Linking

Was going to post on the beta forums but was unable to do so.

Anyhow, I'm curious as to how many people here would like to see something like the "Linking" system in EQ II.  What this essentially allowed you to do was to create a type of hyperlink in any chat, and when someone mouses over it you got the same information as if it was in your inventory with a small pop-up window that you could close when you were done looking at it.  Something small that I thought was awesome in EQII, just wondering what others thought.

Also...there was the fact that EQII gave you the ability to open a small window within the game that linked to the wiki.  This was an awesome feature that made it considerably easier than alt-tabbing or having a second monitor.  Granted, you can play ffxiv in windowed mode....but who wants to cut their resolution for the sake of convenience if you don't have to?  I loved both of these features, and would love to see them eventually make it into ARR.

Not sure if I completely understand what you mean but if it is simply in game hyperlinking then yes, yes, yes! I really enjoy being able to put an exact item into chat I am wishing to sell and have potential buyers see exactly what I am selling same goes for the reverse of that.

To make it even simpler just have it instantly done for you if you drag an item into the text line.

That's exactly what im talking about in the first paragraph.

The second paragraph is basically an in-game browser window.  It would require some favoritism on the devs part to pick a website....but man that was an awesome little feature

Dragging the item i cant say i agree with though...sounds annoying.  Iirc...in EQII you just cntrl+click the item and it puts the link into whatever chat you have open.  I think that works better personally.

Anytime I have ever seen this in an MMO it was used to spam so no I don't want it. There is an AH to sell your stuff so really no need for it. If someone is to lazy to look for the item on the AH then they obviously don't want it that badly.

Linking items (and often also skills and quests and achievements) is a pretty standard feature in most (all?) major MMORPGs, I guess? That makes it even more surprising that it seems it doesn't work in FFXIV (tried to drag an item to the chat window but it only copied the item's name without creating a link). So definitely YES, this is something that is needed.

Actually, it would be great to go even a step further. For example in Rift you can link your entire crafting profession which is awesome. Someone who clicks that link gets a window that lists all the crafting recipes that you know and they can see what mats they need for each, which makes it super easy to offer your services as a crafter. Not sure if there are any crafting recipes in FFXIV outside of the ones you get automatically when levelling up, but either way, that would be a great feature to have too.

Looking items up on AH is all fine and all but what if you simply want to link an item you got to your linkshell/guildmates? With no global chat I doubt anyone would use it to spam "WTS -link to an item-" on shout that much anyway, if that is what you are afraid of.

That first part would be amazing indeed.

As for the reply I totally agree.  It was awesome when someone would get a piece of gear (especially for newer people) and be able to link it in chat.  Not a necessity by any means at all but a neat feature.  With no global chat to speak of the only spamming to worry about is local.  And since *chuckle* this game is so far behind the times and actually has zones.....it makes that even less of a problem.  Spammers are going to spam regardless....at least this way I can take a look at wtf s/he is talking about without having to look it up.
