOW, then yes, you'll probably have to grind some.  A few hours of busting your butt farming can get you the above though.

I do it the slow way.  I play slow, I hoard my stuff.  I could buy... eh.  Probably about 50 different sets of exotic gear if I wanted.  I don't farm either, I just play the game a bit every day. :P  Some days all I do is finish my dailies.  At most I get a few hours a day on my weekends.  If you actually play the game, all gear (Other than for cosmetic purposes) is in relatively easy reach.

It's not really a matter of wanting to get the stuff instantly, it's a matter of discouraging experimentation because it's cost and time prohibitive. I want to try out a build, but I can't because I'd have to get all new, expensive stuff just to check it out.

EDIT: Okay honestly the only solution I see is just sticking to rare equipment and forgetting about anything higher. It's dirt cheap, doesn't need its own special transmutation stone, and has negligible stat differences. Is this really what Anet intended though?

SPvP lets you try out most builds.  Alternatively, if you're JUST trying to try something out, green armor.

Yes, you heard me, green armor.  And major runes.

Cheap as hell.  You could buy those literally all day long.  It's a few silver a piece.  You can complete most content (Except the VERY hardest) with little extra effort with green armor.

It'll definitely give you the feel for a build, and do it with less than 50 silver, the money amount you get from doing a single story dungeon (Not including any drops other than the end chest)

You are super generous!  I am impressed.  You are either rich as hell, or nice as it.  Or both. :)

Haha! I just edited my last post with the same conclusion. Great minds think alike I guess. I guess I'll stick to rares for all my gear needs from now on (I like trying new builds).

Kinda disappointing though. I spent a LOT of time and money setting up my current armor build and now it's back to rares. Again, is this really what Anet intended? The economy has to be the worst thing about GW2.

Only today. sitting on 6.2k ish gold, and fixing to dive off into FFXIV 2.0. Have every class max leveled and geared. Nothing for me to do lately but farm and play the market.

It's not actually that hard to get a full set of exotic armor!  Is there really an MMO out there that lets you, from scratch with a max level character, gear fully within a serious day of play? D:

D:  You are crazy rich.  Feel free to send Meowhead (Yes.  That's my name in the game.  I'm a charr, obviously) any spare precursors or whatever you have laying around! <.<  I promise to take good care of them.

Wow. Thanks! It's always awesome to be reminded that people like you are out there! My character is Suda Kye.

Just do the current invasions event a few times, got 5 gold in 45 minutes yesterday without too much work or luck. It will also give you crafting mats for some exo stuff.

You can also buy an armor for karma in one of the orrian temples, you should have enough for at least a few parts.

I don't see that it should take longer than a days play to get all you need and that is surely not crazy work.

There are crazy work in the game but that is legendary stuff and getting all ascended items. I miss one vista in WvW now to really start on the legendasy project myself even though I make some clovers every week.

Dude I have enough gold and badges to gear my warrior 10 times and I don't even play the game very much. I bet I have played 10 hours in the past month. It's so easy to make gold, hell right now you get a gold just for loggin on in the achievement chest. You run with a good guild and you get badges of honor like candy. I can buy 10 sets of the WvWvW invaders armor right now.

There is no grind to this fucking game.

    I'm drunk.

I'm glad that was resolved quickly (many kudos to Toxia (I'm Volkon in game too... image)).  But, just in case this proves useful in the future, you can craft exotics fairly inexpensively, especially if you've been stockpiling mats over time. I have 400s in all crafting professions (spread over I think three characters), once you're there it's gravy. Use the mystic forge stones from the AP reward chests to make mystic salvage kits and you'll find you have more mats than you need soon enough.

    Oderint, dum metuant.

Man, I wish I had the financial sense to play the market, I'm only sitting on ~ 30g right now XD.

Agreed, mystic salvage kits are extremely useful to level up crafters (and to get ecto).

To get the 400 mats you can always throw in 10 ecto, 10 mystic coins (from daily/monthly), 10 obsidian shards (from karma in temple of Balthasar or laurels from a laurel vendor but that is more expensive) and 10 crystals (from Miyagi or whatever she is called near the MF for 6 skill points) in the mystic forge.

That often grants you 30 or so of a 400 mat and usually is a good deal, partucularly if you have plenty of ecto. It also gives you the clovers you need for legendary weapons now and then.

Worst crafts to level up is the ones needing loads of wood, huntsman and artificier. So wherever you play do cut down all the trees you can.
