Difference between EQNext and EQNL?

SyanisSyanis Member UncommonPosts: 140

I'm still confused as hell as the difference between EQNext and EQNext Landmark. It sounds as if they will be 2 separate games with the difficulty being more in EQNext. Now the Devs say that EQNL's created content *may* be included in EQNext but does that mean they select a rare thing to port over or if you design something in EQNL will it move to EQNext for you and your buddies to play/use/whatever.

So how do these 2 get along? Is EQNL just mainly a tool u can also do *light play* on to create content for EQNext?

    EQN

    - many classes

    - many races

    - one theme, the Norrath theme

    EQNL

    - one class, the adventurer

    - one race, human

    - No limit to what types of items players can build – Sci Fi, fantasy, modern, etc.

Landmark is a "built it yourself" MMO, sort of like a Minecraft server. Players will be able to explore, craft, trade, gather and build in it (and later fight once they add combat). Scripting monsters and encounters is apparently in as well.

Some of the buildings and landmarks might make it to EQNext (as long as they fit the lore and setting and get approved). I guess that some of the scripted stuff might as well.

SOE dev also talked about being able to import your EQNL character to EQNext (Adventurer class) and maybe even your "house" buildprint (again need to fit the lore/setting and probably there will be other limitations). Both game will share the same engine and a few features as well (like heroic movements).

That's about it, Landmark will be its own game and I'm not sure if they will "import" that many stuff from it to EQNext personally.

I've moved this the post from the interview comments to to this thread.  The content seems more appropriate here.

Here is the difference between Landmark and Everquest Next.  Landmark is a world creation tool with some game elements.  Everquest Next will be SoE professionally developed world, with more classes, more character progression, and all your more standard rpg elements.  Your EQ: Next character can visit all the player created worlds as well.  Basically EQ: Next is just another world within Landmark.

Perhaps the biggest question is what type of game elements will be included in Landmark.  Landmark is a world generation tool, but it also has minecraft/terraria like game elements.  How many of those game elements and how they impact you in Landmark has not really been discussed at this point.

The two articles that really clear up, for me at least, what Landmark will become and where EQ:Next fits are listed below.

    RockPaperShotgun

RPS: Due to all of this, your version of EQN is just one of potentially thousands of worlds players can go inhabit under these systems.

Georgeson: Yep. Ours is just a professionally developed alternative.

Before Georgeson let me have at the game (he knew he'd lose my attention at that point), we talked a bit about what players can expect in Landmark. And one thing that he emphasized is that the game will ultimately be quite literally a "build your own MMO" experience. Pointing out that developers said from the start that Landmark will have all the tools that were used to make EQ Next, Georgeson reiterated that the game will be about more than just construction, and players will have more than just those building tools at their disposal. He explained,

"When we do the AI editor, when we do the scenario builder, and the NPC editor, and all that other stuff, we're going to be putting it in Landmark. So as we develop for EQN, we're putting stuff in Landmark... You'll be able to do everything we can do. All of it.

That's right, folks: Not only will players be able to terraform their claims and build to their hearts' content, but they'll actually be able to introduce mobs and story arcs to their creations. Anyone who wants to ride the player-generated-content train non-stop will definitely want to hop into Landmark.

Sounds interesting but sounds also like the 2 won't really be connected unless SoE swipes a unique piece of your EQNL and sends it over to EQN. I was curious if it would be more of a player studio sort of thing were players could make it in EQNL and then available for people to play in EQN but not so.

Still though not much else to do until the real EQN comes along much later.

Yeah, that is what I had thought originally.  I figured Landmark was a minecraft like game from which SoE would pull assets for EQN.  While that may still happen, it appears that Landmark is not only a building/exploring/gathering game but also a world creation tool with world hosting.  Not sure what to think of it all at this point.

The trailblazer pack mentioned closed beta keys and alpha access. Is this just for Landmark or EQNext?

I'd say Landmark only.  EQ Next is a long ways off at this point.

Terry: Currently, none of the (founder pack) items are going to transfer into EverQuest Next once it launches. These items are of value specifically for a character or player in Landmark.

EQN will have a very different focus.
