How is this much hate possible?

glim3merglim3mer Member UncommonPosts: 154

I log into the game on a 10 day trial. I haven't logged into the game in around 2 years. My character is level 85, I join a group with LFG as a tank. We complete it with ZERO problems or deaths, and at the end 2 people in the party start cursing away at one of the dps for being "bad". I reply "why so much hate?" and I get cursed at and told to "go die".

It seriously boggles my mind, how people/kids these days can be so nasty and ruthless to one another. This was the main reason I quit the game back then, the community. I came back to give the game a try and the one thing that drove me away, I experience it within 30 minutes of being logged in.

It's really amazing how nasty some of the community in this game is. Truly some of the worst human interactions I have ever had the displeasure of experiencing have come from this games community.

I find that most online interactions are just indications of how people really are.  They might put on a mask in real life, but you will never see their true self in till they have no consequences.  The truth is, this is not unique to WoW.  I have yet to play a single online game where you don't have these type of people.  Best bet is to just /ignore and move on.  Don't let them ruin your game time.

I think all the Halo kids started playing WoW. :-p

but if you like why not try FFXIV?

I have found the FFXIV community to be nice 95% of the time.

Your more then welcome to join me on my server "Adamantoise". also. I have TS and we are overall very friendly bunch.

and 2.1 patch is coming out very soon, with a lot of cool content.  like PVP and Guild housing. :-)

I've met some amazing people in mmos and we're still friends today years later even though we're not currently playing an mmo together.  But many of us have kept in touch through facebook or have met up in other games over the years.

I've also met some real jerks.  Sometimes that negativity is so strong it stays with you for awhile.  That's why I've kind of become people shy in mmos lately.

When I went back to play and did dungeons, I never saw anyone speak at all, I even leveled a full other character from 1-90 and never had anyone speak not even once in a dungeon group. Got my characters all to 90 and then was done playing again. I didn't care to do the gear grind, so I was done once again.

I guess it depends the server group you have.

Some people drink alcohol, like me, and just look to ruin some ones day. But then the next day you hope to not see that person again since you know you were a butthead. I blame prohibition  for being lifted.

This kind of makes me think how devs get a lot of heat for how MMOs have evolved over the years.  Things like gearscore and dps meters have really made pve'ing in trinity games like these into a hassle and has brought out a lot of douchbaggery in people.  Yet those are player made addons.  I can see how those can be handy tools for guilds but it's lame when people use those as justification to be an arse in a pug type setting.  Not saying that was the case in the OP's tale, but I have seen similar situations becuase of group member constantly broadcasting their dps meter results into chat so everyone could see who is doing what.

Just remember what Bill Murphy says, "Don't let a bad pug get you down".

i love when people say that subscriptions weed out the kids and the [insert name here],  then this type of crap happens on a subscription game on a daily basis. Ive seen this behavior in sub based games a lot more than games with other models.

I think BLizzard (and other companies) should permanently ban these people without notice. Toxic community will not bring players back.

Clearly you haven't played many MMOSs lately, but this is what (online) society have become. My experience with WoW community is not that bad though... maybe because I play in a LA (Latin America) realm, don't know really image

On the other hand, I have to agree with you that WoW community is below the standards set by other games.

This a huge problem for me. Wow is by far the worst for it unless you venture into console multiplayer where I believe the IQ drops significantly. In my opinion wow has always been a love hate in terms of community. Its spill over has out right wrecked communities though. Especially the solid community of RIFT, after it went free players from wow ventured there and destroyed it. I for one am looking forward to TESO, I think they community will be amazing there. I can't see many of the issues spilling over to that game (I hope).

Gone are the days of entire server communities that cooperate and treat each other with respect.  I played FFXIV and I really don't think the situation is any better there.  Sadly, when MMOs became mainstream the dregs of the internet showed up and started bringing it down for everyone.  It's hard to deal with that much anonymity on such a massive scale especially with cross server LFG tools.

Your best bet is to join a guild or gaming community of like minded players and stick to just playing with those people.  At least you'll always know who you are dealing with then.  Leave the PUGs to argue amongst themselves.

for instanced content i think MMOS really need to scale the difficulty of the content based on the amount of players. That way if my group kicks someone for being an ass with everybody then we can keep going and finish. RIght now it is possible to do that if one DPS is missing, but if the person kicked from party was a hateful tank or healer then the party is done because it takes forever to find another one once you're in the instance.

Hello glim3mer and this is a thread we should continue.

Community. That is us, all of us. United we stand, divided we fall. That may sound sort of out of whack with the gaming community, but is it really?

Behavior can be quite terrible indeed, but for every immature 30-something that acts like a teen in hormone rage, there are many of us that try. We give a damn. Most folks care about each other. Sometimes it seems as though there isn't anyone out there with a heart, but there is.

So how do we take back the communities? Forums are one way, but not the only way. In-game controls can help, but may not completely stop the trolling and embarrassing behavior. It takes that majority that stays silent, but seethe inside every time they have to endure a PuG or LFG/LFR. Possibly campaigns for better "gamesmanship" should take rise. I just don't know, but I feel it's time for something to take place.

Obliviously, none of this will happen unless there is a more active and sincere push for change. I just wonder if truly anyone really cares about this issue? I hope so...

Chin up, eyes forward. Fight the good fight...

I never understood this stuff either.  But, I know I suck luckily no one has kicked more for it :P.  Part of the reason I don't tank is because it's a big burden (so is healing but at least I really only have to follow the tank and if f's up it's on him :P).  I think I'll roll a tank next though just because there is always a shortage of them it seems.

I'm going to start vote kicks of rude people though because I am tired of it.  If you want to rush content make a group to rush it. I  would rather take it a little slower and make sure we don't wipe.  Or have me trying to heal the whole damn party because tank doesn't know how to hold aggro and dps don't know how to keep it down.

the easiest way to squeeze some "thrill" out of a game full of faceroll content is to act like an ass. when the entertainment value has all but been bled dry, people will find a way to entertain themselves. no, they wont stop playing because they don't know enough about the real world to be cool on facebook.

LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity.
I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already :)

How do you handle asshats in real life? This isn't a WoW only problem all games deal with this. It's a part of life in reality at home possibly or work or anywhere.

^ A real sociopath in the making. This is how a lot of 20 and unders think, which is why your game time sucked, OP. A thrill and entertainment is ruining someones day.

You need a thick skin these days.

Did you ever stop to consider what conditioned this attitude in the first place... I have been in many dungeons where 1 person is simply surfing and always running to catch up with the group or the dual character player who can only contribute on one.

Anyhos, have you thought about joining a roleplay server? Better attitudes in general.

Ya when someone starts acting like a total jerk i just leave the party without saying a word, one some of these people are psychologically addicted to these games and when you don't act like they want you are messing with them getting their fix. Two, people have trouble empathizing with one another online they have done studies that indicate this, so i am of the opinion that a lot of people act worse online than they do in real life. The last thing the majority of people playing these games are not jerks they are the silent majority, there is a reason that 80% of the people that play ANY game do not post its because the jerks chase them away. Look at how many games are solo friendly......its cause many many gamers are sick of angry internet guy. We have the power to choose who we associate i refuse to let my 'fun' be affected by someone who needs to go back to pre-school and learn how to act right.

Some people just have a bad day hehe.

I really don't curse out people that much (unless you do something after I told you 5 times to not do and you cause us to wipe lol).  I more curse at the game lol (looking at you Celestial Tournament)

It's not merely a game problem. Back when i was 14-15 (end of the 90's) and trolled different chat rooms I was completely childish and unnecessary. Eventually I grew up. If someone acts like that to me in-game these days I just continue to be polite or /ignore them. Just so I don't fall down the aggro-well with them. It ruins the gaming experience.

Back in 2002 when I was playing DAoC two guys was actually gonna meet each other  on the street and brawl it out. It all started wtith a flamewar and got abit carried away.

Then again of course some feelings have to be connected in game and towards your opponents (in PvP) because that will imo enhance the gaming experience to feel the sweet taste of victory and scream out "owned" towards your monitor.

Beeing completely lethargic while playing games would just be plain boring.

    Just airwalking.
