Your top 10 mmo forum "terms " you hate the most

DamonVileDamonVile Member UncommonPosts: 4,818

If you spend any time around forums you've learned that people who post often have a different language than those regular people out there in the world. They run the gamut from slang sayings to strings of single letters or even just misspelled words that everyone seems to do. I used the word terms to encompass the whole range of strange things you see typed out, but they can include just about anything in common use.

So what's your list of things you hate seeing. Explain or don't, but try and keep the list to 10 or less.

mine is

#1 loose The number of people who think this is the opposite of win..is shocking.

#2 dying mmo  You don't really have to look too hard to see someone saying such and such mmo is dying. Even though they have no facts and those same mmos go on for years. They don't like it and the fact that they no longer follow it obviously means it's dying. That or maybe they have a crystal ball and can see the future.

#3 L2p  Learn to play.  It's often the answer to someone that's ranting about how some quest or event can't be done when in reality they just didn't read the instructions. I still find it annoying when it's all some poster has to offer.

#4 p2w pay to win. At one time this meant a game was selling a gear/stat advantage from the cash shop that couldn't be obtained in a reasonable manner in game. Better gear, more health, better stats etc. Now it pretty much means WHAT I HAVE TO PAY FOR SOMETHING !!! ???

#5 Forum Troll This one once had a real meaning and could be aimed at a specific type of poster. The type of person who's only aim was to get a rise out of people. The best trolls where the ones who could hide their attempts behind legitimate posts. Now days it really just means someone that disagrees or doesn't like what I like.

#6 Grammar Nazi ( yes I know my #1 is this :P )  This thankfully seems to be in decline. Years ago it was the go to card to play whenever a poster couldn't think of anything else to say during an argument. We all come from different walks of life and even different language backgrounds. It always seemed lame to try and use someones poor spelling to discredit their opinion.

#7 wowclone  Every game is not a wow clone. It is an easy excuse not to like a game though.

#8 Slap in the face  I think people who use this probably need an actual slap in the face. It probably doesn't feel the same as that little nerf or change to your mmo.

#9 u mad  It was funny the first time I saw someone say this to a guy who was raging about ...whatever. It's so over used now it's lost it's charm for me. If someone isn't actually mad, it's not funny!

#10 Calm down  I see this all too often when a poster wants to make it seem like the guy replying to him is raging or unbalanced. It's almost like they're trying to use it like an insult. It makes me think the poster who used it...is extra sensitive. Handle with care.

"Fanboi / Fanboy" is very childish and sadly tolerated by the moderators most of the times, even though it's most of the times used as an insult.

Same for "carebear". People using that reek immaturity, and it usually shows in the rest of their posts. And it's also used as an insult often tolerated by the moderation.

Agreed on that too. It's kinda "excusable" when on a mobile phone, even if nowadays the keyboards on those phones are much better (I'm using Swiftkey on Android, amazing), but there's no excuse when on a PC keyboard. It's just laziness.

I rather have someone who makes spelling and grammar mistakes but who is typing full words than to have to decode the SMS language or some "1337 speech".

This game has/had so much potential

I hate when people use this sentence. Its such a fanboi excuse. If the game is crap then the game is crap. Potencial is meaningless unless it is used.

Hum... a game can have potential but sadly have a crappy production quality for instance. Granted, it's often used as an excuse, but it's also often used rightfully.

And a game being "crap" or not is often in big part just a personal opinion. The world isn't just black and white, many games are not the "best ever" but are also far from being "crap".

    1.  Sandbox - Really, all MMOs have at least some sandbox elements.  I've seen people class games with very few sandbox elements as sandbox and games with many sandbox elements as themeparks.  I'm sick of people classing games and basing whether they like the game or not based on whether they think it's a sandbox or themepark rather than if the game is fun or not for them and has the features they want.  I don't mind the term being used to describe specific features, but people like to lump MMOs in general in one category or another.

    2.  Themepark - See above.

    3.  Content Locust - Negative term coined by writers on this very site to describe power gamers.  I don't see why it's considered okay for casuals and players who consume content slower to bash hardcore / power gamers yet it's not okay for them to do the same.  I do neither and it's disappointing to see it promoted on the site.

    4.  "It's about the journey not the destination" - A phrase thrown around to further demean a particular style of player.  The most common Bartle player type is Achievers and those players enjoy progression (some slowly, some quickly) and again I don't think it's fair to bash the hardcore / power gamer type of player who does in fact enjoy getting to the "destination" as fast as possible.

    5.  Carebear - I like PvP, but only on equal terms so I've often been called a carebear.  I'm sorry I don't enjoy FFA PvP, ganking, and griefing and only enjoy PvPing when I feel like it.

    6.  WoW clone - I really don't think I need an explanation to justify how ridiculous this term is.

    7.  Strategic - No, a game is not more strategic because the combat is slower.  I can understand if you don't like action combat, but please stop spouting this BS that a game is somehow more strategic because all skills have 3-4 second cast times.

    8.  Old school MMO - Almost always used to describe how great they were and how modern MMOs need to be more like them.  While there may be certain things I agree with here, for the most part people need to stop with the nostalgia and trying to take MMOs back to the Dark Ages.

    9.  Tryhard - This is the absolute silliest insult you can call someone.  I don't understand how this is remotely an insult.  I consider it more a complement when I'm called a tryhard because it implies I'm actually putting effort in winning and not accepting defeat before it started and doing my best to accomplish whatever it is I'm trying to do.

    10.  No Lifer / Basement Dweller - Some people devote a lot of time towards one particular hobby while others may devote less time to many hobbies or just less time towards hobbies in general.  I don't see people getting called negative things because they are fanatical about their hobbies (things like sports, TV, movies, etc.).  It's not absurd for someone to devote many hours into one hobby nor does it mean they have no life outside of that particular hobby

    • "wowclone"
    • "easymode"
    • "instant gratification"
    • "hand-holding"
Anyone using any of those takes a hit in credibility in my book. Then there are terms which I hate when they are over- or misused:
    • "depth"
    • "innovation"
    • "dynamic"
    • "potential"
Also, I don't like people clinging on labels such as sandbox, themepark or picking apart the acronym "MMORPG".

u mad - was really funny at first but then it got over used and it's just annoyting now. I still use clam down when someone gets over excited usually as a joke.

Hipster: is being used so frequently these days that its began to mean person who has different tastes than me that I will label as such.   I'll just use an mmo everyone has played for an example.

Such as, "Oh, you don't like WoW, you must be an indie hipster"  or  "Only  hipsters still play WoW these days." or if a person thinks WotLK was the best expansion, that's a hipster view because obviously TBC was the best, (also a hipster pov).  Not even mentioning all the purest hipsters who think Vanilla was the pinnacle of WoW and everything since should be unmade.  Then there are the hipsters who say WoW is a Meridian 59 clone and so on until you get to hipsters who say they were playing WoW way back when it was only Gnomes and there wasn't a trinity yet everyone just healed..

I almost forgot to mention on of my most hated expressions.

"End Game". The whole damned gameplay completely changing when one hits some "max level". Thank you EQ (and clones) for that, really, thank you very much.

    Reply to OP,

I have to chime in on this topic. Also thanks for this great post about time someone thought this one up, good job.

    1. Noob - The new generation of mmo gamers ghetto slang for a new player that has no idea of what they are doing in a game and needs help from an experienced player.

    1. A. The Correction - Newb or Newbie is the correct term and has been and still is used by experienced seasoned gamers that's been around along time. Has more insult than just a new player that doesn't know what they are doing. Was used to provoke a PK duel in most circumstances.

    2. 133t - Means elite gamer, has skills next to a god with no equal.

2.A. The Correction - Probably one of the most annoying words to fall on my ears. There is no such thing as an elite gamer, FACT. People claiming this are either using hacks, scripts or other forms of cheats in game or play a game that is on the same level as Sesame Street, take your pick. There exist very skilled gamers and those type of gamers prefer and exist only in FPS genre game types no other and do not use any form of cheat advantages. Will even challenge hackers trying to kill them for the shear hatred of them using hacks.

    3. RoXXoR - Means rocks, awesome

3.A. The Correction - Another term that gets under my skin like a parasite. Used by complete imbeciles that think they are actually better than everyone else in a game. Is usually used in conjunction of 133t term. Side note, these type of gamers I see being targeted and killed repeatedly in FPS games.

    4. Carebear - The first time I heard this stupid term was back in the days of Ultima Online when EA decided to split the land into two separate zones. One zone was open PK and the other was no PK. The outcry from the scripting PKers was loud because they were the only ones that were upset over this.

4.A. The Correction - Macroing and then scripting became a mandatory requirement for playing UO, just about everyone was using those programs after so long in that game. The term Carebear rolled over to other games as well. This term is very annoying indeed. You have those gamers who do not want any part of PKing in mmorpg's simply because it is common knowledge nowadays that most diehard PKers are in fact using scripting programs. Scripting programs still work for most mmorpg's and cannot be stopped even after some companies have tried to implement security software and server recognition software to find and stop them, doesn't work. To call someone a Carebear because they prefer PvE is the same thing as saying that hydrogen power has never existed for the auto industry and why we are still driving vehicles that use gasoline, even electric hybrid cars still need gas.

Now to share with you some terms that I created and take credit for that now most people use all the time.

    1. F@(ktard - You get the first part of the word as I cannot spell that out. I created this word 20+ years ago maybe longer I can't remember anymore. Is one of the most insulting terms you can call someone especially in a flame war on a forum topic. When combined and used properly with other words there is no comeback for the other person to come up with. So popular has my term become that John Stewart even used it on the Daily Show for a skit he did on undecided voters some years ago.

    2. FTARD - Same meaning but abbreviated for forum use.

    3. A$$f@(k - You get the second part of the word as again I will not spell that part out. I created this term but don't use on forums. I use this only when I'm driving when confronted with an FTARDed driver on the road for many many years as well. Just gets my frustration out in the middle of a road rage incident usually provoking them to pull over so I can beat their a$$ or hit them with my vehicle. Trust me if you are a great driver like me and confronted with a complete idiot driving like an FTARD almost causing an accident with you you'll feel the same. Just use the word it will help get your anger across and you'll feel better. My creation just like the term F@(ktard.

Well I hope you enjoyed this post, there are more terms I cannot think of at the moment.

    EDIT:

Just thought of a few more terms that I absolutely hate.

    5. Blog - This utterly idiotic term surfaced some years ago but relatively still considered new. This is a post someone writes whether in a forum, online news site or other online media sites.

5.A. The Correction - It still is called a Post not blog. If I could find the person who spread this term like an std I knock the teeth out of their head. It's my pet peeve and the term blog irritates me even more than the first 4 I listed. I have no explanation why but it just does.

    6. Virul - Means when a video or post online gets millions of hits, (people that view it). Term was created by the news media for youtube videos that get millions of hits. Example would be Psy's music video that got hits into the billions.

    6. A. The Correction - For some reason this word just tweeks me the wrong way probably because it was the news media that started spreading this term like an std. Just the fact that it was the news media is why I hate it so much. I have no main term to replace I just refuse to use the term with something popular online as virul. I'll just say it's popular just out of spite.

Using "Toon" in reference to one's character.

"Char" as an abreviation of "Character", and "Alt" in reference to "Alternate character" I can live with, but "Toon" is stretching it too far.

This is not a cartoon, and more than likely, we are not playing Toon Town Online, so stop.

Have you looked at the character models of some titles? image  I think I can live with the term toon, though I prefer the avatar myself.

Alt doesn't work for me, I don't know what those are, every character I create is my "main" and I tend to play them all pretty much equally.

As for developer created characters I've used the terms npc, mob, pretty much exclusively.

People have come up with some great terms in this thread, and I agree with many of them.

Sometimes I think folks split hairs too much, such as with WOWclone, no, we don't think a game is really a "clone" of WOW, but it bears such striking similarities in terms of game play and design that a person really feels like they are playing the same MMO.  I first felt it in LOTRO, and have experienced it varying degree since then.

So yes, I can type out Modern, Standard theme park MMO or something like that when trying to distinguish it from titles that came before it such as EVE, AC1 or UO, or when in a hurry, just snap out WOWclone.

Truth is, if any title really did manage to clone WOW, (where it really matters) and then add a few improvements they might have been quite successful, but all have fallen short so far, mostly due to the competitive disadvantage they face against such an established title.
