computer keeps restarting itself...

So i just did a fresh new 100% install of windows 7 on my PC...it will run for about 15-20 mins and then just abruptly with no warning shut down and restart....any tips?

    Meh did you try it in safe mode? At least if it is stable there you can check settings, if it's not stable I think you may be sol. Oh and if it is stable you can check your dump files  prog I used for trouble shooting is windbg, and you can check windows for faults.

    hey ^^

     

    if the machine is rebooting "normally", i would say, its the windows updates.

    Normally there pops a window, maybe you know that, "reboot in 10mins" that hides often behind other applications.

     

    I suggest you check for and make the windows updates first, so there is an end on that.

    Then you want to upgrade your gfx-card drivers, maybe you did that also already.

     

    It can be a thermal problem, bugged hardware, hmm there is some other possibilities.

     

    Let me ask, have you upgraded from something older to Win7 or have you had Win7 already in use ?

    If you had it in use, why have you reinstalled ?

    Rebooting instantly without BSOD will not dump so you can't troubleshoot using debugging tools/symbols.

    If it does BSOD prior to the reboot then yes, download Windows debugging tools and all symbols.

    If it reboots instantly with no warning there are a few suspects.

    Heat, Faulty Power supply or at worst a mainboard problem

    Generally speaking if it is cpu or memory related you should get a BSOD.  However, you may wish to run memtest x86 (free) from cd and see if it catches a bad memory dimm.  Also, you could try some of the floating point math programs to catch cpu and something like ati tool or benchmark to hammer on the gpu.

    Good point about the BSOD, but I think windows has tools where you can read about restarts my computer has been stable for so long I can't remember the name of the log. But I do believe in safe mode you can at least read all of the logs and start drawing a picture. Thanks for reminding me and lets hope she stays stable a couple more years, lol.

    It could be that your time display is on.

    To check, go to start  then control panel then systems and security then go into power options and finely go to edit plan settings and change the settings.

    check if all the fans are working, CPU and GPU. It can be overheated.

    fresh new install because im selling the system so wanted to get all my old stuff off. Had windows 7 before. Did a memory test and passed with flying stars no errors...so im going to put new thermal compound on the cpu then go from there i guess...i have a feeling its the PS though....

    Computer Management > System Tools > Windows Logs > System  and/or Application logs. Look for Critical, Errors and Warnings and any Information entries near those.

    Does it boot OK in safe Mode?

     

    If So then reformat, If not then it's the hard-drive or a driver issue(probably)

    Someone I knew once had a computer problem where when they plugged in a usb stick, the computer would restart. So I just went to the device manager and updated their usb drivers and it was fixed. Maybe there are some motherboard drivers you need to install.

    That is usually caused by damaged electric contacts in the USB port coming into contact with the grounded port sleeve. The damage is usually caused by someone forcing in a USB device.  This can cause enough damage that the mother board needs to be replaced.

    I've seen this too - your not supposed to be able to plug in a USB device upside down, but there's no substitute for brute force.
