Since it keeps coming up SE has put a notice in the launcher.
We are expecting major congestion during the period starting with the Early Access on Aug. 24, 2013 at 2:00 a.m. (PDT) leading up to the official game launch on Aug. 27, 2013 (PDT).
If a large volume of players attempt to login to the game simultaneously, certain players may receive the following message: “This World is currently full. Players in queue: ##.” If you receive this message, we ask that you please wait until your login is processed.
In addition, in order to avoid server congestion related issues from multiple characters concentrating in the starting areas, we may implement restrictions on logins and/or the creation of new characters for a period of time after the servers open to the public.
We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your understanding.

Any graphical, audio, or gameplay restrictions not seen in other mmos but found in FFXIV can be blamed on one thing.

That's one way of putting it.

There probably will be a big rush.
The last AAA MMORPG launch was a year ago (GW2). No other big IP has done anything since then, FFXIV is the first. I'd not be surprised if a whole bunch of players are piling-in simply because it's a new launch and the screenshots look shiny...
Logging Queues and restrictions? Yoshi..... my friend, you are doing it wrong. Your game is supposed to be AAA quality subscription mmo, you have the resources and the money to implement Overflow servers.
Stop this nonsense. Lame.
They were most likely not even the slightest prepared for the amount of interest in this game. And as far as I know Anet is the only company to implement overflow servers, it's not like they gave a plugin to all MMO devs so they could use overflow server technology. It would cost Square Enix time and resources to develop their own overflow tech, probably something they didn't want to do or even see a need to do.
On the other hand, if it goes the other way and lets say 'minimal' queuing occurs.....it looks like a home run of even bigger proportions.
Does anything other than bullshit come from you?

Sounds like what they did in phase 3, which was unbelievably good and went pretty smooth except for a few minor things. It's of course gonna be worse now. But with phase 3 in mind I would expect annoying queue's for a day or 2, then two new servers and no more problems after that. For those getting in I wouldn't expect too much downtime and lag which imo is much better than thousands of ppl clogging the servers, causing lag and disconnects.
I say good move.
I'd rather they throttled the traffic than have a situation where you queue for 2 hours, finally get in game and then get kicked 10mins later due to a server crash. Then you get to join the queue again for 3 hours, rinse and repeat....
And end up like rift with 80 empty servers to get shut down in 2 months?

Basically that. They could have opened more during OB last weekend but were concerned (or it is assumed) about popping open 5 new servers (just throwing a number out) and having the bulk of them empty or vastly under populated in comparison to others after the 'try before you buy' crowd elected to 'not buy'.
Server consolidations could potentially be worse (early on) to PR than a % of folks locked off as they were.
