At middle to higher levels the pace of combat is just perfect. It allows the player to really understand what is going on during the fight and so combat feels very eventful; unlike most other recent MMOs, its not just a hyper clusterfuck of button mashing and pixel vomit. Love it. I think the pace is definitely not slow... its not fast... its perfectly tuned for the combat to feel meaningful and impacting. I really think the developers did alot of work to tune the game this way and it feels fluid and epic because im aware of what my party members are doing as well as the boss. I just really think this allows you to savor the combat and skill system and group dynamics and because of this FFXIV stands clear apart and above from other MMOs.
I recently quit GW2 whose combat system is just a mess of wtf button mashing with zero teamwork other than clicking on party members in the downed state. I think the FFXIV combat system and boss AI is supremely satisfying largely because of this. the fights dont feel cheap and easy. love it.

Agreed. There seems to be some players that are jumping on this 2.5s cooldown bandwagon, yet they seem to skip the fact that not all skills use this cooldown and there are skills that are independent. Which leads me to believe the majority of people complaining haven't even gotten past level 9.
I think the real problem here is some people that like action combat do not like tactical combat. I personally prefer a mix of both and FFXIV has achieved that smashingly. It has a great mixture of both and with a little bit of timing "god forbid" you can chain attacks, hell there is even an attack chain bonus.
It has a nice balance and the original trinity of combat is much welcomed, the whole only dps and tanks that can heal parties idea was getting old and boring. Personally I like relying on others and FFXIV makes me feel that way and it's a cool feeling, roles actually feel correct again.
It's plenty fast. Healing Demon Wall, Ifrit - pretty much any of the hard post level 50 dungeons, is not an easy task.
The amount of "down time" I have is extremely minimal.
Demon Wall is probably the most fun I've had on a PvE boss in quite some time. I'm at the point where I can pretty much ace it!
I also agree, perfect pace for a mmorpg imo.
Agreed!
I think people coming from games like Guild Wars 2 or Terra will probably not like it but they should probably just wait for Wildstar or ESO. I, however, love the pace, it's perfect. It's like right inbetween WoW and Dark Age of Camelot. I hate these more action oriented MMO's where they limit the number of abilities and make combat a button mash-fest. No thanks.
It is awesome and paced just right. Especially as BLM, I have an interesting rotation that isn't always just the rotation. It changes based on whether I'm in FATES, soloing or dungeons. In dungeons, it's so nice to see CC is useful again and I've even gotten accolades from other players for being awesome with the AOE sleep. My training comes from days as a mage in Burning Crusade, lol, sadly after BC the mage's CC role seems to have disappeared. But that's a discussion for another thread in that other game's forums ;D.
Anyway, hopped on my low level pugilist for a different feel and boy is it different. I feel fast and stronger on single targets as Pugilist and can't wait to see how the class grows as I level. Gah, this game is awesome....
